View Full Version : alfred sears reading...
Tafadhali 12-09-05, - 04:53 PM Does he feel that feel that public school students arent good enough for his time?
You know these people need to stop- why was alfred sears reading to private school children and not public school children? yall dont find something so wrong and so late with this picture. And we all know how expensive St. Andrews is- most Bahamians can't afford to send their kids there.
But then this also addresses a bigger issue- most gov't officials children dont even attend the public schools they run and that says to me that the people manning the ship are quite hypocritical because they feel they good enough to run the ship but their kids are too good to be a product of it.
Only after John Rood did it government officials start? :bahamas:
Ive been reading to kids since I was in high school and I dont need a photo- op for acknowledgement of my good will. I will start again.
And for those who will try to spin this- let me plug my hole- the man is in charge of and has a direct control of the government and taxpayer funded public education system- private schools arent in that mix. we need some balnce here.

The government do support private school financially; just thought I would also let you know where public funds go. They are in the mix.

This is in some ways hypocritical. Woow.
But also if you work at Super Value why not shop at City Market if you can get a better deal?
Does he feel that feel that public school students arent good enough for his time?
Boy, I would like an answer to this one Mr. Minister of Education?

They are all out nations children but attention needs to be paid to public schools as they are in a mess. The whole article and pic is in bad taste though.

I agree with your other points and this one is mostly correct also. St. Andrew's however does not receive any government subsidy. Why Min. Sears chose there is perplexing ...
Still, however they got started, it's good to see that the politicians are seeing the value of modelling good behaviour for a change. Hopefully we'll see some of them going around to our public schools soon!

You are correct.
They may not accept the hand out but by law they are entitled.
I agree.... why St. Andrews?

Sears is one of the more intelligent members in government right now. Let's not get snippy. His focus was on reading years before Rood hit the classroom. Remember the Ministry of Education Book Club?
Christie handed Sears a bum deal with the Minister of Education/Attorney General thing, but don't knock the guy - Rood simply happened to get more publicity. Nobody noticed when they came out with the MOE book club years ago, but let the US ambassador read one book to a group of kids and everyone takes notice. Then they choose to berate the Minister as if he never did anything. Bahamians largely ignored the book club idea. Maybe if the US ambassador lent his face to it, Bahamians would finally notice (like some people are doing now)
And it shouldn't matter what school he read to. Give the Minister some credit because he was focusing on reading (Bahamian books at that) LONG TIME ago.
gullyrock 12-10-05, - 07:24 AM Maybe the explanation is as simple as HE WAS INVITED!! He spoke at Forest Heights Academy's graduation last June. That is a private school too...but he was invited! But I also agree that he should visit public schools..no invitation necessary, just his duty!

Namaste:
Sears is one of the most intelligent members in government right now, hmmm i wonder what kind of evidence there is to qualify this statement. If he is then we should disband the government immediately, look at the state of the minstry of education the direction it has been going since the British left the place, and some one says he is intelligent. I wonder what would happen if we put a fool in place may be things would turn around.
do you know that Reading was one of the things i enjoyed in school, i always loved reading those books that were taboo, because of the numerous second string teachers that was in the system at the time and are still there. But word recognition is not reading, reading is the ability to understand the material, reproduce the concepts and expand on it, i do believe that this is saddly lacking in the ministry and the country as a whole. People just cannot read.
Instead of a book club why not a literacy imperative act that involves every one, thats what is needed, every one should learn how to read verses calling words. That would be nice.
May be when the population as a whole can read we will get rid of these clowns called the fnm and the plp, after all a clown is a clown no matter what kind of clothes he or she wears.
As I have written before we need to band the education of our students abroad until we can fill their heads with a national culture, we have to many empty heads going abroad and returning with no skills, just looking for a job. we need to start fining these parents for these missbehaving kids, so that crack pots wont put police in school, we need to have minds to sit down and redesign the government that will work for the people.
Ah but i am digressing, but really reading should be a national priority, because most people cannot, they can recognize words, and have a vage sense of an idea but thats about it.
craigied 12-10-05, - 12:58 PM a1000, your comments resonate with the truth...RE-ENGINEER GOVERNMENT...that's the ticket!

The book club was and is a fantastic idea. Restevec was a good book.

I agree.

now I am offended. it doesnt matter if rood got more publicity he didnt have to do go into Bahamian schools and read to our children- that says alot about this man. My big thing is sears should have went into a public school before a private school like st. andrews because he serves the in the interest of the PUBLIC not PRIVATE sector- st. andrews is one of if not the most expensive private school in this nation- why did he go there why did he not go to the public schools that he have direct control over why now? what has changed all of a sudden? Did you see that picture- those children was not the face of who is at risk and at a disadvantage in the Bahamas sweet boy- this is why we shouldnt cut him or any one of them any slack! they are helping kids who dont really need the extra help. If he got a bum deal with two ministres why did he take both of um- if he couldnt handle it? Does ego have anything to do with it? too little too late and thei is no excuse good enough. yeah better stop throwing yall weight around everything without thinking it through

well let me play devil advocate here: would he have went to centreville primary to read to the poor scratching starve gut children if the principal called and asked to read to them? I am asking on behalf of the faculty and staff on that school (no relation to me by the way) he should be there next week reading to them because he is concerned about them just like he is concerned about the rich kids and st. andrews. if he doesnt go you know the answer why he didnt go. I mean after all it is his duty.:bahamas:
Tafadhali 12-10-05, - 04:31 PM everyone keeps saying how intelligent this man is or that man is but just because your book smart doesnt mean you use your common sense efficiently and effectively. look at fred mitchell too scared to to take a stand of conviction because of the lie of a life he's living everyday.
