View Full Version : An Idea for Cheaper Prices???
garnelleo 12-15-05, - 09:13 AM I went to go buy an X-Box DVD Adapter kit the other day. I went to Diehard Game Club, on Robinson Road, and they have it for $45.00 . Not bad, it goes for 29.99 in US stores, $15.00 - $30 on the net. But this is not my issue.
My issue is with the games.
New games go for $70-$120 in diehard, and anywhere else, when they go for 20-50 in the US or online. Chances are its not their fault, as they cant purchase in large volumes (thus not getting discounts) and deal with high customs duties.
However, I have an idea. Maybe someone said something like this before, but what if one company, imported alot of high selling electronics, like the Xbox/PS2 and their games from the manufacturer or whomever they can get ti from for the best price. Then turn around and sell then to the retailers here.
This way, they can get better discounts, with higher volume purchases and then the savings can get passed on to the retailers.
Just an idea.

I have another idea why dont we build our own, with all these students continually coming back home we must be able to find a few to build games, then we could export it to america.
do for self.

Well, the video game console industry is not that easy to enter. We would need programmers, graphic artists, sound experts, and then to top it all off: licensing to put them on the consoles.
However, if you mean for the PC/internet then yeah. A groups of Comp Sci grads along with graphics ppl, can build flash/java games, put them on a site and charge adverstisers for ads. I am not for charging users for anything on the internet, but advertisers definately. Put in a chat system, and you have a Bahamian version of Pogo or MSN gaming zone.
I personally know of two exceptional young programmers. One graduated COB, is has a big job in a local computer firm , the other went off to Canada to finish his degree.

You can always tell a true Bahamian the minute you tell him or her the way out of a situation they tell you all these reasons it cannot be done.
Look if it was easy then every one would be doing it.
Thats why you have a mind to find a way to solve problems. Think about this are you saying that people in america are more intelligent and creative than you are? If they are not and we are all eqaul why is it that you cannot find a way to build B boxes, call them what ever you want.
This is why we need a change in the education system. We need more than ever the confidence to believe in ourselves.

Dont mind certain people (who aren't even in this country) talking aimlessly about what we as Bahamians should be doing.
Your first idea is a good one. I've heard that a few Bahamian distributors who have strong ties with China have started doing something similar to what you discussed.

Maybe I misunderstood you. If you want to build a console, or establish a game publishing compnay then thats tons of cash, where few make it in the industry. the Xbox is owned by MS, and has billions pumped into it, as well as the Playstation and Gamecube, PSP, GBA etc. This market is more of an oligopoly.
However if you mean those little handled imitation type, game things that parents by kids then possiblly. I dont know the costs in that but it would be easier.
If you mean becoming a game development company, and licensing them to game publishers then you have an easier, albeit still challenging task. This is where Bahamians can maybe get into, as it takes alot less capital.
I was never saying Americans are more intelligent, I am saying that the indusdtry is a hard and daunting one to enter.

lol, posted after u did, and didnt even read this one but yea its a tough one. As branding is a big thing. I was just proposing a cheaper way for local retailers to sell goods.

What i am saying is do some thing, find a way to create instead of complaining, this is the essence of being a bahamain we love to cry about things instead of doing things, i worked in the ministry of health for 5 years doing things verses complaing. If some one said it could not be done we did not have the resources i found a way. This is what real education dose for you, it teaches you to be a resposible handler of power, take any one of your ideas and put it into practice, dont wory about china. Just do some thing.

Well from my first post I never complained about a thing. I said prices of games are high due to customs and low volume importing, then I proposed an idea on how maybe we can lower those costs. That way money goes to those entrprenuers who tryin to make a living, instead of walmart or tiger direct.
Then you may say, why dont we build the games and keep the money here. If we do that who is to say they can compete with the million dollar advertising budgets of US and Japanese games. I'm no naysayer, just a realist.

Believe in your self just do it. let go of this doubt and disbelief free your mind:
"Then you may say, why dont we build the games and keep the money here. If we do that who is to say they can compete with the million dollar advertising budgets of US and Japanese games. I'm no naysayer, just a realist."

Now that's a concept that I can agree with, though a person should always maintain a firm grasp on how their relevant industry works.
In truth, we can compete on the lower tiers of the gaming sector. The marketing campaign would have to be insanely viral in nature though, and would also involve some serious campaigning in the tech blog sector - which would be easy if the result is actually worth looking at.
Wild Tangent (http://www.wildtangent.com) gives their gaming development software out for free and also promotes the best games from amateur developers. It is worth a look.
nulife042000 03-26-06, - 03:37 PM Hey,
I live in Miami and am looking for some sort of buisness opportunity. The bahamas and only a hop skip and a jump from Miami. If your saying that being electronics or computer games or anything else for that matter is much more expensive on your island. I would love to find out the legalities of exporting out of the us straight to someone on the island . Heck , I'll fly down there myself if I have too everyweekend if it's worth our while. Just and idea. If anyone's intersted maybe we can form a partnership that would be in both are interest.

Hey all, this is just something I threw up, but just to show that the talent is here - some of us just don't have the resources yet! (or the time lately...)
