View Full Version : Education Reform Should Include:
Tafadhali 01-15-06, - 03:54 PM A community service project should be a requirement for graduation.I had to do one, and it made me a better person from it. Civic duty- us caring about each other and helping each other will be one of the saving graces for a better Bahamas. It would be good for young kids to know that and do their part in their own way.
k.o.o.l.b.o.n.z.e 01-15-06, - 04:19 PM what type of project? because in order to graduate high school i had to fulfill a certain amount of hours inside and outside of school. don't know if it's standard for all public schools though.

anything. like reading to school children or cleaning up Old Trail, cutting the grass of the elderly, etc. The students can decide what they want to do. Like me, I volunteered at a homeless shelter and was a mentor in a afterschool program at a K-6 school. they didnt set a limit for me I just did 100+ hours because that's what I liked to do. As long as its giving back is what matters.

There are actually many civic organizations in our schools which struggle with lack of membership year after year. When I was in school I was in The Key Club and we had a hard time recruiting members back then, I can't imagine how hard it is now when kids today seem far more distracted and selfish.
man yall had it bad in high school - community service, worrying about that graduation crap, and had to stay in school till you were how old ??
finekameo 01-15-06, - 10:55 PM This is an interesting theory, but I don't see how forcing a high school student to engage in community service will result in any positive outcome. The most probable result would be that students would fulfill the requirement while harboring quite a deal of resentment. Social consciousness cannot be forced upon a person. Instead, it is something that should be nurtured, fostered, and given room to grow.
Instead, why not have the reform come in the form of a requirement for teachers. Something along the lines of making it mandatory for educators to be involved with at least 52 hours of campus sponsored community service activity every 3 years. This means that every teacher would have to get involved in some campus community service every year. I think it would be much more effective in terms of recruiting members for local community service organizations with educators pushing them.
When I was in high school one of my teachers sponsored the local Key Club. She was very good at promoting the organization during class and reminding students to attend meetings. The result was that all students at the meeting wanted to be there and had a positive attitude thus leading to very productive meetings. The last thing we need out there is a community service volunteer with a sour attitude.
Alphaman 01-16-06, - 12:21 AM The BGCSE is the biggest education reform this country has ever had. The idiots who often attack it - for political reasons, are totally ignorant of its philosophy and want to hold on to the eletist imperial system.
Gilbert Morris attacked the grades without researching what they mean. Instead he simply said in his school F meant failure. Idiot.
In the old system, fewer than ten percent of our secondary students were given a chance to sit the irrelevant GCE, set and marked in the mother land. Only half of them passed - that's 5 % of the secondary school population.
All secondary students can take the BGCSE's, and 90% receive a grade A - G,which denotes their level of achievement. They also receive a certificate with these grades. The ministry has grade descriptors which explain what each grade means. The lowest performers recieve a U and no certificate.
The old Colonial exams only tested recall. The BGCSE tests many other skills, like analytical skills, Judgement and Personal Response and Empathy.
The ancient GCE's were based on the final exam only. The BGCSE's are also based on the student's practical work over 2 - 3 years.
The cursed GCE's had NO Bahamian content. The BGCSE's have mainly Bahamian content.
Universities in the US are accepting D grades for matriculation. That says a lot Nikki Kelly and Darrold Miller!
One last mathematical point: what is average between A and G. (D right?)
So the BGCSE is alot like the British GCSE now? Asking cause those came into effect after i left school, we had to take the GCE's and CSE's .. even the grading systems in the UK are different from one to the next though, actually it is different from one school to the next, depending on the schools average grade for the particular year - or at least thats how it was way back when, obviously its probably changed now.

I took the GCEs and I would have taken the GCE A levels as well if i could have found a place that were teaching them. True they were not heavy into the history of the bahamas but they were not one year exams they were comprehensive three years of study. I learnt alot in the GCE tract, i dont know about these other exams as they came long after i left school. But the point that you are missing is grades are not the only yard stick for the measure of education, infact it might be irrelevant.:uh:

I think your being quite single- minded, selfish and callous by responding as you have.i dont feel the same, teachers are overworked and underpaid- that's why im not one one- why should they have to do more work? Students are at a young and impressionable age where if service is embedded in them at a youthful age they will develop a love for community. From my experience I didnt have to do a set amount of hours I just had to come up with an idea and submit my proposal for my graduation checklist. I am a better person from it.
Look at the glass half full.

mnaybe this is why we have so many social problems as it is- we have lost a love for community? we have to remember at the end of the day, they are children not adults...
