View Full Version : Truth And Reconciliation Commission
Tafadhali 01-28-06, - 04:12 PM I didnt even know something like this existed...watching Tavis Smiley ( I love him- seeing that Im home now I have to watch him on the internet (http://www.pbs.org/kcet/tavissmiley/archive/200601/20060126.html) )S. Africa did this post -apartheid to assist their citizens who felt they were victimised. A forum (http://www.doj.gov.za/trc/) for them to be heard. I thought this was a good idea for us as a nation to do. What you guys think? The sad difference is that when we bring these evil doers to their own fellow Bahamians to justice- they will have the same skin colour as me.
de redhead 01-28-06, - 04:52 PM The Bahamas isn't ready for anything like that now. Besides I feel that things like commissions of inquiry after each party is voted out of office was getting old and counterproductive. I realize this would be entirely different but it would serve some of the same purposes. Our history needs to be told properly but I don't see the political will from either major party, I will probably be old as he!! and most of the betrayors of our country will be dead before that will ever happen.

even better reason to do it now...before they die so they can right their wrongs. it will happen in my lifetime I am sure. hopefully sooner than later.
de redhead 01-28-06, - 05:11 PM You more optimistic than me.
In my opinion the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa was one of the most noble actions ever done by mankind. Bishop TuTu, who I had the honor to meet, was very instrumental in that Commission. Any country that follows South Africa's example can't go wrong!!! It was a Commission of healing, not revenge! Revenge leads to more revenge.
The thing is, will it happen here? I doubt it! We have not reached that level yet.

...you people are so pessimistic.
for me it would be catharsis in the sense of financial retribution and people being held accountable and taking responsibility for their misdeeds against their fellow tax paying Bahamian. To me that's justice. We may not be there yet because we have cleaning up to do ...but when we do get there...in the next five years...our own form of TRC will be the order if the day.

Sorry you feel that way. Pessimistic is the last thing I am. I am a realistic optimist! :)
And what is this "financial retribution' thing? Do you really think that will fly? :dgi:

yes it will, for the simple fact that it wasnt yours to beigin with however you profited of it and it was ill gotten. How you ask:follow the paper trail- their always is one if you look hard enough. what i found is that crooked people here in this country- are very messy- everyone knows their business and they dont care- make them pay its not their money anyway. people need to be held accountable- they need to be held responsible and they must pay for their wrong doings. anything else is giving them a pass.

There is an old legal saying, "possession is 9/10's of the law." (I like how you say "yours!") but supposing it was mine, supposing I got what I have by ill-gotten gain, which was not "ill-gotten" at the time. I possess it. Do you want to pull a "Zimbabwe" on me? Look what happened there. They took the land from the White farmers and gave it to the Black "War Veterans." In five minutes Zimbabwe went from the bread-basket of Africa to a beggar nation! Not only that, but the whole civilized world held them in disrepute, because "possession is 9/10's of the law." You cant take something from someone because of a real, or imagined wrong, done 100 or more years ago! That is a road to disaster. There are other means that will work without demanding a hand-out, which will only be lost to the next smart guy that comes along! By the way that is not what Truth and Reconciliation is all about. What you seek is vengeance!

are you afraid of your land being taken from you due in part to your "sewer rat" ancestors?
dont tell me what i think. this is your problem right now your always assuming.
whose said anything about 100 years ago, im talking here and now the corrupt people of govt, the private citizens who pockets have been lined maliciously through their side dealing and swings and conflicts of interest these people must pay and hurt it int heir pockets because that's all they cared about anyway. The Bahamas wouldnt want vengeance as you put it, we need retribution- financial retribution. Peopl cannot get away with their misdeeds, they have to stand up and be held accountable. and for you to even consider or parlay the Bahamian experience with that of the Zimbabwean or South African is insulting to them. The despair or disenfranchisement that a balck Bahamian or any Bahamian endured dont even come close to theirs. shame on you.
RockWell 01-29-06, - 04:16 PM Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

First of all I am first generation Bahamian. My ancestors were far from "sewer rats!" How would you feel if I called you ancestors - massive under achievers?

I only assume by what you posted.

OK. now I understand! But it still will not happen!

Financial retribution? Financial vengeance? What is the difference?
Peopl cannot get away with their misdeeds,
They do all the time!
they have to stand up and be held accountable.
That would be nice, but it will never happen.

Possible true. But to hear you sometimes one would doubt it.
shame on you.
Not for the first, or the last time! :bouncy:

That's my big thenig why wont it? Everytime someone gives a suggestions to a step forward its met with dismay or ever excuse in the book as to why it cant be is used. boy I tell ya poverty of the mind and spirit. just negativity. shameful.

We had commission before, remember the FMN thing? They showed the corruption of the PLP but no one was brought to justice!
PS. "first generation Bahamian explains it all now" Explains what!
PPS. If your ancestors came from Scotland maybe there were not under achievers after all - mine came from there too! We have something in common! At least on the Scottish side!

my "one" ancestor is of scottish heritage.
Before anyone can be held accountable I think we have to turn a new leaf as a people. we have to be tired of the bad rep the Bahamas is getting. We have to get tired of the inequality and the tiefing and the hypocrites and...then and only then. This "new PLP" is up to its old ways and it is helping us see how backward a few rogue Bahamians can keep us to their benefit and their gain- that why financial retribution has to be somethng we as a nation of people look for in our own form of South Africa's TRC.
So again explain to me why this cant happen?
