View Full Version : Alleged abuse of prisoners
michali 02-04-06, - 04:06 PM Have you seen the photos in today's Tribune, allegedly of the two prisoners who escaped and, on recapture, were treated at the hospital. The photos are pretty horrific and one wonders who took them? I can see Amnesty International coming down on The Bahamas like white on rice. I am wondering too if the public's response will be quite mild, as their memory of the prison guard being brutally murdered by the escapees is still fresh in their mind. We all spent a nervous two weeks before Corey Hepburn was recaptured so I suspect that sympathy for these prisoners, if they do indeed turn out to be those recaptured after their prison break, will not be too strong.
What do you all think?

yes they were beat senseless I knew this was coming...sadly all the beating inthe world will not bring back the life of the slain officer.I wasnt scared of Mr. Hepburn "coming to get me" he was more scared of me recognizing him and was more concerned about getting as far away from here as possible, why else would he have been out in coral harbour. If anything I feel sorrow from Mr. Hepburn his young life was stolen away from him because of bad choices...and the sad thing is there are so many young men out there who wont have a chance because of how our govt feel about them and how society looks down upon wayward youth when all they are crying out for is love and guidance and support ...imagined if our social system invested in the Corey Hepburn's of the Bahamas this would be a non issue now. He could have been my lil brother railroaded in crimanl justice system.
What do I think you ask. I say look to the prison system...those prisoners didnt plan the escape on their own, they had inside help (why else what officer bowles be murdered...did he know something?) and I still believe that the criminologist- Dr. Rahming's- head should roll, Mother Pratt should be reassigned to another portfolio that is more intune with here expertise (teaching and bible beating) and we as a nation of people need to look at our correctional system or lack there of- and we need to implement major changes and rehabilitate, not beat to a pulp or deprive our own fellow imprisoned Bahamians of being treated with decency and respect. If anything the powers that be should really look into this because many of them (and others) will be in the same situation after the TRC is finished with them...oh yes it is coming!
do unto others as...
k.o.o.l.b.o.n.z.e 02-04-06, - 04:29 PM aw man, i want to see this. can someone upload the images for me or is that a violation of copy rights or something?
michali 02-04-06, - 05:58 PM Probably should not upload but not pretty pictures. i agree....we are creating some very angry young men and if we do not look into why that is happening, we are in for lots of trouble ahead. We need to stop beating our children for a start.
id like to see them .. once you say their from the tribune it's okay .. if they have a problem all they can do is ask to have them removed.

If the photos that I saw this morning in the Tribune are bahamians or anyboby else that was actually abuse by the prison guards, it is a despicable and rather an embarassing situation.
It is a situation in which every bahamian should be a shame. The abuse of prisoners cannot, and I repeat cannot be condone under any circumstances.
Those culprits that are responsible should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
It is no wonder that the jail inmates will risk death to escape. There ought to be a full investigation into this alledged abuse. And hopefully a report to the bahamian people fortwith!
michali 02-04-06, - 07:14 PM One of the photos was just on the ZNS news and, unbelievably, the huge concern is who took the photo and how!! I agree this is an issue...but are they not missing the point? Surely they should be more concerned as to whether those prisoners were indeed left in the condition shown in the photo...naked, beaten and bleeding.
bahamiangoddess 02-04-06, - 08:37 PM I saw the photos on Z.N.S tonight and I was outraged. I could care less how they got out, as a matter of fact, I applaud the person who took them. It appeared as if that person had some compassion in their heart for their fellow human being. I could also only imagine what condition Corey Hepburn is in. It all goes back to what Amnesty International was saying all along. Fox Hill prison is a breeding ground for criminals, as much as Mr. Rahming knows about criminology, I am sure that he knows that what happened in Fox Hill is not a part of the rehabilitative process. And don't tell me he did not know, he is the MAN IN CHARGE!! God forbid all the inmates wake up one morning and say enough is enough! Yes, they are prisoners, but they are still human beings, I am sure being locked up in that hell hole, is more punishment they we can begin to imagine. No wonder when they are released, the majority of them are mad with the world. I will wait to see what the Govt intends to do next.
That situation has really upset me, I could only imagine what else goes on in there!!!!!
WinterGrace 02-04-06, - 08:58 PM I haven't seen the picures and I would like to see them. Could you imagine? Those police is beat down innocent people they just bring in for "questioning", so you could imagine the beating those recaptured prisoners got.
watsayu 02-05-06, - 02:46 AM I have seen the photos and I am out radged. How can we as citizens stnd by and see fellow Bahamians treated in such manner. FORGET politics, that is some one's brother, sister, friend, father, whatever.
The internatinal press gets their hands on them we will be know to be worst then Abu Ghraib. We will cetainly need a commission, why were these men shackled, naked, seemly in a coma while behind bars.
They are still humans.
I am out so upset. WHO DID THIS ? WHY ? Did the Minister of National Security saw them ? Did the Minister od Foreign Affairs saw them ? Did the Attorney General and Minister of Education saw them ? Did the PS from National Security saw them ? and I am not talking about the photos, I am talking about the abused prisioners.

Dude, its nothing new .... where yah been??
its common practice to abuse prisoners in the Bahamas .. its well known, just some Bahamians are living in denial, and that doesn't mean they livin at dat river in Egypt .. even in central station lockup there are no toilets and yah go hours without access to one ... peing on da same floor yah sleep on is da way to go .. i heard a little kid get the crap beaten out of him at CID headquarters some years ago, they dragged him out of the room bloodied right up, he was like 11 or 12 years old .. they were 7' tall ... I thought just maybe things had changed as that was some 15 years ago ..

where is loving godly Mother Pratt saying or doing about this- she knows about love and respect for her fellow Christians or does she also want to seek vengeance and turn that bible beating into something worse that whippings- post emancipation?
where is human rights activist Fred Mitchell- did he forget hesef...he should know the way homophobia is going in this country many of his people are headed for the same vicious beatings?
Speak up Mr. Sears- if this happened in NY's correctioanl facilities he knows what would have happened..what happened to his worldly views...not a word...what has changed since he came home?
And the crimnologist dr. rahming what does he have to say besides giving us his resignation so he can walk away with some dignity before we have his head roll?
our mute PM what is he saying, they better speak up or else the bahamian version of TRC will really not be kind to them?
What are Bahamians sayings...besides us on this board?
This is just a symptom of a bigger problem...law enforcement doesnt respect the average Bahamian onthe street...especially those locked up...when will we stop lying to ourselves is all I Have to say?

Roy, senior member, I hear you and I accept what you are saying. But the issue is now before us, the facts are laid before us for all to see or to at least voice thier concern.
Since the beginning of time, such has been the case, but now we must stand up, be counted and speak up for the rights of all. NOTICE, this is a serious moral issue and all god men and woman must not allow this to go unchallanged.
de redhead 02-05-06, - 05:51 PM People have been beaten by the police for years, now that someone publishes some pictures this becomes an issue.
I and a friend were once beaten by police for nothing, not for participating in the killing of a prison officer. I don't remember who was Minister of National Security then but that person didn't see us either. The judge saw my friend in court with his eye still sqwollen shut 3 months later and dismissed the issue when we raised it. This foolishness been happening for years and everybody has always known it, now you all are outraged. Please. I heard that the other inmates who were in position to escape at the time that these inmates did decided to voluntarily return to their cells after they realized that a guard had been killed. If those who did escape had done the same they would not be getting beaten now. I asked a few co-workers yesterday if he thought 2 weeks of freedom was worth the beating that we knew Hepburn was gonna get and none of them thought it was especially when that freedom was probably worse than being behind bars.
These guys made a conscious decision and now they are paying the consequence, I don't feel sorry for them, they probably deserve worse than they are getting.

how cold and callous of you...because it happened to you and noone listened its okay for this to happen to them and for people to get away with it? Did you and your friend go to internal affairs at the RBPF? At least you all have a record in the court system...for the longest these people had nothing now the proof is in the pictures( pun intended) even with Amnesty screaming inhumane conditions at the facilities.
This is more than about some prisoners making a conscious decision to escape...its about humanity...no matter what they did that doesnt make it right for them to be beaten and abused like that. We as a nation of people have to do better.
