what is sustainable development? is it possible?

in terms of tourism?...

yes it is very possible look at those small island nations in the pacific or the countries in the Amazon region they seem to get it and they seem to be doing it well. If they had the location like us...

big is not better...we have a fragile ecosystem...our flora and fauna concerns should trump big development...imagine Atlantis 40 years from now...you cant...we need small scale not eyesores down the road.

but PC doesnt seem to understand that, thank God we getting rid of the flop.
we need our Bahamian population to understand and educated about the importance of our environment. Every Bahamian should be a tree hugger and environmental activist...this is all we have.

I agree that we should all be tree huggers to an extent. I think that this entire world is headed toward a disaster in the near future (more than it is now). The US refusing to sign a treaty reducing emissions recently was a huge setback (yet George Bush in his state of the union address claims they should embrace more alternative sources of energy, I don't believe him but I hope he is being genuine).

I made a recommendation on Darold Miller's show a few weeks or months back and was disappointed by his response. I suggested that government should consider a reduced custome duty rate for hybrid vehicles, he just brushed me off. I was kind of upset but whatever, maybe he didn't think to have cue cards made up about hybrid vehicles that morning.

PS. I know this wasn't really about sustainable development but I think it is important.

darrold probably didnt understand that's why he reacted that way...the ignorant always do when they dont understand concepts...he should have just asked you for clarity or more information.

yes I agree with you...hybrid vehicles not these big cars that our tiny roads dont have the space for...man our country has so much potential when it comes to being environmentally friendly and functioning efficiently and our govt just sh!t on every plan that they dont understand or cant profit off unscrupulously with these backhanded deals (caveat:but not to worry the TRC is coming).

I envision a Bahamas where we have smaller vehicles (something like China Japan Italy and the UK) and a connectedness with the sea and island living again...do we even go fishing and sailing anymore? (Regatta doesnt count) I may not know how to sow a straw basket but I know how to "start" and Im proud I know how to do that. Cleaning fish, cleaning you teeth with sand ...I could go on and on.These are national pastimes that add to our uniquesness as a culture. My aunty was telling me a story about how her daddy use to always tell her if you could choose between a businessman and a fisherman choose the fisherman because if the businessman looses his job he cant feed his family. (I was wise enough to get me a businessman who "fished" before he put on a suit- even if it was fresh water fish-mullets and catfish, God bless his country arse, but i digress) It has a great deal to do with the misconception that a degree trumps all and your inferior if you dont have one...which should not be the case at all we are island people...we should know how to do these things...they served a purpose back then and they still do now- survival.

In this day and age we should know by now, especiallly with all this big development. What does it do for our coastline? Our water- We want it brown and murky like Florida?I wont even begin to talk about the reefs and the chemicals from dumping and golf courses. All these baby conchs on the market now- that is wrong.Man if you think about the overfishing all that is so relevant b/c when things get bad we cant even feed ourselves because no stock is in the water and the necessary govt entities didnt take sustainability seriously. They should watch out for the new England fisherman that come down when their "season" is over who poach- this is true I even heard the lady who wrote a book about Lobstering admit to it on Tv and Cubans are still great fisherman-even the ones in Miami- our waters are heavily unmanned and people take advantage of our weakness and Nassaucentric view of the Bahamas.

I cant stress enough bigger is not better. Being environmentally aware is so important for us because the cost of living is so high here we need to find more efficient ways of doing things so that we as a nation of people can "sustain" ourselves.

That's one of the reasons why im going back to school and why i have to leave...because we dont have the neccessary bodies that can facilatate the kind of training that I need. The environment is such a great cause to attach one self too...

sorry for the rant.

well we need to get rid of all these wussy little vehicles to start with, especially the japanese diesel ones that are killing us slowly .. may as well just have every citizen smoke ciggerettes, diesel smoke will kill you just as quick ...

cut down the amount of vehicles per household ..

take vehicles away from people that drive them without a licence or insurance ..

retest everyone on the island, take licences and vehicles away from people that cant drive, or cant park, that will get rid of a lot of traffic!

We need powerful vehicles and large jeeps on these roads, when they ever actually fix the roads, then we can look at it in a different view, like maybe then we will have "roads", right now alls we got is track roads with potholes.

Enforce a drinking and driving law ..

Enforce the running red light law ... after 12am every moron and their sissy mother runs the red light.

Enforce the signal law, and brake lights, if they dont have 'em or dont use 'em, take the idiots licence.

Enforce the law of motor bikes riding down the center of traffic, includes police bikes, they arent above the law .. lock 'em all up!!

Adjust the current speed limits to that for motorised vehicles, currently they are fixed on horse and carriages!

until then, Road Traffic Dept in the Bahamas will remain one big darn joke ..

:hammer:

I think we also need to put some foucs on our despicable agricultural sector. I mean why import when you can grow in ya own back yard. All these hotels are nice and dandy, but lets partially wean ourselves off of tourism for goodness sake.

Better buy your land now..........backyards may be scarce in the future.
