View Full Version : Should kewyol or spanish be taught in Bahamian Schools? danny 02-21-06, - 03:01 PM What do you guys think? My family and I had a big debate on this topic just the other day. nationbuilder 02-21-06, - 03:21 PM Ill try hard to stick to your question and not get into the MANY things that need to happen in our schools! lol. I think that Bahamians will do well knowing as many foreign languages as they can learn. Bahamians, unless they get some exposure, tend to see matters like learning kewyol in such a narrowminded light. Language is the way one soul communicates with another. So the more ways you are able to do that, the better off we all can be I think. You know how some people say if you teach kewyol for instance it will somehow threaten us as a nation? lol. I dont know how you feel about the matter, but for me I say go ahead Bahamians, learn all you can for as long as you can. Tafadhali 02-21-06, - 03:52 PM Your family wasted your precious time...this is a no-brainer...I already made light of Aruba's youth learning 3 or 4 languages in its school system and anyone living in Brussels (capitol of the EU and the nefarious WTO) has to know at least four languages in order to get a job... But we us before we go profecting some other tongue of some other land we need to make sure we speak PROPER ENGLISH and master the english language!!!! any EU language with all this globalization and the US's deficit spending on its war on terrorism we have to look at the other side of the world mandarin (the growth of China is phenominal), Spanish (definately Latin America is a force that will not be denied), French, japanese, german,Italian... they can learn kreyol on their own time, its not spoken in boardrooms, and it will only enable the illegal immigration situation, for what. Rory 02-21-06, - 05:46 PM What languages are they given the choice to learn now? I had the choice of French, German, and Spanish when i went to school (chose french only) Alien 02-21-06, - 05:48 PM Thats going to be hard... The advantage that Aruba and the Antilles have is that they are not an English colonized country. They are dutch and french...juxtapose to english speaking countries.. English is the dominant language of the Western world... If you dont speak it..you are lost! Aside from Rudimentary spanish...you do not need to learn french and spanish to survive if you allready speak english. We are in the dominant majority...plus we have an arrogance to the extent to ask that why the heck should we learn any other language?? :dgi: SPEAK ENGLISH!!! canewry 02-21-06, - 10:44 PM With 30k plus people living in the Bahamas speaking creole; which language do you think should be the Bahamas 2nd language. Nevertheless, check the Bahamas' information sheet on the net done by the US...It says that the languages spoken in the Bahamas are English and Creole. xlittlexmissxcourtneyx 03-03-06, - 07:06 PM Actually, I do believe Spanish and Creole should be taught in schools. With all the Bahamians going to Miami, to shop and stuff ; it would become very helpful, don't you think? And with all the Haitians coming to the Bahamas, Creole would also be helpful. biggy 03-03-06, - 07:13 PM Actually, I do believe Spanish and Creole should be taught in schools. With all the Bahamians going to Miami, to shop and stuff ; it would become very helpful, don't you think? And with all the Haitians coming to the Bahamas, Creole would also be helpful. Helpful? Of course and learning any second language is a plus but in this case,it would be very irritating for many,to learn creole, given present circumstances. k.o.o.l.b.o.n.z.e 03-03-06, - 07:14 PM i always tell my friends i'm going to learn creole just for the fact that i don't like having people talking around me and not have any idea of what's going on. I'm going after french to up my number of languages to 3. xlittlexmissxcourtneyx 03-03-06, - 07:15 PM Yeah. Isn't french and creole somewhat alike? I am also learning 3 languages. At the moment, Im studyin spanish and german. islandgyal 03-03-06, - 07:23 PM :hammer: given the globalization underway, parents should be encouraging their children to learn as many languages as possible. here in the bahamas, we overhear so many different languages from our visitors. my parents certainly did, and spanish was mandatory for me in nassau, which i then studied for four years. i took german for five years into college, and overlapped studying french for two. creole makes sense to me as another language to study, although i can fudge communication with my local haitian friends here using my french. so far, anyway, unless they're just being polite :footmouth . another language? it can only come in handy! xlittlexmissxcourtneyx 03-03-06, - 07:40 PM I agree. Peaches* 03-03-06, - 07:51 PM Actually, I do believe Spanish and Creole should be taught in schools. With all the Bahamians going to Miami, to shop and stuff ; it would become very helpful, don't you think? And with all the Haitians coming to the Bahamas, Creole would also be helpful. Keep the Bahamas Bahamian. Need I say more. xlittlexmissxcourtneyx 03-03-06, - 07:54 PM In a way, I agree. But, there are a lot of tourists in the Bahamas. What is some tourists come and don't know any English? Bahamians are the only ones allowed to do tourism jobs, am I correct? Therefore, if they don't know any other language, what are the tourists to do? Are you going to stop them from coming into the Bahamas? garnelleo 03-04-06, - 07:58 PM Keep the Bahamas Bahamian. Need I say more. Uhh.. yea u need to say more considering that they teach spanish and french in schools now. Dont know how teaching any foriegn language is making the country any less Bahamian. |
