Other than the following do you guys know of any other scholarship offerings?

- Lyford Cay Foundation
- Bahamas Oil Refining Company
- Bahamas Supermarkets Foundation (City Markets)
- Tomlinson Foundation
- Burns House Ltd. (Sir Lynden & Archdeacon Thompson Funds’)

Also, I have a question that I pose to the forum on the private sector and scholarships.

Do you think it’s a good idea that most of these scholarship programs frown on students wishing to pursue studies in the Public Service? I mean if you tell them you want to work in the public service or study for a degree as suck your application is more often than not thrown in the rejection pile.

Gerace Field Station
Lyford Cay Foundation (Technical)
Estelle Siebens Excellence Award
All Bahamas Merit Scholarship
Port Authority Scholarship
United World College
OAS (Organization of Amer. States)
Rotary Foundation

then there are ones that come with Technical Cadets, JA, Gentelemens Club etc. Then others that I am too lazy to type.

I am trying for some, mainly the ones Excalibur mentioned. The worst I can get is no. :) Thats why I was asking about dependants (http://www.bahamasissues.com/showthread.php?t=3156).

However, I never knew they frowned on persons wanting to work in the public service. The only thing occupational/degree wise I thought they frowned upon would be the ones they dont consider "nation building" degrees or whatever.

For example Borco wants persons who pursue Marine Science/Pilotage, Chem, Elec, Mech Engineering, Chem, Physics, Bio, Comp Sci, Accounting, Finance, Management, Agriculture and Fisheries.

What really bites is when you dont have citizenship (but thats another story).

Also, when they ask your religious affiliation and mother and fathers place of birth. Just 3 more ways to discriminate you.

I must disagree with this practice.

I know allot of students who may get this scholarship but cant afford to come up with the other half in most cases to ever use it.

Me too. Also why do they want a photo of you?

The most Bahamas Supermarkets give you is $2,500 which is great and better than nothing and you have to do 3 times as much for them in the application process compared to ones that give you three times as much money. For instance the 500 word essay and the high school transcript whether you have been out of high school for years and even if you have completed years of college, right!

When I called them they asked me questions like where my mother and father was from, income (even though I was on my own) where I went to school - high school. Etc. Stuff like that.

Sorry for deviating a bit from the topic, but it has come to my attention, from a reliable source, that 25 scholarships are presently available to Bahamians who want to study in Mexico. This is supposedly a new agreement signed between The Bahamas government and Mexico. At present, I'm not in the country, so I don't know if it was publicised or not.

If this is true, get the word out because I find that many persons lose out on scholarship opportunities because they don't know about them. I don't know through which government ministry it is offered, but I'd imagine it'd be either the Min of Foreign Affairs or Min of Education.
