On a serious note though, I think one of things health officials in New Providence said that disturbed me was that an alarming number of teenage girls have been coming in HIV positive having contracted it through anal sex with older (mostly married and apparently "on the down low") men.

Its a shame that in this culture we hide so much and are not willing to admit that things are going on. The men sleeping with these underaged girls are breaking the law. Parents know that this is the case, but will they press charges? No. Its like the dirty little secret of incest - though there is nothing little at all about incest and how much it happens in our relatively small country.

We might be shocked to know how many children have been and are the victims of sexual abuse in this country..and we wonder why young people today are so angry.

I know you're right on this.In the States they are referred to as stump- jumpers among inmates and they don't do well in jail.Messing with kids is serious business that needs to be dealt with harshly.

Good point. This has been going on for decades, only diffence now is the deadly HIV/AIDS virus and other STD's. Unfortunately, this has been socially accepted, and is deeply rooted in our Bahamian culture, just as drinking and gambling!

gia what the heze you talkin bout willis???
this crap is NOT socially acceptable thats why it is on the DOWN LOW. Drinkin and GAmblin are worldly phenoms, and deeply rooted in practically every culture which i believe hardly compare to the topic at hand.

sweethearting, incest all done on the down low. Let me know when some MF introduces his wife to his sweetheart in church, I'll retract my post son right away then I will log off the computer and cry. I would like to be niave and believe that some sense of moral fiber is left.

you know I thought about doing a thread on the "The epidemiology of AIDS in the Bahamas" and how to curb it...this is very scary....young girls are very naive and they are nothing but prey to older men b/c they probably want that daddy love an affection (and the twenty dollars too)...I hate to vilify the bisexual or down low brother are whoever...their behavior has been around from biblical times...its not just them and its very irreponsible for us to just place the onus on married DL men...its a bigger problem and only serves to blame the victim and then beat him...a double wammy...do you think DL (http://blackcommentator.com/149/149_cover_lowdown_downlow.html) behaviour is the reason why Africa is ravished or is it lack of education and awareness? (the link provides th e AA perspective but just change AA with Bahamian and change our stats around and it shouldnt be that much off)

but I wish the MOH would be on the streetcorners panhandleing condoms and AIDS literature in the pockets of poverty all over the Bahamas as those are the places where folks are most affected...the man made AIDS is going nowhere for a minute (because AZT is making money for those pharmaceutical firms) so we need to deal with this before our population rate is looking something scary like life expectancy being 39 years as is the case of Botswana (http://www.pbs.org/kcet/tavissmiley/special/roadtohealth/guests/ernest_darkoh.html) FYI (http://www.pbs.org/kcet/tavissmiley/archive/200510/20051031.html#) we must be vigilant.

but these are some others areas that deserve special attention
1. sweethearting
2. construction workers and civl servants (police officers) working and migrating all over the Bahamas...it would be interesting to compare the AIDS rate of Harbour Island in 2000 and in 2006 and we should be shocked!
3.Kids (unknowingly) born with it being sexual active
4. tourist and "visitors in our presence"
5. the bisexual man

it has already happened and the sweetheart is probably big in the church while were at it...and i knwo that's a NY thing but why you calling me "son"
when you say the down low it signifies act of men usually black men living incognito homosexual lifestyles...lets not continue to perpetuate myths and mix metaphors...they only serve to confuse the issue...ONE ;)

Let me add this to the conversation. A country and a society that is openly hostile to homosexuality will not get rid of it. It will simply force homosexuality under ground, to where people must hide it. Pretend they are something they are not. To keep a steady girlfriend to maintain the illusion that they are not gay. If you are gay you are....there is no "lifestyle" choice in that. But if you live in a society that openly finds you contemptable.....you will hide it. You will sneak around. You will enage in unsafe sexual practices. By unsafe i dont mean by simply not wearing a condom....which everyone should do (even tho there are many ways to have sex and many ways to pass the virus)......but by forcing your "lifestyle" into the shadows, into the places where secrets are easier to keep....into the danger zone....that society has made it taboo for you to more easily commit yourself to a committed relationship, to more easily be who you are. That society cringes at the thought of allowing you to marry the one person you may really love. That society prefers you keep your deviant practices in dark. Your stuck with random encounters with strangers you dont know.....unsafe no matter the sexuality. And in the dark is where trouble brews.

This is not an excuse for those that choose to do so. This is by no means an attempt to justify the deciet that such an existence must create. It is a reality. There are wrongs on both sides of this......but people should at least be aware of the consequences of all the choices we decide...as individuals and and as a society.

(Caveat: This is not all gay people. This is not all HIV as all HIV is not gay people. So please dont assume that it is. I just add this to the conversation for people to consider and discuss).
