View Full Version : COB Presidential Controversy Part II
Just when you thought it were gettin quiet, Franlyn Wilson and COBs council throws us another curve ball.
For those who dont know the story, I have been talkin to lecturers, officers and students, watching the news etc. and here is what I can conclude.
As we all know Dr. Smith (former COB president) resigned (either forced or voluntary) and there was a new search for a president. Following, there was only 2 applicants. Dr. Rhonda Chipman Johnson (former VP? and current Acting President) and Dr. Pandora Johnson (VP Research, Planning and Development).
They went through the rounds of interviews and a decision havent been made nor any annoucments were made (something that some took issue with).
Seems like Mr. Wilson and the council wasnt satisfied with the cantidates and wanted someone with former university presidential experience, along with fundraising experience. So they go out and recruit a Canadian female who I heard lived/taught in the Bahamas before (dont know her name or history).
So the council had a big meeting today in the College's auditorium where they , I guessed discussed this with the faculty. The faculy ended up walking out of the meeting in 'protest' (allegedly). I think their issue is with the process of adding her to the list of potential cantidates.
I dont know what all they have issue with but I think one is that she is not a Bahamian.
Thoughts.?

What in the hell is with this Canadian/Bahamian relationship??
I see more Canadian expats and such working and getting top jobs in the BAH.
Is this the after effects of Bahamians going to school in Canada, and recruitng their friends, or friends friends??
:D

Maybe they are dual citizenship?

Well one of the big issues for the faculty too is that the Canadian candidate does not have a PhD. Um a College president WITHOUT a PhD???:realmad:

Yeah that is messed up..........arent they supposed to give bahamians priority?
ahh. Didnt want to post that as i thought it was just something made up.
So its true that she only has a masters? I thought one of the criteria was a Ph.D
Also, yea I thought that Bahamians were supposed to be given preference. I also thought (thought now) that they were only interviewing Bahamians. Guess I am wrong.

...this time Wilson has gone to far...if this is the case....a college president without a PhD is like a teacher without a degree in most circles...their playing with COB's credibility and this is not good...this is a problem we cant have someone helming the premiere tertiary institution in The Bahamas and didnt even go "all the way"...I hope they know what the hell their doing...that's for sure...but it sends a wrong message to hire this Canadian woman as if Bahamians arent good enough...both Bahamian woman have experience but im not sure if they are what the college needs at this time- it needs new blood, fresh vision, a plan and a course of action...they cant find no other Bahamian with experience anywhere else...if only Alfred Sears wasnt ABD...
Whoever they get COB needs work...fundraising is an understatement...they need to get rid of from their barriers of entry, and recruit more males...there is hope...

really it shouldnt be about that, it should be about who can take the institution where it needs to go...but with this woman being a friend of Wilson...that scares me...

There are Teahcing Assistants that marks papers that have Masters Degrees at my University.:uh: But obviosuly in the Bahamas that qualifies you as a College and soon to be University President, my lawd!. I have no quams about them hiring a non-Bahamian. If we dont have anyone qualified to fill the position, then we will have to seek someone from outside of the country simple. However they should at least have experience in a similar position and have a PhD for goodness sake. That is settign a high standard for an institution that seeks University status in the near future.
boy oh boy, dey starting to sound like dat half cuban insitute, what dat name again ..?

Canadians have a rich history of teaching at Caribbean institutions. Teaching in a place like the Bahamas where the weather is prime and the economy is good is a huge attractant. Most Americans can remain in the US and get payed top dollar at US institutions, in fact alot of Canadian educators go there as well to work at Universities and Colleges, because they wont receive top notch salaries in Canada without at least 30 years of tenure. So that pretty much trumps your argument, becasue dollar signs are rarely loyal to any nation.

From the Bahama Journal...
Preceded by the storming out of about half the faculty of the College of The Bahamas, Canadian academic Janyne Hodder said Monday that she had not been offered the position of president of COB.
"I should make it clear that I have not received any offer from the college nor have I made any commitment beyond this (visit to explore the possibility of whether she would accept the position if it were offered)," Ms. Hodder, a permanent resident of The Bahamas, told a meeting with members of the faculty.
Council Chairman Franklyn Wilson, who confirmed that Ms. Hodder had not been offered the presidency, revealed at a press conference after the meeting that two issues had been raised as to Ms. Hodder’s possible unsuitability for the post.
"The issue of race is an issue for some," Mr. Wilson said. "Ms. Hodder is a Canadian, and she is Caucasian."
Mr. Wilson said the fact that Ms. Hodder does not have a doctorate is also an issue for some, but pointed out that the council was satisfied as to the circumstances surrounding her choice not to complete a doctorate.
Ms. Hodder told the faculty meeting that she chose to care for her children rather than complete her doctoral studies.
Just wanted to copy this so that yalls could see that Ms. Hodder does not have a PhD. I mean, I certainly am not knocking any woman who chooses motherhood over career or whatever...but um, I am knocking Wilson those considering someone to lead a College that wants to attain university status, who doesnt have the qualifications required. I would think that her not having a PhD alone would stand in the way of COB attaining this goal..among a myriad of other things.
Well right now Wilson acts like the College is his, (e.g. feeling he dont need to release the report which preceeded Mr. Smith's departure even though taxpayers paid for it and it includes recommendations on the future of COB). So who knows why Ms. Hodder was being considered.:screw:
