View Full Version : With Regardz 2 Respect and The Wider West Indian Community...
Tafadhali 03-21-06, - 03:48 PM Actually, the Bahamas only contributes 2 percent of CARICOM's budget annually. "Poor" states like Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago foot the majority of CARICOM's bill. So this "they need the Bahamas to survive" thing is a myth dollars and cents wise.
$10 mill to the CCJ could be used for far "better" things in our own damn country dont you agree?
Tafadhali 03-21-06, - 03:50 PM thank you very much...
also... some ppl have made commentz about them being jealous and hating on us, economicz blah blah blah... this person was mostly concerned about individual bahamianz not knowing their own history... and quite honestly it's something that concernz me as well... how many school children can tell you the story of the person their school is named after?? or why certain roadz have their namez and the storiez there?? how many can give you a good discussion about slavery in the bahamas and other thingz of the like?
i certainly don't agree with this woman that the bahamas has no culture and no history... but i understand where she was coming from...
and by the way taf... i surely did dig into her, and by the end of it all, she wondered why it is that bahamianz never showed that part of themselvez and had that chameleon quality of character...
please sir its Bahamas and Bahamians..give us some respect!
Teniel 03-21-06, - 05:05 PM Listen, are we that 'hard up' for recognition from other Caribbean nations? Why are some Bahamians constantly whining and pining for attention from the rest of the Caribbean? 'Some o' yinna stop ackin like dat.' Will their acceptance of us change the price of bread or oil for that matter? Let it go and move on people. My worth as a Bahamian and as a Caribbean woman does not rely on acceptance from other Caribbean nationals. Neither do I need my culture to be villified by anyone else in the region, because I am that secure in myself and in my cultural identity. I refuse to get caught up in this crabs in a barrel syndrome, because that is what it boils down to.
For anyone that truly wants to know about the Bahamas and its history and culture, Google is their friend. Other than that they can continue to wallow in their cesspool of ignorance.
Teniel 03-21-06, - 05:15 PM I once asked, on separate occasions, two Dominican friends of mine, why is it that West Indians don't like Bahamians?
You know Bahamians are technically West Indians as well. In fact the term would be more correct than Caribbean. But I will stick with the latter in regards to myself.
Not all Caribbean nationals think less of Bahamians and it's mostly the people from larger countries like Jamaica who are jealous of us and thus seek to marginalise us through pettiness and ignorance.
Browse through some Caribbean forums when you get a chance. The amount of petty and trifling banter on some of those forums is ridiculous. Instead of discussing the things that unite the region, most people choose to focus on the petty differences. And yes the rivalries are more so between the larger islands namely Jamaica amd Trindidad. Many nationals from those two countries have overly inflated views of their country and culture, to the point that some of them tend to belittle other countries in the region.
Misery loves company. Well in that case I ga stay ta masef.

Um actually what I would agree to is that being a part of a regional block is not a waste of time, money or waste of iniative.
The Ingraham administration gave the money you quoted as the Bahamas' contribution to the formation of the CCJ because it realised that the Bahamas would eventually use the CCJ as its final court of appeal, since its widely agreed upon that the Privy Council will cease to be maybe sooner rather than later for us.
Even the PM and Fred agreed with this move (atleast at different times in different public addresses).
The Bahamas is funny boy..we dont produce hardly squat, depend almost exclusively on imports for our survival, but feels like we dont need anyone.
Im not saying you are saying this, this is a spinoff observation in general. We dont need CARICOM some say, To hell with the U.S. others say...lord we jokey.
you mean the appalachian mountains in the Kentucky region correct?
I have never been there so....incorrect I guess.

you guess...you guess...so who were you talking about then.. what preconceived notion you had then...you guess:what: :taped: it certainly couldnt have been my African American brothers and sister in the "poorly educated sections" of America's interior...surely you couldnt have guessed... because those country bumpkins sound horrible with their "poor sloopy english"

Personally,I feel most everyone South of the Mason Dixon line and north of Fort Pierce Fl. speak poorly.I have no idea where all that yo,yall, bubba stuff came from but it sounds dumb to me.

Tafadhali are you really this ignorant? I wonder how much you have travelled. My point is that people within the USA who are poorly educated say some of the exact same things that you consider dialect like tree for 3 and mines for this is mine etc. You call that something you wanna be proud about? Perhaps we should be proud about the nuances of the language and different words rather than the sloppy ghetto english aspects.
Growing 03-23-06, - 04:09 PM she didnt know herself so how could you understand where she was coming from..who is she to you anyway!
random person i met with the same attitude i keep finding towardz bahamianz....
Growing 03-23-06, - 04:11 PM Just a question. How do you propose we put our culture out there.
music... and by actually showing touristz the non-plastic partz of our country... real restaurantz... bahamian theatrical performancez...
Growing 03-23-06, - 04:43 PM Will their acceptance of us change the price of bread or oil for that matter? Let it go and move on people.
it just might change the price of food and oil... we gettin food from the USA now n they send us whatever quality of food they think wasn't good enough for their ppl to eat... why not get the produce that we cannot grow ourselves to sustain ourselves from these countries that produce? that would make us less dependent on the USA and in a more strategic position when they come bout 'oh, ya'll hafta do this cuz we say so or else'....
and as far as the oil... y arent we getting oil from trinidad? or are we now?? i remember leslie dem talkin bout it and then it disappeared... but info is welcome if you have it... the point is, i think it would be far better to work with them than not... if it meanz that we'd get oil for the same price, or possibly cheaper... we are workin with venezuela, or trying to, anywaz... when they goin thru all kinda the most strife... how bout a more stable route... sighz... cost of livin too high... why not look at alternatives close to home... just like in another thread, the poster said they'd rather work with the USA than China because the american experience more closely relates the ours... i'd like to do more business with the rest of the caribbean, especially if it can be cheaper, because their experience closer to ours... JMO...

not really about acceptance y'kno... mutual respect... can't do business without it... if they don't take us seriously, they ga give us a raw deal (not like we been gettin many of those lately)... or at least try...
i wholeheartedly agree with what u say here... but go to a party home... listen to most of the radio stationz home... talk 2 a pile of younger set home... dey into all these other country music... and not our own... if dey say jah cure concert tomorro nite at the sports center or sumthin... i sure he'll make more money in the bahamas in that one nite, than ronnie, geno d and kb put together over the course of a year...
anyhow... i could be totally wrong... it just kept comin up and i wondered...

...well I couldnt tell and you seriously need to broaden your vocabulary because this ignorant moniker is a way overused...my point was that theirs sloppy ghetto english and sloppy country english all bad all american who were you speaken of? who did you think off first? there are more poor and undereducated white americans as there are poorly uneducated blacks...who were you talking about unless you thought all white americans look good and talk nice?
if I were you I would be tactful and diplomatic in what I say, because you can offend many at times.

No matter how much money we invest in their industries, no matter how much trade we do with them it wont change the mentality. Its a mentality that we are dealing with. Sure they will take our money, but that doesnt mean that they will 'respect' our country enough to google it, instead of making asinine comments like in the first thread. Like I said get over it.
