View Full Version : A nation of cheaters?
I was amazed this morning (27th March) as I was listening to BBC radio on line. The question was, “are we a nation of cheaters?” It seems they have their fair share. It made me wonder about us!
There were a lot of people that called in. Here are a few. On the show there was a woman that said she paid someone to sit her exams in University. She got an “A.” Others said that they plagiarized their University papers all the time! There are even sites a person can go to and download whole papers. (I wonder what happens at our College??)
A guy from the US emailed in that, during the last hurricane in Florida he destroyed his car and damaged his house and claimed it was Hurricane damage to claim insurance. He said he knows a lot of people that did it. (So, it is not just England!)
So, what about us? Are we that bad, or worse?

Most people are good, some are bad,I think it is about the same ratio everywhere I have been. What amazes me is the shameless attitude some have concerning this subject when they admit their wrongdoing.

I agree. What surprised me, and it should not have, was the excuse "everyone is doing it!" I don't believe that everyone is! I too was surprised at the lack of shame these people expressed!

"Everyone is doing it" is their pathetic excuse to somehow ease what little conscience they have.I think the most disappointing time I was enlightened by that response was by a person of authority, that I HAD held in high regard until that moment.

It can take a lifetime to develop and maintain a good reputation and it is one of the only things you can take to your grave.Good people don't finish last, they finish well and are well missed.

Well said!
It will come as no surprise to you that I believe in Karma – to put it some what inaccurately, but briefly, “What goes around comes around.” An evil deed done today will come back another day to kick one in the backside. Those that cheat often pay the price when they least expect it.

I absolutely concur,I was taught the same at an early age.The men that taught me are referred to as "giants" in my mind, none physically imposing, few financially imposing but each morally imposing, therefore giants among men.

Is finishing first the "thing?" These days it seems so!
I think Biggy will tell those crooks that his scriptures say "What if a man were to gain the whole world, but lose his soul?" As a Buddhist I would say, "grasping, striving, clinging is the way to sorrow. Why cling to that which is passing away?"
(Not directed at you 12play! I am sure you are a noble person)

That is so true, some of the so called "most sucessful people" are the most unhappy by clinging selfishly to their worldly wants.A very wise man once told me,do a good thing every day,try to do it at the end of your day, because the last thing you do on this earth is how you will be remembered. That man was an uneducated black sharecropper that escaped the south in the 1940's to move his family north..His name was Jessie Davis,a good friend and a good man.

The motto of John Wesley, the founder of The Methodist Church is
"Do all the good you can,
By all the means you can,
In all the ways you can,
In all the places you can,
At all the times you can
To all the people you can
As long as ever you can!"
The first part of Mr. Davis' admonition reminded me of it.

But you know whats so funny.,...
Is that finishing first does not actually mean that you win!!!
:D
In the game of life..alot of people have firsts..presidents and beggars, but will be remembered and etched in the book life?
Or in the hearts of the people??
Very few....
Very few people can be first consistently...but what I give fault for the meek in doing is, not taking advantage when wicked people slip up!
You never give em a chance to breathe when you know they are up to no good...
The thing is, for good people...you must know you live well and balance that with that decent code of social conduct!
Knowing this..you can get away with alot of things and be absolved of any wrong doing!!
"The human psyche is a dangerous but interesting thing"...
We can not find it in our hearts to absolve a murderer, unless it is a battered wife or if done by the state for some heinous criminal.
:uh:

exactly right - they say that to ease their conscience, and it makes the good people feel like nobody has any honor anymore.
if you find a wallet full of cash, your conscience would suggest you turn it in, but at the same time you feel stupid thinking how many people will laugh at you and call you a fool for displaying the character quality of honesty - also if you give it to the cops, their is a 50% chance they'll pocket the money too, lol.

this is a big problem, especially in the bahamas, people break the laws all the time and the government turn a blind eye - how would you feel if you had a music store like those in the malls - and every average joe is selling bootlegs left and right?
i'm not innocent, i have bought bootlegs myself, but before they were so prolific(and convenient and budget conscience) i used to buy originals all the time. I don't think i have ever seen an original Madea and I have like 7!
when i was in C.O.B. and even high school i would rack my brains studying
and i always did well, and actually understood the material, but there was always cheaters with tests from the previous classes, they were astonishingly proud to break even on their exams while I got mostly straight A's and B's they consistently got C's and D's.

those exams at COB were so hard! anyways, when I went abroad to school, my roomates would order essays off of the net left and right. Now I hear they are attorneys....guess that makes perfect sense now that I look at it.
