The Office of the Chairman, Bahamas Young Democratic Association
In light of the Bahamas’ 30th independence celebration, I made a conscious decision to learn more about the man who is given credit for the birth of The Bahamas, The Rt. Hon Sir Lynden Pindling. In doing so I came to analyze the events that lead to his coming into power in the general election of 1967.
I then began to realize why the people loved him so dearly. He brought about a great change in the colony. The people of the colony knew only of a white government and the thought of one of their own was quite alien.
Then came Lynden Pindling, a young black man born and raised with the common folk with the potential to lead the country. He breathed into the hearts and minds of the people the vision of them being in control of themselves. Then he brought about a change.
Change is what separates leaders from managers. It is the duty of leaders to bring about positive changes and improve things. Societies would be stagnant without leaders to delete the obsolete so to speak. Change is perhaps the greatest political asset.
We have seen throughout the years how powerful the promise of change is to an opposing party. In 1967, the PLP promised to change the oppression of blacks. In 1992, the FNM promised Deliverance, to root out the infamous corruption of the PLP. In 2002, the PLP promised a Fresh Wind, to root out the corruption of the FNM. Three elections, all victorious with the use of one premise, the promise of change.
Let us look at the leaders of these parties:
Sir Lynden Pindling
Hubert Ingram
Perry Christie
The only Prime Ministers the Bahamas have had are Sir Lynden and his two protégées. So therefore one can safely say that the Bahamas has had no REAL change in government since 1967.
Also imagine if the results of the 2002 elections were different. If the FNM had won we would have a Prime Minister who is the protégé of a protégé of Sir Lynden. If the CDR had won then our Prime Minister would be another of Sir Lynden’s political students. Only in the scenario of a BDM victory do we have a true change. We are the only political party in existence not spun off from the PLP. This very fact that has served to be our weakness (in that we have neither the PLP’s money nor fame) can serve to be our greatest strength.
We, the Bahamian public are fed up with the same ole corruption and victimization. What many of us don’t realize is that we have the same ole problems because we are ever loyal to the same ole people. There is a saying that goes a leopard cannot change its spots. We have had three corrupt administrations who all share the same “all for me baby” mentality. We WILL continue to be subjected to the same corruption if we continue to tolerate it by not standing up. Fellow Bahamians, stand together with me as we give a resounding NO to corruption and release ourselves from the shackles of hopeless. Enough is Enough and it IS Time For a Change!
