"Hotel employees, who assembled themselves in the Goodman's Bay parking lot at 7 a.m. on Monday, said they are fed up with the "inaccurate tabulating of gratuity" and are "tired of the slave-like treatment" they receive from management."
Here's a thought ..... QUIT!!

Yes they do. They also had an agreement. I blame the union as well as management! As I read the article I see that people talking about not getting their agreed payments for five or ten years! Why wait so long? The moment, the instant, the second that one party defaults on the agreement - that is when you take action! The longer one leaves it the less one will ultimately get in back payments. Management counts on that.:shhh:

I feel that unions throw out these outrageous charges so that public outcry will pressure corporations and/or companies to open their books to prove the claims false. Once said corporation/company has divulged that financial data the union will use the info during subsequent negotiations. it is a classic bait and hook tactic. Hopefully most executives in The Bahamas are becoming savvy to these tricks.
If however the claim is valid, pay the people no matter how long they let you get away with it before.
12play 04-06-06, - 05:56 AM how about taking a baseball bat to the one that wronged you? I say since our institutions are corrupt and cannot be trusted to protect us we must protect ourselves..while we are at it let us have a race war..plp and fnm get a pass to kill each other ( I would like to see Hubert v. Keod), and when we are done those who survive can begin again with a clean slate...
Rizzo 04-06-06, - 10:08 AM Firstly, Sandals is not a part of the union and does not have one.
Their employees are treated poorly, and can be fired based on 1....yes ONE...customer complaint. A girl there got fired for cracking a joke with a guest that the guest found inappropriate. There is just no security in the hotel at all.
I know this first-hand because my sister worked for them. She just left like 3 weeks ago to work for a bank. She couldn't take it there anymore. She was an excellent staff member, got awards and stuff, but the managers there were disgusting and rude. Think of them as slave drivers telling Kunta that his name is Toby. My sis' base salary was still $350 a week, after over 7 years I think. Gratuity was good, she said, but is never guaranteed, especially when a hurricane comes, or something else happens where the hotel is left unoccupied. And she was also tired of working those funny shifts. I'm surprised that these people actually went public with their concerns though. It was a bold move. But the funny thing is right....nothing will happen, and nothing will change. I think this will blow over, and those workers will be worse off than before.
These people have no one to turn to to help them, so I empathize with them. and Rory, I'm usually on your side of opinion on many things, but your statement was a bit insensitive. Alot of these people cannot quit and find other jobs because the Hotel industry is all they know. They're not entrepreneurs like you; alot of them do not have a higher level of education where they have degrees that are sought after elsewhere; bottom line...they need the job, but also need better treatment. I understand that you cannot put yourself in their position, so therefore, don't be so quick to judge them.

I cant now, but i sure have, try living off hot patties and hot dogs for years ... ;-) There are other jobs and other hotels ... People always have a choice, if you work for someone else you are never truly free to do whatever you want .. thats why I dont work for someone else, and I had noone to help me BTW.

It's not as easy as you think for some people to find another job Rory. And it's not just about doing whatever you want ya know, it's just about being treated fairly. Trust me, stress on a job is a SERIOUS thing.
But I think Bahamian people on a whole need to think more along the line of working for themselves. Use jobs as stepping stones to getting into their own businesses. Most people just focus on getting a job to have for the rest of their lives.
So how did you find your freedom Rory? I'm sure you had something to help you along the way. No one quits then starts their own business the next day, unless they had a good job where they earned, and saved alotta money, to prepare for such a move. Do you have any degrees by the way?

No degrees. Just started doing it .. going around and speaking to people, spent alot of time (sometimes 48 hours straight with no sleep) testing and learning the industry.
I spent many years making nothing and my jeep being taken back by the bank, and then some .. finally i built up contacts and have just this year been asked to work for a large company in the US with all the benefits and profit sharing.
It takes alot of sacrifice, I havent had a life since I started working for myself, and ive been broke since i started .. but whatever it takes .. hot patties for dinner and hot dogs for breakfast ... ;-)

I admire your determination and confidence. You are very fortunate to have made a success of yourself. Not many people can win the battle against failure/hardship.
For people like these hotel workers though, hopefully something will work out for them.
