The other day, I entertained some "matured" Bahamians opinions regarding today's Educational system. From what I gathered, they are of the belief that their educational system was superior to what it is now.
Of course I had to remind them that it was not until recently, Bahamians were able to attended school up to grade 12. Once upon a time, only the rich and the extremely gifted were able to attend high school, (if you had a grade 6 education you were lucky). Moreover, only the rich and the gifted were able to take O'levels...(Infact, one had to be recommended by your teacher in order to take o'levels). That being said, I propose that our grade level was always at a "D" level, in fact, I think, it is much high today than it had been 20 years ago!

20 years ago their was still structure in the homes and neighbours cared!
20 years ago 6th graders could read and write
20 years ago let alone 30 years ago was worlds away from the social crisis the comman man face on these Bahama streets...the 30 year old Bahamian grammy is a reality today...

So, one should consider the social situation when grading exams...

So, one should consider the social situation when grading exams...

...a 6th grader today may not be able to read and write but a sixth grader of yesteryear more than likely did know how to...the social climate has a lot to do with how well kids do on their exams so yes one should consider the social situation when grading exams...we live in different times

True!

Also, if you go to a PTA meeting only the teachers and a few parents are there. A sad sight to see, indeed. Parents need to take a more active role in their kid’s education.

I have a problem with the fact that Spanish and French are apart of the primary school curriculum. These kids can’t read and write English properly and we are giving them a second language….???? No WAY!

In secondary school if kids show enough aptitude then a foreign langue should be an option also computers but if you cant read and write these things are not helping.

Maybe I will publish my PhD thesis on the topic.

new grade levels work like this:

90 - 100=A
80 - 90-B
70 - 80=C
60 - 70-D
50 - 60=E
40 - 50=F
30 - 40=G

I may not have it exactly correct, but it's close to that anyway.
so you see, D is a passing grade.

Did you read my post?

"These kids can’t read and write English properly and we are giving them a second language….???? "

The ones (THE MAJORITY) who cant read and write english should not be given a second language.

Maybe your kids dont fit in what I was talking about.

B very good 89-80
C passing 79-70
D poor 69-55
