I have tons of pictures and now that i have time, I will do some graphics projects over the summer, mybe even learn flash (which I may come back to ask about). Anyway......

A few weeks ago the thumbnail views pictures in my pictures just went poof. only little icons replaced them. I've tried one fix and the thumbnails have come out distorted an pixiated, I've googled and yahooed the problem many times and the majority is irrelevant and BS. So i'm turning to anyone here to help me! I cannot sift through 658 identical icons!!!

are you talking about the windows thumbnails, that show up inside folders?

If so, first try this .. if you havent already

While inside a folder view such as my Documents,
Goto TOOLS, FOLDER OPTIONS, click on the VIEW tab which is right next to the GENERAL tab.

Click the button that says "RESET ALL FOLDERS"

That will default all folder views - which will set Thumbnails for Images.

If you re talking about windows Icons, just the general stuff .. download TweakUI
http://www.download.com/Tweak-UI/3000-2341_4-2830963.html?tag=lst-0-2

Unzip it to somewhere, then go there and right click on the ini file, and left click INSTALL

Then goto the Control Panel and Locate TweakUI

Find the REPAIR tab .
Select REBUILD ICONS from the drop down and click the REPAIR button.

If that doesnt work let me know. There are other options.

You know "My Pictures"? when you select thumbnail view, you should get little mini previews of you pictures. Yeah they show up in folders. im only getting icons of the application throught which it shows up (Microsoft Office Picture Manager).

Okay, sounds like malware. did you run any scanners yet?

If not then run these 2 cleaners to start with:
http://www.ccleaner.com/ - use both the Cleaner and the Issues (dont save the registry unless you want to)
http://www.stevengould.org/software/cleanup/
(click Options and make sure Standard Cleanup is selected first)

NOTE: you will need to relogin to all forums after this as it deletes cookies also.

Then download Ewido and Trojan Hunter:

Ewido - http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Trojan Hunter - http://www.misec.net/trojanhunter/

quarentine and then remove all found infections.

NOTE; you will need to either uninstall Ewido afterwards or goto Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, and find Ewido and Disable it so it doesnt run as a service; as it does by default. Trojan Hunter, just dont install the Guard - or uninstall/unload the guard after installation. Ewido keeps working for ever (limited) but Trojhan Hunter runs out after so many days.

Then download and install Firefox from Mozilla.com, use that from now on.

Also, do you have any anti virus installed?

Ok so you can try that first, or install Ultra VNC and let me jump on and fix it for you remotely.

Rory, you say do not save the registry when using Issues in CCleaner. Is there any reason for that as I always save it in case I do damage. I am dead scared of messing with registry.

What happened is that your default viewing application appears to have been changed.

Go to the my computer folder, select the "tools" menu, "folder options", then select the "file types" tab (third one) at the top of the "folder options" window. Scroll down the list for JPG files. Highlight that file type, then click the "change" button in the lower section of that screen.

Select "Windows picture and fax viewer" from the list of applications and then make sure that the checkbox next to "always use the selected program to open this file" is checked. Click "ok", click "close" and you're done.

(re-enable thumbnail viewing if it isn't already enabled)

After doing EVERYTHING............nothing is showing.......and I am close to physically and verbaly abusing my computer.

BTW...thumbnails were showing long after I changed the application months ago

are the ending extensions "jpg" or "jpeg"? If they are the latter, try changing the viewer association of "jpe" and "jpeg" files in file type options.

Another thing to do would be a system restore to an earlier point or to run:

sfc /scannow

which is the system file checker. Make sure that you have your windows XP cd handy.

And if the problem persists after doing all of that, a repair installation of windows XP wouldn't hurt. You wont lose any documents or programs either.
