Nassau does have certain areas that stink, mostly the smell of urine, or fermenting grease from the storage tanks outside of restaurants. Many european cities suffer from these same odors, and certainly I've smelled some things in southeast asia that would knock you over, but it is possible to walk the streets of New York all day, and find nary an offensive odor. Go figure.

Eh? Man walking in Manhattan is like walking through the city dump, especially at night when they put out their trash, then in the morning when the trash is still there, or as the stench from all that trash still remains and is wafting through the air.

Arent we a tourist destination?
And smells should be at least at a minimum?
We are only rouhghly 150 thousand on one island...
And, we have holy roller conservative old time clean freaks, who grew up in supposedly clean houses.
What gives!

Nassau is a dirty city, no question about it, and the reasons behind the mess is:

NASTINESS. Some people have absolutely no pride in their external surroundings. Their yards will be littered with garbage, old vehicles, old appliances, etc. Your surroundings says alot about your tidiness as an individual.

Stray dogs. How many of you here have woken up to your garbage toppled over by some disgusting strays first thing in the morning. We need to clean up Nassau of all these stray potcakes roaming around. Not only do they create a mess of people's garbage, they are danger particulalry in packs

They are bedridden

I have been wondering what is the smell myself. You know theres something wrong when a tourist says, quoting from an expedia(?) tourist testimony "I think the country has a bad smell".

If it's not the regular stink it the dump that decides to burn. (Maybe they need dedicated firefighters just for the dump?)

I dont think its just nastiness and dogs though, with the amount of cars on the street....and some not the very latest and not in the best condition, they give off so much fumes....I smell that more than anything else. Do you know how many dump trucks are on the island spewing so much exahst? Some regulation should be done on that. And some cars smoke so badly that they really should be impounded.....And dont start about jitneys!!!!!!!

I think that the air quality in New Providence should be tested and analyzed. Though the Ministry of Health currently has no real numbers on the amount of cancer cases in the country...it might be startling to know how poor, polluted air is contributing to a variety of illnesses on the rise in New Providence.

I travel back and forth to Nassau often and I notice that when I am there, I breathe differently..my breathing is not as free and clear.

Espcially asthma which alot of people have! I see alot of cites take an air quality test almost daily. Also, do you think there are enough tress? Like near the inner city? I'm not talking about the coconut and palm trees I mean bushes and shrubs and the like. Mostly in those area at least the smell is a little less intense, if not negated all together.

Absolutely. Any vehicle producing visable smoke needs to be pulled off of the road immediately. This is easy to implement, no fancy expensive equipment needed. A diesel running properly should not be producing any visable emissions unless it is under load and wot conditions.

If everyone starts with keeping their own house and yard clean with pride then things will improve. One neighborhood at a time. Remember when 100 Jamz had "litter bug" , I now rarely see people throw trash out of their cars. It's the attitude of the people.

BTW: compare to many other Caribbean countries Nassau does not even compare to their trash.

Nah I aint say that everyone is keep trash in their cars but it's a decrease from before. Back in the late 80s and early 90s you were dodging in between traffic from the cans. Now, you have 1 or 2 litter bugs.
