View Full Version : Moratorium on Gated Communities Rory 06-25-06, - 05:21 AM Lol you too funny .. hey if they trespass on my prop i got a cultass to take care of biz ... beach or not .. my homie ..... Ting-um 06-25-06, - 09:44 AM People are crazy. 1. When I make it back to Nassau I'm living in a gated community of one. With a drawbridge, moat, and electric fence. I have kids, so for me its better safe than sorry. 2. I can empathize with the sentiment that Bahamians are locking themselves away from other Bahamians behind these walls. But, the days when your grandmother could walk down to Ms Adderly dem corner shop to buy some salty and 25 cent cup are gone. I grew up all over Nassau. My grandmother had 60 grandchildren. 60!!!! So I have cousins, aunts, and uncles everywhere. From Kemp Road to Adelaide Village to Fox Hill -- everywhere. The first time I got into a fight I was 5 years old walking from St Bedes to Mount Rose Ave. -- I'm not talking about he pushed me then I pushed him back. I'm talking about him pulling a knife on me and almost sawing my arm off. Still have the scar, three inches long now but at age five it extended from my back to my chest. That was just the first of a dozen others. What's my point?? My point is yall are living in denial. Maybe you didn't grow up like I did. But you have to respect my decision to live my life where and how I want to. I mean yall are ready to let sissies live how they feel. But I can't have a gate?? 3. Just because you born in the Bahamas don't mean its yours. When Bahamians start treating the Bahamas with respect, then they can claim it. How many time you see Bahamians on the beach having a picnic or party then leave their mess right there?? People pretending like they in the NBA trying to dunk in the trash can and when they miss, they expect the the trash to levitate itself into the trash can. Get real, I'm not paying 2 million for a house on the beach so a bunch of weed smoking dunces can come gallivanting around me and leaving a pile of kalik bottles for me to pick up. Call me elitist if you wish. I'm being real. When you start being real and enforce litter laws and noise pollution laws -- then we can talk. Until then, if you breathe at my house funny you better know how to do the Matrix. Tafadhali 06-25-06, - 11:44 AM Sounds like you will be voting BNP... Years ago, gated communities were know as “Cantonments” Originally, they were temporary living quarters specially built by the army for their soldiers. There was usually a fence, or better yet a wall around it and it was a fairly safe place to be in a hostile land. They were very common in India. They were not really Forts, but pretty close. The temporary quarters soon became permanent and rich Europeans found them to be good places to build a home within it’s walls. It was safe, there were soldiers to protect you when the “natives got restless!” Cantonments began to grow into small European settlements within a alien land. My Mother told us about the one in Madras it was like being in England! People were proud to announce that their address was The Cantonment, Madras! So the Gated Communities we have here are a throw back to that time in Colonialism - surrounded with a fence, an army (or in our case Security Guards) and a group of people with a common interest, in our case money, and/or a need for security. So, perhaps we should call them what they are, Cantonments! One house with a wall around it does not a Cantonment make - or even a gated community! PS. I don’t live in one but I have friends that do. They get bugged when I call it by that name!! Ting-um 06-25-06, - 12:40 PM ...cause aint no soldiers in nassau.. blackscorpion 06-25-06, - 05:12 PM Old Fort Bay looks promiseing...I'm already makeing inquiries Yippee !!
