View Full Version : Suicide?
FACTS ONLY 06-07-06, - 08:49 AM The man whom one or two of the escaped prisoners claimed gave them the hack saws to cut their cell bars has been found dead, sitting upright in his car on the Potters Cay dock.
Van Johnson had been recalled a few times to answer questions based on claims he had done certain things. He had maintained that he was a career officer and had done nothing he was accused of.
Police do not supect foul play!!!

And because the police said they dont suspect foul play, the media decided "oh ok, lets just bury this story then"!! Come on nah..the man implicated in assisting in the prison break (and who knows what else he might have done before or during that break) is suddenly found dead in his car?
Thats front page story jack....

i agree.
nationbuilder 06-07-06, - 09:45 AM It is incredible how passive, lazy and gullible the press corp in the bahamas is man! Anything you tell them..they just accept it and go along with it! If a public official makes a statement..they practically never research it out to determine whether that statement is indeed factual etc...and if a public official says "oh, its nothing", thats just how they run the story..like its nothing.
Lemme tell you, American TV news in particular has strayed far from the tenets of journalism in some respects, but what I like about the U.S is that public officials fear the media jack. They always are on the "hey, we dont want the media to get wind of this" stance.
Thats how it should be...but oh well.
Alien 06-07-06, - 09:53 AM Well nation builder, they have limited access to the truth in the "quasi" police state.
I allways knew this prison break came from a very angry source, and may very well be political.

I hear ya..but its not just about the police force when it comes to media largesse...the press corp in our country needs serious help man..because the things they let go, let slip through the cracks, the personalities they pamper, the critical information that gets left un-delved into and explored..the simple facts that are NEVER checked...
A weak free press is almost as dangerous as a stifled press sometimes, in a democracy.

If the press was on point,we wouldn't have no politicians as 90% of them would either be in jail or to scared to even run.

Tafadhali 06-07-06, - 01:18 PM when I said Officer Bowles death was suspicious folks said I was being disrespectful to his memory...man life is stranger than fiction...
nationbuilder 06-07-06, - 01:26 PM arent you a journalist??
Yes I am, thats how I know what the state of Journalism is in this country. It does not mean that EVERY SINGLE journalist in this country isnt doing his or her job..it means that there are far more who arent than those who are..and then too, those who try to are in some cases working for news organisations whose media bosses threaten their jobs for them doing their jobs.
Also, there are many people working in news in The Bahamas who have no journalistic training or background...and any journalist knows that this field isnt something you just jump into with no context or no "nose for news" as we say.
So alot of times when news breaks, those reporters sit there like "duh", because they dont know the issues, they dont know the background..in some cases they dont even know the people or key players involved, and they dont understand what the essential point of the story is.

Yep, seems thats prevelant in alot of industries here ..
nationbuilder 06-07-06, - 01:30 PM But do you agree or disagree?
I agree, yes. And to that I also add though that because public officials are not required by law (freedom of information act) to turn over info, it is difficult for resporters to get the info they need to expose alot of what these public officials are doing or have done.
