View Full Version : Malaria
12 cases in the Bahamas, mostly, if not completely in Exuma.
What do you think about it?
Malaria is an infectious disease caused by the sporozoan parasite. It is transmitted by the bite of the Anopheles mosquito, of which there are few here. The symptoms are high fever and chills. They say that Malaria can kill you. Well, that is not really true. The truth is that it weakens you to a point where you can die from just about anything else that afflicts you.
Once you get it, it can “come back” from time to time - for years, and years!!!

Well I am seeing that ignorance in some sections of the media is already coming to bear..trying to suggest that Haitians have brought the disease here and are spreading it.
As you have correctly stated, you can ONLY get malaria through a bite from an anopheles mosquito..you cannot get it any other way. It cannot be "spread" from person to person. That type of mosquito was probably already here, though it could have also come here through our voluminous container imports of various products - its how other animals not native to the Bahamas have gotten here.
Some of the cases of malaria are of Haitian Nationals. And this proves absolutely nothing. Some of the victims are also from Uraguay..so what does that mean?
The issue now is that the disease carrying mosquito is here, and no doubt other cases exist since it takes up to a month for active symptoms to develop in some cases..so it is a cause for concern indeed.

they say it was "imported" that was a euphemism for more...we had a Minister of Health who sympathizes with the illegal immigrants because of his bias...imagine what else we dont know about or he kept from us ...is TB on the rise too?...all these illegal squatting on Bahamian land has Water Works in conjunction with MOH did a study to see if the stink water is in direct relation to this? and after all this time...this is we still dont know what else the IOM findings speculated what we already know...

And I doubt we will get all those questions you just raised answered, and not on the basis of politics either I mean.
According to the CDC, malaria is found almost exlsuively in Africa, Latin America and Asia, and ofcourse as we know from biology, protozoa exist EVERYWHERE.
The "imported" argument is a load of crap as far as I'm concerned...because if these people came here with malaria, but the anopheles mosquito is not here in the Bahamas..then Bahamians have nothing to fear anyway...so obviously officials know more about the possibility of outbreak than what they are saying in order to avoid panic.
trubahamian 06-13-06, - 09:14 PM Wha do I tink about malaria, west nile virus or eastern equine encephalitis?
Spray da damn mosquitoes! I want a safe and clean environment, but safe first... for us humans! This is ridiculous! These so-called conquered diseases (polio and tuberculosis included) are comin' back tu haunt us.

hey nbow leave the environmentalist alone...if those sprays and insectacides can harm us and our way of life...we also lose...need I remind you...malaria is curable...our Govt should have the resources...with pills or vaccine shots...oops the babies died....so we will die...
but seriously, no need to jump down the throats of the environmentalist...they serve a purpose..trust me in the long run they will be our saving grace...

dont forget avian flu...
MOH and NEMA need to step up to the plate...get some help in here from WHO, Internation health NGO's...

Strictly speaking you are right but as I understand it an Anopheles mosquito - uninfected - can bite a person - infected - absorb the parasite and then pass the infection on to the next person it bites. But the disease can only be transmitted by the Anopheles.

All I want to add is to warn people NOT to take any Larium anti-malaria medecation. That stuff will seriously mess you up, I can attest first hand to that. There are a few alternatives out there that should be chosed before Larium. Unfortunately, Larium is all that can be found in Nassau.

I do believe in saving da environment, but i tink environmentalists, especially in da States go too far.I feel they are now becoming a self serving entity in da name of themselves, much as the labor unions of the us have.BTW/I do realise malaria is curable(to a degree) but west nile virus and eastern equine are not and human life is most important to me.This ting is all about balance.

Quinine was the old treatment the British used “Out East.” It is bitter, so some clever fellow added some Gin to it! Hence, Gin and tonic! (Tonic = Quinine)
As I understand it Chloroquine is the drug of choice now. It also contains some quinine.

It is a potentially fatal form of encephalitis/w no known cure or vaccine.I believe it was originally a horse only disease dat jumped tu humans.

Well see the thing is, the MOH has yet to say what strain of Malaria these people have become infected with...
