Yeah well im coding a VOIP related program right now .. so there .. huh .. skype rocks! michali 06-16-06, - 02:25 PM actually its not VOIP in the technical term, but it is basically the same idea. What makes it different, Rory? Cos there's MSN messenger with voice, Yahoo with voice and with each of them you can call a telephone number (after paying a few bucks) or a computer (free) Surely, it is all VOIP? And is it true (see below) that if you are using Cable Bahamas, it is legal to use VOIP? As I said in an earlier post, if that is the case, we all just switch to Cable. Then BTC will really be in trouble! I find emailing the best way to communicate and never did make international calls...always get my kids to call me!! Much cheaper for them to do so. But if I am going to pay BTC each month for my internet connection, I would like to know I can use it to the full. http://www.thebahamasguide.com/facts/communications.htm "Thankfully, with the introduction of broadband competitors, like Cable Bahamas (a godsend), the situation has improved drastically for Internet users. Also many Bahamians on Cable Bahamas are switching their international phone calling to VOIP services like Vonage which are 100 times cheaper than the Batelco monopoly service (Link: Rate comparison between Batelco and a popular U.S. phone company). If you subscribe to DSL with Batelco, you are not permitted to use low cost VOIP services on your broadband connection, though word "on the street" is that many Batelco DSL subscribers do (and some even had them installed by Batelco employees)." Rory 06-16-06, - 03:31 PM Its different technology .. if they are doing Internet Telephony now though, not sure .. i dont and will never use either of them for obvious reasons .. Here's a scenerio .. i dont have a land line at my place, only a cell and its killing me in cost .. so im writing a program that connects to a server elsewhere in Nassau, and then dials the number, then I can talk as i was there .. they can call it VOIP till the cows come home but its not .. its my own technology .. well basically its winsock and tapi .. and some other stuff by MS .. As for DSL .. if they wanted they can simply start blocking ports, so it cant be that illegal .. ;-) Jer 06-16-06, - 03:55 PM You can call anyone with skype, and the quiality of audio is much much better. Skype is the Present and future of VOIP. I find vonage crystal clear. Does skype cost anything? Rory 06-16-06, - 04:08 PM I find vonage crystal clear. Does skype cost anything? Skype is free PC to PC, they have the pricing on their web site for outgoing and incoming calls .. its dead cheap though, and is clearer than Vonage as they use high end audio equipment. Other things it has over Vonage is it works behind firewalls, and also, when they start blocking ports and you cant use vonage anymore, skype will still work. Even the owners of Vonage have started making products for Skype .. they know its the future .. actually its the present in Europe where it was founded they have all the hardware already there.. they also give out free APIs so many people have developed 3d party hardware and software for it .. now its actually owned by the owners of Ebay .. but was developed by the guys that brought us Kazaa .. YEah I just checked out their web page. Its not totally free if you want to talk to land lines. Vonage does have some advantages but they are more expensive. The one th ing is that Vonage is a bigger company and I assume they will try to keep and expand their buisness and make things more competetive. I am not ready to get rid of Vonage yet though. garnelleo 06-16-06, - 04:32 PM YEah I just checked out their web page. Its not totally free if you want to talk to land lines. Neither are totally free to talk to land lines, but they are cheap. 0.02 cents to talk to the UK .. for example. Ebay is HUGE ... the owners of Vonage .. Cisco .. are building products for Skype now, as they know they cant beat it, they gotta join it .. :) Either way .. im working on my own .. ;-) garnelleo 06-16-06, - 05:12 PM What does this imply? Vonage is a bigger company.... I guess since ebay purchased Skyp. Skype can be integrated into eBay current and future offerings, and give Skype the financial backing of a giant like eBay. islandgyal 06-16-06, - 05:29 PM skype also works with dialup, when you don't have access to DSL or cable modem ... Rory 06-16-06, - 05:44 PM skype also works with dialup, when you don't have access to DSL or cable modem ... And on your Pocket PC with Streaming Video, voice, chat, or telco .. if yah got wireless or hit a hot spot .. plus no chance of malware like MSN and Yahoo .. Great Demos 06-16-06, - 05:47 PM There are hundreds if not thousands of Vonage users out there. If such practice is so illegal then they should do something about the importation or thse products. I am sure some goverement customs agent charged duties on a Vonage Phone. Also, that makes talking to a bud in the US or Canada in MSN Messenger with a mic illegal. Doubt govt that smart or concerned to look into these things, ie, the importation of phone equip. Maybe PUC is a culprit for not being knowledgeable enough to advise BTC to go modern and use VOIP. I think is was Yorick Brown who suggested that on this board about a year ago! That is, that BTC modernise and use VOIP! Ah well, our lawyer-govt! I don't think lawyers are trained to be profit conscious -- probably just trained to sit and twiddle their thumbs until someone gets into trouble so they can have something to do. But a business man is a different creature. He would be actively planning and checking every little item/merchandise every minute of every day, in order to make a profit and be ahead of the competition! U experience this rory? nope, its the best ive ever heard .. its not upload/download though and quality will always depends on the users sound card, mic, head set, internet connection .. etc.. Ummm, now since i dont get paid by Skype .. why not download and try it already .. :-))) |
