After the tour led by immigration authorities, the deputy prime minister told reporters that she was deeply concerned by what had happened, but when asked whether the latest incident signaled a failure in security, she said, "No. I don’t view it as a failure."

She added, "Things happen. We just have to try to work and try to move as we go along. All around the world people escape. The Bahamas is not new to this. Other countries that have the resources they have escapes, and so we are not perfect. We don’t have the kind of resources to do what we need to do. Certainly, we’re working at it and we’re doing the best that we can."

Another example as to why Mother Pratt should have never left the grassroots fight she does not have the acumen to be a politican.

Why don't they interrogate the boat captain arrested along with the Cuban women that tried to escape. Or did they let him go?

Why hasn't a Bahamas Journal reporter gone down to the courthouse with a camera and take a picture of that Boat captain on his way to and from court?

Why don't they just ask the cops who this person is by getting a copy of the arrest report? Surely he knows who is beind the break outs. it has to be defense force officers thats why nothing is happening.

This is a national embarrassment. Worst of all no one in the upper levels of the defense force seems to care that the country is being made a mockery of.
Oh but maybe I shouldn't be so sensitive after all according to Mother Pratt
Things happen" and "all around the world people escape"

she sounds like she's been making a bunch of excuses getting all defensive like that..."were not perfect"..."were not the only ones"..."we dont have the resources"...her disposition and non-chalant attitude is a national disgrace enough...it is oh so clear that she has no idea of the grave circumstances surrounding this matter...this is shameful.

someone shouldve been fired for this...this is like the 100th break already...she should have lost her job for sheer incompetence, the head of the detention center could possible leave also, the supervisor in charge definately must go and Ive been saying this for a minute now...davey rolle must go...its so obvious the officers dont respect him coommand or his authority so he must go!

Would the following solve the dentention centre issues:

Engage the services of the US coast guard to arrest these "stray" boats of illegals headed for our shores, turn them around and escort them from whence they came, period!

Don't know how much this would cost us, but it could well be cheaper than housing all those detainees at the detention centre, the expense (and frustration) of keeping them there so long and the big expense of returning them via Bahamasair every so often!

The few that are not caught at sea can be kept at the prison to await repatriation. That way there would be no need for a detention centre.

A Big Lol @ this. FYI: The majority of the detainees are brought there by US coast guard.

Are the letting the Cubans out!?!?
How come only they are escaping!?!?

Are the Cuban exiles in Miami paying for the Cubans to "escape"..?
This needs to be checked into. I do not for one second think this is a coincidence, and it shows that there is something fundamentally wrong at the detention centre. It has been there before the PLP and now with the PLP.

This reeks of corruption. And all the DPM can say is...sh*t happens.

Marichal, do you understand what I am trying to say? I mean for an official govt to govt arrangement to be made between our govt and the US govt even if we have to pay for it.

Maybe our defense force could also be involved...but our defense force alone is probably too small to do the job.

It is clear that we Bahamians cannot securely contain the Cuban refugees at the detention centre. Either the Cubans have their own keys, are paying off somebody or are just blatantly smarter than the officials there. In any case, I say let them out and save us the expense of keeping them locked up for the six months before they escape again.
