Hmmmm, $20 million our broke hips dont have .. wait ta go teachers .. now the kids really know yah could care less about them and their futures ..
absolutbahamian 07-08-06, - 10:30 AM Education is expensive, but the lack of it is more so. Teachers get lost to the private sector every year because of better pay. The Bahamas needs to do all it can to keep them there. Teachers don't become teachers for the money, but to pay them a pittance for their work is criminal.
islandgyal 07-08-06, - 10:40 AM were any math teachers involved in the negotiations:) ?
$20 million over three years, at $35,000 maximum per year runs to more than 190,000 teachers in the country. since when do we have a 1:2 teacher/student ratio? or are BUT senior execs really pulling in the big salaries these days?
what am i missing? is my calculator broken?
I wonder if we will see $20mil better work out of the teachers? :sarcastic
absolutbahamian 07-08-06, - 11:07 AM I went to private school, and when I went to visit public schools with my aunt during breaks, they were using books I had used years ago. There weren't enough books for the student in the class and my aunt had to go and buy books for them. Don't even get me started on the class sizes that were double or triple the size of mine. Now for a government that doesn't provide the best (or even enough) materials (and that is every government), the fact that these children know what they do is based on the dedication of the teachers.
For a country that claims to want to better itself, we sure don't take education seriously. And for everyone who complains about how 'much' the teachers are getting, I'd like to see them live on it.

Maybe that $20mil should have been spent on books etc. etc.?
absolutbahamian 07-08-06, - 11:38 AM That money hadn't been allocated to books before and in that time the cost of living has increased. Gas, housing, food, child care are all things that teachers need to have and after getting an advanced degree $20,000 is about what they were paying a year to get that degree.
If teachers had been given meaningful increases on par with other public servants with a degree and professional certificate, they wouldn't have needed to fight for that $20 million in the first place.
As I said before, education is expensive, but $20 million to keep teachers happy and not in the poor house, is a lot less expensive than the social ills associated with little or no education. That money allows a teacher to pay the baby sitter for a few more hours so they can spend some time after school helping a student who is struggling.

lol...i know some teachers that appear like that but i also had some seriously dedicated ones as well. I think a lot of teachers let the fact that many students don't care get to them.

That is some interesting math.
Lets see, it is actually $20,000,000 over five years.
So....
$20,000,000 / 5 Years
$4,000,000 / $28,000 average annual salary (guesstimate)
150 Salarys. This sounds about right.
Were any math teachers involved in your education?
