Maybe we should! I am watching the news as I write this. We should care about the news of the place we live.

Yes we are definetely spoiled by American television. I too often here Bahamians make the remark that they dont watch ZNS. Well how will you know whats going on in your own country if you dont watch local news. Do you think CNN, FOX, or MSNBC will cover it unless it has an international impact, I think not. I am in Canada right now and I read the Nassau Guardian and Bahama Journal online editions religiously every day. When I am home in Nassau I read them as daily as possible. Hey ZNS aint the best, but i dont believe its the worst. No other TV station will give me Bahamian news.

Obviously ZNS has no real competition.
My mother has worked at ZNS for the past 25-30 years, and yes, people there do treat their jobs like a hobby. Very few have a degree in anything much less the job that they are assigned.
In the US Fox competes against ABC who competes against NBC who competes against CBS, their affiliates compete, their radio stations compete, even their publications compete for listeners, readers and viewers. You can see from the CBS' Dan Rather story regarding George Bush's military service how vital competition is for quality news.
The problem is, in a market like that where things are privatised, corporations prefer profit over the benefit of the public. I can't think of a solution that will be perfect. I do think that if bahamians made themselves heard that things would change, its to easy to pacify ourselves with american tv, music, news, ideas...while the very little that we have rots.

Folks, don't you enjoy that exciting music leading up to the news? What funeral dirge did they get that from? My First grader can read better than Shanique Miller - too American and too fast. The RJR reporter from Jamaica was a welcome voice.

In summary .. MEDIOCRITY. Why should we not strive to have the best radio and television ststion, run professionally, especially when it happens with our hard-earned tax dollars. We gotta demand better from public corporations. We pay fer it. They reflect us internationally.

Wonder if things would be better if a big private entity like Cable Bahamas (or another private company) gobble up ZNS?
It does not seem that the government wants ZNS changed or improved.
Cable Bahamas claimed one time that they can do anything Batelco can do, maybe they can also do what ZNZ can do.
Just after ZNS TV 7:00 pm new (before the business news), I like to listen to Cable 12 news which comes on at 7:30 pm. Their presentation is better than ZNS', and they give some interesting news items which ZNS don't mention!
(There was news a few days ago that another entity is giving Batelco a run for its money with less expensive phone service).
