nationbuilder 07-14-06, - 12:09 AM SMT - I'm so tired of these 'grasping at straws' stories the Journal keeps putting out about the GBPA. Its obvious the Journal doesnt know what is REALLY going on, nor do they have a context about matter, and they are just regurgitating what anyone will say on the matter...:sparky:
The stories are boring man, really.

LOL
Point of the whole week........people are getting their underwear twisted in a bunch over a private institution. And somehow people think this is somehow illegal.
Dudley 07-14-06, - 12:46 AM Just a constitional question....If the GBPA WAS going to be sold anytime soon
(hypothetically), then doesn't the Gumment have a say on who may buy the 51% or a big chunk of it anyway? I know it's a totally private company, but I'm just curious.....

if they sell it to ginn that will give him too much control in this country...let alone freeport that's not a good idea...but in this country we have monopolies...that would be illegal everywhere else...so I really dont know what to say...sad to say that "no one with a position of authority" in govt just doesnt have the mental make-up or foresight to think about this deal and what it means...I cant believe im actually writing this...

You can't just say this is a private institution so noone should get involved. They control so much of what happens in Freeport and the lives of Grand Bahamians that they have to be monitored. You can't just give The Port a blank check any more than you could give one to The Government. The Port issues licenses, occupancy certificates and most other things that the Central Government does everywhere else, they have to be kept in check or they will be ten times worse than any Government (remember they don't face reelection every five years like the Government).

bahamiangoddess 07-17-06, - 03:45 PM Recently in the news Mirant, an electricity company which produces and sells electricity in the U.S and parts of the Caribbean and who also has controlling interest of 55% of the shares in the Grand Bahama Power Company, announced that it is holding an auction to sell it's shares in the above company as it emerges from Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. As this company is also a part of the Port Authority, it is going to be interested to see who buys and what happens after the purchase. It looks like the Port will have all four burners going at the same time.

Oh how quick we (pre)-tend to forget! Your argument a few months ago was...it is a private institution and as such, makes decision to its best interest (the mike pintard incident)...and needs not answer to anyone as long as no law is broken...something like that!
Further more...the port operates under the same mandate given to it by our governments (UBP,PLP,FNM and now PLP)! They can hire and fire who they damn well please within law! The port is not doing nothing more or less that other "giants" such as Atlantis, Baha Mar, International banks, Cable Bahamas, Sunshine boys,COB etc are doing...to hell with qualified Bahamians...overseas are better! Or we do as we damn well please!
That's how free enterprise operates...according to you! :shhh:
Oh, and by the way...don't bleame the port for our sh!tty local government system...poor LG is our "retarded baby", not the port's! Now you understand why LOP was criticized for taking a five million dollars home from the port...they are more likely to do a "Baha Mar" on ya azz when it come to regulating them...if they gat ya in they pockets!
Pay no attention to that last "snipe"...just done to mess up ya day! :cutie: :cutie: :cutie:
