View Full Version : Traffic Fatality in Grand Bahama
bahamiangoddess 07-29-06, - 11:38 PM Today I passed a traffic accident on East Sunrise Highway and Sargent Major Road. The 63yr old female occupant of a white pick up truck died on the scene. This particular intersection has always been a hot spot, at least 2 to 3 accidents occur here per week. I wonder what Road Traffic is waiting on to fix that situation, it is obvious that the caution light there is inadequate.
thats sad // hope they do something to help fix the problem .. not just a band aid though, like they did here in Nassau with that temporary show of force on JFK .. that lasted maybe 1 month then they got bored and went back to playing dominos ...:escape:

If you put a sign in people food telling them to slow down and leave home in a reasonable time to get where they are going, they will continue to speed, no matter how much public education there is some persons will always think its not for them...with the attitude " oh man I am a good driver" :driving: :driving: are you going to place a :cop: :cop: po po on every corner:bye: :bye: :shhh: if that is done persons will still continue to drive like fools and be killed..... I was on a scene of an accident where the police were investigating, you should see how many persons came speeding through like a bat outta hell through the scene....even though there were signs warning them...notice how Bahamians obey the traffic rules when they are in the USA... then go back to old habits when they return home.....:what: its a pity the death toll will continue to rise:rip: :rip: untill persons take responsibility for their own actions
Speeding is rarely the underlying cause of accidents in the Bahamas.
chancellor 07-30-06, - 01:47 PM I dont know who wants to drive at 20-40 mph (depending on the driver in front of you.... :realmad: I mean in Florida and some other states the absolute limit is 65 - 70 mph. Yeah I mean they have the road to go that fast and a distance to drive, but I find that more accepteble than a speed limit my grandparents (GOd rest their soul) would not have driven at. I know people who wouldn't drive under 60 mph. Some can drive, the others may need some prayers before they walk through the door....

Officials say differently though, they attribute many traffic deaths to speeding...and I know here in Grand Bahama that is definetely the case. We tear up the roads over here. When I lived on East Sunrise, I would lie in bed at night and sware I was living on an Indy Race Track or on an airport runway! I used to have a heavy foot too (I still fall off da wagon sometimes:footmouth ), but after one too many times of almost losing control of my car..I decided I needed to stop being Miss Speed Demon.

If they cant handle the vehicle at 40mph then they shouldnt be on the road ... if they dont know not to overtake on corners, when there is oncoming traffic, or when there is a side road, then they shouldnt be on the road, if they cant reverse through an obstacle, then they shouldnt be on the road, If they dont know not to turn in front of another vehicle or come out in front of one at slow speeds, then they shouldnt be on the road, if they dont know when to slow down on corners and at what speed their vehicle can handle a turn, then they shouldnt be on the road, if they dont use signals, then they shouldnt be on the road, if they dont have working lights, then they shouldnt be on the road, if they dont have insurance, then they shouldnt be on the road, lastly, if they cant drive, then they simply shouldnt be on the darn road!!
Then again, there rarely any form of Road Traffic law enforcement in the Bahamas so ..

See my other post.
Officials here dont have a clue.
it maybe diff in freeport, but here its cause they cant drive, or they are wasted.
another reason the cops will never come to grips with, is that there are no regularly enforced laws on the roads of Nassau, in fact you will never see them after dark or on the weekends; everyone sees the Road Traffic Dept as a big joke right now

Come on Rory!
Speeding is the cause of most of the accidents in which people are killed! What I cant understand is that the more fatal accidents we have, the more people speed!:dgi:

very few ..underlying issues are the actual causes of the accidents, not the "speeding" itself, and until they fix those issues, people will still die. The people may have been "speeding" when the accident occurred, but is rarely the cause of the accident.
I mean, the cops tell people dont speed, yet they fail to say Dont Drink and drive ... and all the other stupid things people do in Nassau.
Great Demos 07-31-06, - 07:30 PM Don't know if you recall the time when Lester Mortimer got killed after being struck down in an accident out west. It was said as he and his family were crossing the road, he let his wife and others cross first and as he was crossing, a car tried to overtake the car they had just disembarked from and he got hit and killed.
To me, overtaking and/or a fast take off are ALWAYS dangerous -- many times when you go to overtake or do a fast takeoff, when you look a person or a vehicle just suddenly materialises right in front of you! And buddy if you eeen gat a good presence of mind and reflex to slam on brake and swerve at the same time there could be bad accident maybe a death!
But though these maneuvers could be dangerous, sometimes we have to do them but we should drive very carefully.
LOL, Maybe im unique .. :)
