Can anyone explain to me how the Bahamas remains economically one of the strongest island countries in the area? With all the issues (Hotel union disputes, poor education, foreigners takin over, including Haitains) the Bahamas faces how can it be so strong financially? Comments?

I think it is, despite what you read on this site, we have had very stable governments - our people are, in the main, stable people. We have transitioned from a Colony to Independence without firing a shot! We have change governments in a peaceful, orderly fashion. Investors etc. like that in a country. They tend not to invests in countries were some looney is running around demanding nationalization, flinging this group out, and demanding all sorts of “odd” things - it makes investors nervous.

You mean what looney country? Zimbabwe springs to mind! So does, or should I say did, England when the Labour party was taxing everyone to death! In those days, the 50's 60's 70's, money from England poured into Nassau - looking for tax relief, looking for some place safe. We was safe ‘den, we is safe now. Well, perhaps not so safe when it comes to ducking taxes as we once were. :shaky:

I dont think the effects of poor education those have fully set in as yet. As far as haitians go, they are productive once they get the chance to participate. Tourism is surviving with union disputes....and these days unions are fighting with themselves. Every other Foreigner is bringing their money to invest. And also with the increase in the economy, we wonder who exactly is benefitting and why not everyone can see it. It could be a case of rich getting richer, poor getting poorer, and middle class stayinig relatively the same.

Perhaps if you saw the condition of the "middle class" in Jamaica, Haiti, The DR or Trinidad you would have a new found appreciation for the downtrodden existence you are leading.

The fact is that The Bahamas prospers because we for the most part can disagree without being disagreeable and have learned to accept defeats at the polls with grace and dignity. I see some hateful petty comments that worry me sometimes but for the most part Bahamians don't get out of hand when it comes to dissent.

Simple.....US dollars, via way of tourists and US investments in business and homes.Want control of our own destiny? Develop new industries, and it een going to be in technology,we too far behind the asians and indians. It needs to be in services and commodities the Americans need or want. They are the only market that could afford to pay the price for services or goods we would produce. Why? Because our lifestyles are much more similar to theirs than say,Mexico or Trinidad. The US dollar has made us upscale...if we want to remain there we need more ways to extract those Franklins!:bahamas:

It depends on what you define economic strength. The Bahamas is economically strong in relation to which island country??

British Virgin Islands, Bermuda and Cayman Islands all have a stronger economy than the Bahamas. In regards to GDP, which as far as I know is the best indicator of economic strength. I think its been mentioned that Bermuda's economy is subsidized by the UK -- which by the way has a lower GDP than Bermuda does. Which doesn't make sense since government spending is a factor in the GDP numbers.

I would venture to guess that the Bahamas can't be compared to Haiti considering the political tensions that have stricken that country for more than 50 years. Jamaica and Trinidad can't attract foreign investment because of proximity and tax structures.

The Bahamas should be the crown jewel of the Caribbean, trumping Bermuda and every other country. We are barely ahead of Puerto Rico and Barbados. Its like having the genetics of a genius but only get C+ grades.

The Bahamian dollar??

No.

The parity is cosmetic. If that's good enough for you, then fine. I doubt anything I say or anybody else says will be persausive enough to change the Central Bank's policy or the minds of Bahamians. If it did then you'd probably be paid a lot less, but things would be a lot cheaper. It would also be very difficult for the Bahamian government to borrow. So I guess its in everybody's best interest to keep the mask on.

Because the Bahamians all over bull crappin everyone..
The Unions bullcrappin da politricktians...
The politricktians are scamin the union mass
The union mass scamin the private sector

So when you look at it.....everyone scammin everyone.
:D
It's a game....
As long as Bahamians can go to Miami every weekend....we will be strong economically.

p.s.
Being the former protectorate of the Second biggest economy, and being the closest neighbor to the largest economy in the world don't hurt either!
