So is BTC shifting to VoIP?

BROADBAND TELEPHONY

ViBe – talking for less – the international calling solution
for residential and small business customers.

* Obtain a telephone number for the U.S., U.K.,
Switzerland or Canada
* Inbound and outbound calling and faxing
* Various calling plans
* Credit limits apply

> Soon to come – Bahamas phone numbers can be used
in any of these countries!

ViBe – talking for less – is a service which allows residential and small business customers to use a standard telephone and broadband internet connection to make and receive phone calls at incredibly low rates. By offering a variety of flexible rate plans and advanced service features, ViBe can meet the calling needs of each customer.

The ViBe difference

* ViBe customers can save substantially on their overseas phone calls to family, friends and business associates, as all calls are routed via the internet.
* ViBe can travel with you! Connect at your hotel and receive your calls as if you were still at home!

How does ViBe work?

ViBe – talking for less – transmits calls securely over the internet via a MTA adapter, plugged into a broadband internet connection. This costs substantially less than routing calls through the traditional telephone network.

Target residential and business markets

ViBe – talking for less – will dramatically reduce communication costs for:

* Residential users who place international calls and receive calls from the U.S., Canada, U.K. Or Switzerland can receive incoming calls at local rates.
For example, a family can have 2 children in college, 1 in California & 1 in Canada, if you purchase a number in both locations, your child will call you at the local telephone rate. You can call them using your local ViBe package. Thereby, both parties save.
* Businesses in frequent contact with international clients, can purchase a ViBe account with a telephone number in the relevant country and make significant savings for their company’s bottom line.

1 TIME ACTIVATION/DE-ACTIVATION FEE
$24.99 PER NUMBER
* NO HIDDEN COSTS *

I don't even spend that much using Batelco land lines!! $34.99 a month to the UK! I will stick to email and the occasional call.

Now you know, Rory, how often we have debated the legality (or illegality) of Skype on this forum. I really do not think the law clearly states that it is illegal to use VoIP but the PUC categorically says it is. I am just too paranoid to risk being charged and taken to court!!! But it will be interesting to see how many customers they get for ViBe....I guess for business places, it is a fairly good rate but if those businesses are already using Skype or Vonage, I cannot imagine them switching to ViBe!

I think BTC is starting to catch on... However, they still have a long way to go.... Do they offer all calling features for 34.99? I agree with michali, I do not think people will just abandon vonage and other services unless Batelco is more competetive. Vonage offers free calling features, no sign up fee and you can call the US, Peurto Rico, Canada, and some parts of Europe as a local call.... So have been told...... I will wait to see how it works and for the price to drop before I consider givint BTC anymore of my money ...

If this is worthy of criticism there must be something wrong here. This is the best and most optimistic news I have seen from BTC since they first announced cellular service (maybe even more than that).

its definately a start ... someone should call them and ask them what their service has to offer over skype and vonage .. :)

Personally i feel they should put their effort into Island Wide Wireless internet . .. i can even put them in contact with a manufacturer of the WISP hardware ... id just like to see it here already .. :(

You can get a Bahamian number in other countries, noone else does that. Alternatively you can get a Freeport number in Nassau if you call there a lot or are called from there a lot.

So that saves on calls to other islands, but not worldwide .. most people using VOIP use it to save on international calls .. in other words what advantage is it giving a person in Florida a Bahamian number to call you on, when you already have a Miami Number with Vonage at a much lower cost?

I think they should really also work with Cisco and Ebay on offering Bahamian numbers to those Networks. ..

Also, VOIP isnt exactly rocket science anymore , im sure with a little work they could have created their own network and software .. but still its a start .. i just think out of the box sometimes :)

That depends on where and who you call most. Most Bahamians spend way more calling a specific single Family Island (whereever their family hails from) every month than they do calling The US every year. Maybe Vonage is better for you, but I guarantee this plan is better for 75% of Bahamians.
