SheriBeri 07-01-05, - 10:34 PM It's not that i dont like the bahamas, I LOVE THE BAHAMAS and i am sure you do to. but i have to look at reality and keep it real. reality is a person usually has to work twice as hard to get half as far in the bahamas; ie you make less and thing cost more. when it comes on to higher education, making real money, job diversity, being a consumer etc. the bahamas isnt there yet; at least for me it isnt. hey you could retire there; i plan to. also to anyone that thinks i am just bad mouthing let me just say i think this way in general ie i would never move to LA, even though i may still be in america, LA is dirrty, crowded, expensive, dangerous man made and natural disasters, the state is broke etc. simply put a person has to go where they feel they can achieve the greatest success.
I hear you. You were just letting me know what was going on from your prospective, and I appreciate that. And yeah, I would love to retire there too but I'll just have to be content with visiting until then.
As far as the badmouthing, shoot, I could tell you stories about Hotlanta, too but I think its all about what one is willing to put up with to have what one wants.
Like, am I willing to forgo my current salary and way of life to live on such a beautiful island with all the laid-back Black folks in addition all the things you mentioned earlier? :dgi: Ponder, ponder, ponder. . . .
You know, actually that's not too bad. Around 70 cents? That's not too bad. In Georgia, we jumped about $1 - $1.25 but on the West Coast, its like $2.50 jump per gallon. But I'm still not happy paying damn near $30 to fill up my Intrepid.
And what you rollin' that great big ole' girl for? :driving: Isn't the island like 2x2 miles? LOL! How much does it cost to fill HER up?
I think I'd get me one of these :escape: and roll that to and fro. Although I'd have to stay home if it rains.
Costs me $70 to fill it up now, used to be $55 back in 2001 when I first got it ..
I mostly got it for work, so I can carry all my tools, a ladder, and have some room for the sound system :D Course i already got rid of the sound system after a couple years of that, it just gets too anoyying after a while ... and right now its just one big tool box. Course now though I love the jeep, I wish Id got it second hand and saved on the big loan im paying off, see cause even though the gas is expensive but can equal out to yours, we pay double on the cars, i paid $32K on a jeep that cost $22K in the US ... so in fact I got a deal :-)))) But for $16K landed here I could have got one out of miami 2 years older .. Arghhh

Holy CRAP! $70?! :screw: Ouch. I can see how you need it for your job and I suspected you were probably in love. I'm in love with my baby, too.
Hey, I thought about you today. After I filled up my car, I was getting ready to bytch and moan. Then I said, NOPE; Rory pays $4 a gallon so SHADAP! :shaky:

Really? I've been wanting to visit Turks and Caicos(sp). It looks like paradise from pictures I've seen.
Which ones have you been to? And who else out there visits or lives on an outisland?

Oh I do love hearing people say stuff like this...
shopfy 08-05-05, - 07:59 PM I'm visiting Nassau for the first time in October. I don't travel much, but I research a lot to learn about the local culture and try to avoid being a "typical tourist".
I'm a white female from the US. I'm amazed by all the discriminatory chat throughout this thread. I understand this website is not necessesarily a microcausim of "life in the Bahama's", but guess what? These sentiments exist EVERYWHERE. It will never stop.
Unless. At the first utterance of a discriminatory remark, the person listening to it must stop it... tactfully if possible, or clearly firm about your unwillingness to listen. The "nudge nudge wink wink... we all know it goes on... I'll tolerate it just this once" has to stop. It's fair to say "Gosh, my experience with some XYZans wasn't good at all." But make the leap from that to "All XYZans" are like that is completely unfair and simply ignorant.
For example, if there are 2000 XYZans, and you had a bad interaction with 1000ans, you can simply NOT make the generalization that ALL XYZans are one way or another. It has to stop... and it starts with the person in the mirror.
So, how will the country's leaders attract more business to diversify an economy largely reliant on tourism if it's too expensive and no affordable housing exists for employees? The corporate incentives could never balance it all off.
Are there any tours I can take of local businesses or public facilities? Are there any career fairs, local festivals or other activities going on during October? What are the better, inexpensive, local eateries? In the US, the general population eats hotdogs, hamburgers, fries, grilled chicken, potato salad, coleslaw, macaroni, popsicles, apple pie. What about the Bahamas?
bahmaboy 08-05-05, - 08:23 PM try johnny canoe, conch fritters, or twin brothers ( i havent eaten there but alot of bahamians like it). for a buffet try waters edge or marketplace.
i hope u enjoy ur trip
shopfy 08-05-05, - 10:02 PM Thanks bahmaboy
dreeve 08-06-05, - 08:09 AM I believe the International Food Fair is during August.
I am an American from Wes Palm who has been living here since November 2001.
Good Bahamian Food, try Oasis, but the service is lousy, or stop by the woman by the airport (set-up across from Budget) for real BAhamian food. Costs approx 6-7 dollars for a meal.
Lorchid39 08-06-05, - 05:20 PM Shopfy, you are going to love it! I visited the Bahamas last July and as you can tell by my being here, I was totally mezmorized by everyone and everything there. I had planned on returning every few months but the hotel where we stayed was destroyed last September. The group I travel with is trying hard to set up a junket elsewhere but so far it hasnt happened. Im waiting patiently.... until April that is.... then I go back one way or another! Have a great time... Im sure you will :)

Glad you enjoyed your trip to our shores! As a matter of curiosity, is there anything that stands out in your mind about your trip here?
By the way, welcome to the site!
Lorchid39 08-07-05, - 08:51 PM Thanks for the welcome to the site. As for my trip, there are so many things that stand out. So many reasons why I want to return, but I guess I would have to say it was the people. From the welcome we got at the hotel to the people on the streets, in the clubs, in the casino.... everyone was so friendly. I met a lot of wonderful people while I was there. I wish that I would of kept in touch with some of them. The next thing was the beauty of your islands. The crystal clear water, the beaches, the banyan trees, even the palm trees as we dont have those in Pittsburgh!
