I think the "perm in your hair" line comes from the fact that while some black women do it for the manageability factor, others do it exclusively for the "white" look. I almost cracked up while I was in the bank the other day when this lady "flipped" her new weave around, just like she was on a shampoo commercial. I mean, she had colored contacts, a pound of makeup, fake breasts and everything! Of course all the guys in the line were drooling, until a white gal walked in and took all the attention. It was classic! One dread joked with his boy, "Man, dat one look fine (referring to the black lady), but at least everyting on dat one real (referring to the white lady). I een gotta pay for no new hairstyle every week!" He then turned to the white lady and said "Sweetie, I know I may look lil rough, but wha you sayin'?" The line was in an uproar.

I felt bad for the black gal, but hey, that's the subconscious message being sent to black men by women with perms and weaves,"You have to have straight hair and a bit of color to pass as attractive." Asians, Indian, Latinos and Causasians all have straight hair to some degree, why do the black gals have to ride their coattails? And another thing I do not get about weaves in particular: If I wore a hat for two weeks straight, 24/7 without getting it wet or taking it off to wash it, people would no doubt call me nasty. Why do some black women do that with weaves? Knocking all the sense outta they head trying to scratch the mixture of sweat and dirty skin built up under it. Ugh!

YB, this was funny and sad at the same time. i was in nassau 2 weeks ago and i saw a lot of black women/girls with this colored contact lens. for what reason i dont know. i personally like black eyes. i think someone should tell this girls green and hazel just doesnt look natural on u.

i have a question for the board why is it that it seems that black women seem to be more up set if a black guy checks a white girl but to me black men dont seem to care that much if a black girl is with a white guy? to me it is just ridiculous

YB. I think the fact that black women in the west have been belittled, distorted, raped, and treated as cattle for so many years, might make one angry when she sees a white woman with what we consider a "GOOD" black man. History has shown that from the middle passage up until only a few years ago, that white men had access to black bodies, doing with our black bodies as they may. A black man could be killed for just looking at a black woman (ex. Emmitt Till). So when we see you with a white woman, automatically a black woman might think that she is not good enough. (HISTORY). Look at the images portrayed of black women, (The Mammy, asexual, or the hypersexual Jezebel). These images have been constructed of the black woman to make her believe that she is substandard, or immoral. So don't feel bad when you walk in with your white woman and get the nasty looks, we're just thinking what does she has that i don't?

Abiskan-Angel, YB and others;
Trust me, I think that our black folk comes in an array of beautiful packages, and I appreaciate all of those packages. By the way I just love this, being able to talk with other Bahamian people. (I'm LOVING this). I'm away form home also. Anyways back to the subject. I spent the Summuer in West Africa, I visited three countries around the region, and was shocked to find that most of the women there had perms. This was my first trip to the mother land, so i expected to see black women in there most natural beauty. NOT! Most of them admired my locks and I was called RASTA woman the whole time i was there. They love Bob Marley. OH, and have never experienced such love from a black man as i did in Africa. They made me feel so beautiful for wearing my natural hair.

I had a perm from i was 9 years old, upon leaving home for university, like most of us i got braids. I remember the first time i took the braids out and washed my hair, (the perm had worn out because if time). I think that the touch of my hair was like love and desire i never felt for myself in my life. I fell in love with the texture and beauty of my hair for the first time. I guess that in the Bahamas, my hair would be considered as what we call "Good hair", and many may not think that their hair is soft or curly enough to wear it natural. But I think that we all need to have experience our hair in its natural state. Then if you want to return to the perm, by all means do so.

i would like to pose this question to everyone; why is it that if a black person decides to get a good education, drives a nice car, lives in a nice pad, dresses well, all with out resorting to illegal activities and speaks like they have some sense they are considered acting white or a sell out?
Your possessions has nothin 2 do with "sell-out" or "actin white"they only evoke emotions like envy and jealousy which in-turn is a very deadly combination,a "sell-out"is persons who's views are one and the same as corrupted governmental officials who practice bigotry, racism and injustice against a people, that people is "Black people and latinos"now the"sell-out"maybe from one or both of the targeted groups by race or ethinicity but he/she dosen't consider themselves as apart of the community or the people,he can't relate,he has no-time 4 community affairs,he is not-proactive,he talks down 2 ppl of his race and embrace and interact only with other races or ethinicities,he's not a "sell-out" he SOLD-OUT!

even though i am still tryin to practice my dont complain thing could be worst stradegy. gas where i live went from 2.35 to 3.09 in like 4 days. each day when i woke up it went up and up. so tomorrow i dont wanna know what it will be.

something has got to be done. you think if everyone stopped buying gas for one day or 3 days the price would drop? cuase what these people doin is holdin us hostage

Maaaan, that ain't nothing. Here in Altanta, some gas stations were charging $6.07 for premium. Its just ri-gotdamn-diculous. Now, you know good and well these gas stations didn't pay that much for the gas the week before.

The Governor ordered, I think last Wednesday, that price-gouging gas stations will be prosecuted for $5,000 per incident and $15,000 for eldery people and gave a number for people to report gas gougers. He said he was ashamed and embarrassed about how Georgian gas stations were taking advantage of the fear and panic of the general public.

The prices have since gone down but they're still pretty high compared to what they were before Katrina. It costs damn near $50 to fill up my 6-cyl Intrepid now whereas when I bought it new in 2000, it cost only $16 to fill my girl up.

To Birkina:

Yes, the racism here is astounding. The Katrina disaster is a perfect example. Why the heck can we immediately send help to another country (tsunami) but in this country, they have to wait FIVE DAYS for help for the very same situation? I'll tell you why; because those people were BLACK AND POOR! We are one of the richest countries in the world but couldn't get help to all those people the next day. Where was the Red Cross, FEMA, Salvation Army? Shoot, even CANADA was prepared come down and help, but the government didn't ask them to.

And that Superdome situation is so frustrating. Little girls and women getting raped, babies dying, people committing suicide, people deficating where they slept. People just lost hope. Looking at the pictures, you would never imagine this being in the U.S. Just goes to show you; heaven forbid if you're Black AND poor in America.

But your boots if it happened in White-azz Connecticut or Massachusetts, help would have arrived the very next day. I want to put my foot in HIS azz everytime I see those people suffering on TV. And how about orders where given to STOP RESCUING PEOPLE AND SHOOT TO KILL LOOTERS? How the heck does stealing Fruit Loops or some damn Nike's take precedence over human life? Because those lives were Black and poor. I am ashamed to be an American on this day.

And you're right about the media. They love to protray Black folks as evil, lazy, or stupid. Everyone over here is talking about the two pictures that were posted lately with White people shown with goods, the caption reading they "found" them; Black folks shown with goods after having "looted" them. The pictures have since been corrected. Too little, too late.

Kayne West straight-up said HE don't like Black people. PREACH, BROTHA, PREACH! It had to be said and I'm glad he said it on a nationally-televised funding-raising program.

Chile, don't get me started about hair. Black folks get on my nerves with this nappy crap. I gets nothing but love and admiration when I visit the Hamas. But the worse comments I've ever heard about my hair have
come from BLACK FOLKS here in the U.S.

Yeah, I'm nappy-headed, too. Not loc'd, but straight-up BIG NAPPY MAJESTY. Been so for about five years. And its not about "fashion," I simply got tired of perming my hair.

And please don't use the excuse that our hair is "unmanagable." Ask yourselves, unmanagable by whose standards? Trust, it takes CONFIDENCE to wear nappy hair. I have the coarsest, steel wool, back-of-a-sheep's-*** texture you ever wanted to see. When I wash it, it shrinks from 8 inches to 2. I have not combed it in so many years, either, because it'll probably break the comb.

When I go to the Bahamas, I get nothing but love and admiration for my hair. Just recently, got off the cruise ship dock and went to the welcome building near the Straw Market. This young sista was in awe of my hair. Gave me the best compliment I ever received. Everywhere I went, sistas giving me compliments and asking about it. Brothas smiling and flirting with me.

At the same time, some Black folks just can't handle it. Yes, I have had some negative responses here in the U.S., ALL FROM BLACK FOLKS! I have nothing against permed sistas nor have I ever tried to adamantly convince a permed sista to go natural, but I didn't realize the extent of our hatred of nappy hair until I went nappy myself.

Black women hate their nappy hair, pure and simple. That's why we spend millions on perms and weaves. In the U.S., we have tons of commercials touting perms but not one showing products specifically for nappy hair. NOT ONE. Hell, we even have perm products for LITTLE GIRLS; I'm taking 3, 4 and 5 years old.

And its not about wanting to be White. I've never heard a Black woman say she wants to be White but as soon as that inch of Mother Africa grows in, we rush to straighten her out again. Truth is, there is an undeniable PRESSURE TO CONFORM TO A STANDARD OF BEAUTY. And guess who that standard of beauty is? This is why some Brothas say they don't want no nappy, beady-head woman on their arm when they have the very same hair texture on their own heads.

I swear, if I could come up with a pill that would make Black womens' hair straight, I'd be a billionaire inside of a week.

LOL at the last line! I DO be seeing sistas beating the crap out of their heads. They don't want to scratch it because they know the WHOLE WEAVE will move if they do! LOL!

About that subconscious message, I believe its the other way around. Hell, a brother on this very thread already said he likes his women permed.

To SheriBeri,
I FEEL YOU GIRL! the situation and the treatment of black folk in America is dispicable. Even in the face of such disaster and heartache, when you all should come together, the media chose to racialise there reports on the hurricane victims. The day after the storm I wathched CNN and saw the tapes of black folks (ONLY) looting a Walmart and a police beating the crap out of a you black man for stealing some electronic equipment. I CRIED. To see how we are treated all over the world is deplorable. Instead of showing these people (looting) where was the national guard and the American government who were suppose to take care of them.

As black folk we have always had a most resilient spirit, and where there's a will we will find a way, so going out and getting food when no one was there to provide it, is just our human nature. WE survived the MIDDLE PASSAGE. Anyways gots to go. BUT MUCH LOVE TO MY BLACK AMERICAN BROTHERS AND SISTERS!

heck yeah i do, i also like their arm pits and legs shaved. oh yeah and none of that woman mustache or chin hairs going on. trust that statement has nothing to do with race or better hair. i guess you can say i have been socialized that way but i like them monica, mya, ciara, aaliyah lookin sisters. in my opinion if a black woman wants to stand off from the crowd why not braid your hair, i think thats sexy.

i also hope u didnt get from that statement if a womans hair was not permed i would totally disregard. not true if she has a bangin body and pretty face she in the door but i would admit the chances would be less.

Bahmaboy, I think that men like you are why we have such a problems with young girls in the Bahamas ruining their skin by bleaching. I'ts a shame that you are not the minority and most Bahamian men share your ideals of beauty.

your words not mine.

and in case you still didnt get it: unmanageable in the most normal sense of the adjective!
