The other day I listened with interest, as our parliamentarians debated the National heroes Bill and the National Honours Bill. Certainly, there is a need to recognise and to celebrate Bahamian heroes, moreso there is always a need to appreciate any person of any origin who has significantly contributed/impacted the development of the Bahamas.

With that being said, I took specific interest in His Excellency, Ambassador Keod Smith's contribution to the House. Unfortunately, I caught the tail end of his speech, nevertheless, from what I had grasp from it, he proported that it is time to retire the statues of Columbus located in front of the Government House and Queen Victoria located down town Rawson's square. Mr. Smith would like for these statues to be replaced by contemporary Bahamians, namely Lynden Pindling and the likes.

Sadly, MP Smith questions the significance of such statues in regards to Bahamian History. Apparently, he thinks that such statues take away from our nationalism. He looks at these monuments as foreign entities, a sore thumb that sticks out on our beautiful hand.

However, I would like to remind Mr. Smith that the Bahamas is made up of stories. Each story be they good or bad are connected. Each story is important and tells the history of us, where we are, where we came from and where we are going. So let Columbus stand, and continue to tell his story of the Bahamas.

And I thought Europeans were the "great offenders" in re-writing history..look like we steady trying to do the same thing.

All this running on about Columbus this and Queen Victoria that, is such an assault on the intellect man. You dont attempt to honour one member of your history by trying to wipe out another part of history..its ALL the history of the Bahamas - the good, bad and ugly.

ALL sectors of history should be acknowledged, studied, KNOWN first and foremost and understood.

Whatever these history deficient guys do with the statue of columbus, they better not replace with the other modern day ''columbus'' in his later political career- Sir Lynden Pindling! I would take Sir Milo over Sir Lynden any day.

Wether we like them or not, they are all part of our history!:biggie:

I don't have a problem with the Columbus statue at all! Regardless of what he did, it is still of historic relevance to the Bahamas! I also wouldn't mind seeing a statue or bust of Sir Lynden! He two, strongly contributed to our nations history and well being!

It would probably be the voice of the people who decides who's image they want in front of Government House! Take a poll!
The majority might say Sir Lynden because Columbus had nothing to do with government! ;)

In saying this, is there anyone that doesn't have a past transgression/s that didn't come to light, who are Bahamian history icons! Everybody lives life, complete with all the up and downs! :friday:

I say that we develop some civilized culture and create a Historic Bahamian Museum, that way all of the icons can be viewed and learnt about (statue or bust), while giving our tourist a great attraction and native lure! (also include Historic Bahamian Moments)

Tru Tru. See what I cant stand with all this political foolishness thats being run on with now is that it perpetuates the "keep the masses ignorant" mentality.

What is the purpose of trying to re-write history? To prove that the history of the Bahamas didnt start until Sir Lynden became PM? Good Lord man the ignorance needs to stop! Wonderful, so these chains of islands have been inhabited all of 30-sumptin years. Thats one for the abysmally stupid record books.

Thats why the average Bahamian is so ignorant right now of even the most basic aspect of their history, because we keep trying to dumb-down the masses to suit political agendas.

Is there.....like ANYONE ELSE that deserve a statue? Maybe Sir Milo should get an upgrade? Perhaps we should venture out the g'damned political arena for once? Culture figures? Infuential private citizens???? What happend to Timothy Gibson and co?

Seiously, Government House wouldn't look like Government house without the statue in my opinion...and I would hate to thing what they would put in its place.

Hell they could put a decorative fountain(s) in Parliament / Rason square.....something representative of national pride and history.....but maybe all the heat exhausted tourists may go wallowing in it...which probably wouldnt be bad.
