NASBWI 08-15-06, - 01:23 PM Are we talking about the Bahamas or the US? In the US the system is set up and managed as a barrier for black Americans....not a conduit to success. The fact that many of us have overcome those barriers doesn’t mean those barriers don’t exist and aren’t effective in keeping the majority of us out.
Barriers like the welfare system, or affirmative action? I could swear that they were more like advantages than barriers (in the US) for black people - at least affirmative action.
Bahamasinmyheart 08-15-06, - 01:41 PM ...and I suppose Dr Martin Luther King Jr was a "token Negro" as well? Or Rosa Parks, maybe? How about Oprah or Maya Angelou? Were they all "tokens", used in some whacked experiment by the government to see if black people really can excel in a "white man's world"? :sarcastic
Dr. King fought and died for equality. Rosa Parks is famous for white peoples insistence she stand or sit in the back of the bus. Maya Angelou was nearly 35 years old before the Civil Rights Act was passed (violently and against the will of many) that finally prohibited discrimination in public facilities, in government, and in employment and abolished and made illegal the segregation of the 'races' in schools, housing, or hiring. Oprah was nearly 10 at that point. So yeah you easily see these peoples success. But you miss their struggle. You miss the culture and society that fought to prevent their success and that continues to deny success to the overwhelming majority.

Are you serious? Are you trying to be funny or are you just misinformed? Welfare is a boon to no one and welfare "benefited" millions and millions of poor white people and much more so than it ever "benefited" black Americans. Affirmative Action likewise "benefits" more than just black Americans. The white American female has benefited under affirmative action more so than any other program in the history of this country. And both of these programs are simply small bandages intended to fix a larger more complex problem to which neither program is truly capable of.
Don’t believe the sound bites that led people to believe these programs were set up to benefit and only did benefit black Americans. Tools to divide the disenfranchised.
Marco Bridgewater 08-15-06, - 03:54 PM A society devoid of such perceptions as “race”, is also devoid of this so-called awkwardness…
This awkwardness may be a result of the subconscious feeling of not belonging or being out of place.
This awkwardness may be due to different social experiences from each represented group/society.
This awkwardness may be a manifestation of one’s own ignorance.
This awkwardness is experienced between persons of the same so called race, of whom dissimilar social backgrounds exist.
This awkwardness is all in your mind…
Is it real, or is it your perception? (Then again, your perception is reality – to you, isn’t it?)

So what if his advisers were white? What's your point? His message was sound, and it was conveyed effectively to the masses. Are you saying that it was wrong then, that his advisers were white? Somehow, that doesn't make sense to me. Black, white, red, yellow, purple, green and mother-of-pearl, if I had a sensible adviser who pointed me in the right direction, then where's the problem?

I won't argue that. Affirmative action was designed for all minorities and women. But that said, it's still available and it puts those minorities in a better position for employment, education, etc. Almost an unfair position, indeed - seeing as in many cases, blacks with less qualifications than some whites are still hired to fill a 'quota' for diversity purposes. My point is, if it's there (whether you agree with it or not), why not take advantage of it instead of placing blame right, left and center?

My Brudda....you are so right! Welfare as managed in the US is a political farce! Affirmative action has some very good points until taken too far."much like redundant and silly EPA mandates"But in itself affirmative action, probably has been the only American public assisitance program to really help motivated, poor black folks."Tool to divde the disenfranchised" is absolutely what welfare has become! FUEL FOR HACK POLITICIANS!

Says who? You? Newt Gingrich? Rush Limbaugh? Thats a broad statement to pronounce without any proof whatsoever. I hear it all the time. Would you find it hard to believe that its not necessary to hire a “less qualified” black American......why? Because there are hundreds of thousands of us who are equally if not more so qualified for the same job. Equally if not more so qualified. Equally if not more so qualified . What you said is just repeating another sound bite often used to fire up the conservative right wingers.... and its not true.
You don’t have to look far to find qualified black people. Just open your eyes.
Black and White are just words. There is no real biological difference between black people and white people (any people). Its simply a social construct we use to define the people as they have been defined in our society. So can you seriously believe its necessary to hire less qualified black people? Why? What would make them less qualified? Affirmative Action was created to bring balance back into play. To help diminish those barriers that have been in place for years and years that were intended to keep black people out. Keep them out not because they are biologically incapable or inferior in anyway. Keep them out because they were socially (racially) deemed as second class citizens. Your assumption that Affirmative Action requires the hiring of “less qualified” black people is a continuation of that unsubtle racist culture that has created the need for LAWS to force the issue.
