trubahamian 08-13-06, - 08:36 AM I do not agree with that assesment at all.
:)
Black America is a typical example of being in the abundance of water, but still thirsty...but only this time, you are no fool.
For the sheer overwhelming knowledge of the cap on US politics, we can argue over the lack of advantage, that Blacks enjoy, and to some extent Hispanics enjoy. Then, we can also discuss, economic advantages, and who are they afforded to.
The issue is alot more complex than merely just, getting up and out. That is a key factor, but you need to be taught how to understand the opportunity made available to you. With the intangibles surounding "dumbing down" of the masses....being a lost soul is the norm.
Use as many words as u like Bey.American inner city Blacks can't get going cuz' politicians doon want them to.No incentive! BTW/How long did u live there to observe dis malady?:yoyo:

Can you provide some specific examples of this? There are quite a few black people from inner city America who have earned coveted scholarships through their hard work to better themselves and make a valuable contribution to society. If your rationale was correct, then there would be no black people from inner city U.S. in that position. So, if one or two black people can do it, why not all of them?

And the problem with that is...? Perhaps if many of those said Americans would drop that chip off their shoulder and get on with it, then maybe - just maybe, they might see that there's actually a light at the end of the seemingly endless tunnel.

OK....fine.First of all my comment is not of the few that have escaped via education and desire to do better,my comment is directed at the masses that stay.To the woman wit 4,5 6,or more kids, wit no man and no education. To men that father these kids and are never fathers to any.To the young men that stand on the corners of every city, drinking from brown paper bags,to the young kids dressed like TV rap gangstas with rude behavior and incessant expletives flowing from their mouths. To the kids that get out of school erry day and neva bring home a book! Don't bait me brudda,I lived in the US too long wit both eyes open not to see the injustices that politicians use to keep these folks #1 right where they are at and #2;keep them complacent, believing they are doing them a favor.:hammer:

Interesting!
Not disagreeing with you guys on most of what is said, but in the case of the Bahamas, from what I have been told and seen I do believe that many of us could make a better life for ourselves if we would only listen to others and take good advice.
Someone said something to the effect that many don't know. I know that Many have been to school here and SHOULD know if they had listened to their teachers who used to bend over backwards and at times teach them for free re the importance of education and making something of themselves, etc.
A perfect example of this is what I used to hear of the late honourable A. F. Adderley, Paul and Francis (the late) Adderley's father -- how he used to go around the town telling the blacks here about the importance of education and encouraging them to educate themselves, make something of themselves. They used to mock him and call him Uncle Tom and other ill names.
So he just got fed up and told them, Ok, I am just going to make sure my two sons get a proper education! And right now today you will find many of the downtrodden here in the Bahamas with that same negative attitude, moping and groping and blaming everything under the sun for their life of squalor and poverty! I doubt people with that attitude can be helped!
licks2 08-15-06, - 12:22 PM I was on a summer deployment in Flint Michagan in 1992 when I went into a bank in down town Flint to open a bank account! The white teller looked into my face and whipered "we don't want your business here"! That's when I noticed that everyone in that bank was white except me and two college mates from Uganda and Korea! Hell, I did't expect to walk into an American bank with only white people! To make sure I got her correct, I said..."what you said"? She repeated herself.
Well, hell! The "over the hill" in me came out! "Look here gal...you ger open this account or I ger stand in ya damn face all live long day"! Boy she looked right back at me and said: "I will call security if you don't move"! She got one big "cut-eye" from me...before she call one big azz security...who walked over with hand on his gun!
By that time I started talking loud! I figured that all them white people in the bank may not take me home for dinner....but them white folks up north een too keen on open discrimination like that "bleached blond" b!tch was puttin down!
When all them other white folk got an idea of what was going down...the security walked back to the door and the woman wanted to open the account! I said: "ta hell with you...I want see the manager"!
When the manager came down stairs, I asked him: " is this bank a member of FDIC"? He said yes! "Then why this fool here telling me I can't open and account here"? "Yes sirree bob...and I am sorry for the inconvience caused...come this way please"! At this point the whole bank was in an uproar! And in order to regain control, the manager took me into his office and he opened the account himself! When he was done he told me..."if you have any more problem of this sort from this bank...feel free to come to this office"!

You're missing my point, though. Yes, there are many who you may feel were left behind. While their situation is unfortunate (and in many cases, tragic), you can't tell me that they had absolutely no control over their own lives, and that somehow the government is to blame for their problems. Take the single mother of 4, 5, and 6 kids. With a lack of education on top of that. Who made her stop going to school? The government? Who told her to go out and allow some guy to get her pregnant when there are many avenues through which she could've prevented it? The government?
Come on now, think about it: the scholars and the hoodlums who came from the same environment had exactly the same opportunities. Why did the rest of them not take advantage of what was lying there in front of them? If we wait for the government to hand us a meal on a silver platter (because of what went on years ago), we'll be waiting (and starving) for the rest of our lives. Stop blaming, and start working. It's not easy, but it's not impossible, either.

Are we talking about the Bahamas or the US? In the US the system is set up and managed as a barrier for black Americans....not a conduit to success. The fact that many of us have overcome those barriers doesn’t mean those barriers don’t exist and aren’t effective in keeping the majority of us out.

...and I suppose Dr Martin Luther King Jr was a "token Negro" as well? Or Rosa Parks, maybe? How about Oprah or Maya Angelou? Were they all "tokens", used in some whacked experiment by the government to see if black people really can excel in a "white man's world"? :sarcastic
