View Full Version : The Bahamas is the 5th HAPPIEST COUNTRY ON EARTH!
lock75 08-09-06, - 12:13 AM I found a reference to the study you are talking about. It had the nation of Vanatu ranked first. Incidentally it seems to have been done by the same foundation.
edit that study is an environmentalist survey that takes into account things such as consumption etc. We are a consumer driven economy so we ended up 75th
You must have looked at the wrong study. Anyway, the link is below and the ranking is the first column under the headline, SWL ranking, The Bahamas is ranked number 5:

de redhead 08-09-06, - 12:21 AM The results of the survey were released at the end of last month

The syudy that I was referring to was the one that Jer mentioned. I did see the study you referenced, I even downloaded the data into an access database.
lock75 08-09-06, - 12:29 AM the urban renewal programme has actually been in play since 1999 as a cooperative with the police force, community foundations, service groups, schools and local government councils, so no single POLITICAL party can really take credit for its launch, although the program expanded significantly in nassau to st. cecelia's and fox hill under mother pratt's watch. the freeport version has been doing well under police inspectors stephen dean and robert higgs, with a significant drop in youth and gang crime. inspector higgs wrote a fascinating master's thesis on battling bahamian gang crime that should be publishing later this year. in the meantime, the out island programmes have been kicking butt since 2000.
again, more news that we could use but will never see. no matter fnm or plp, the papers only want to talk about who knifed who on what corner.
You are so right:hammer:
I do believe one of the reasons for the low morale and contributing factor to social and moral decay is the fact that everytime we open the newspaper, we read about doom and gloom.
While not dismissing that crime etc should be published, it is very important to highlight the good in our society. We should find every opportunity to bring to the fore things that are working in our society; the over-achievers in schools, volunteerism and civic persons, social programmes, community awareness programmes, successful persons etc.
All these things would let all know that although we have a lot of bad, there's more good than bad. I thank God every day for making me Bahamian and wherever I go, I proudly proclaim to all who ask, "I am Bahamian."

lock75 08-09-06, - 12:40 AM I guess its relative...we complain about it ot being adequate enough and illegal immigrants are so happy they have just that...damn you cant win for loosing. c'est la vie.
Actually my friend is Bahamian and his parents have legal status in the Bahamas.
The point I'm trying to make is that everyone is happy to have access to education, for education is a means by which to change one's fate and uplift the downtrodden. I'm not debating the quality of education because I believe reform is needed. However, imagine a Bahamas without basic education. If you think things are bad now, imagine how much worse things would be.
On a conscious and subconscious level, many are grateful and happy to have a means by which to escape this fate.

but you come of so grateful and complacent...as the for instance your toting water to well comment...and now this...our country has the highest GDP per capita income behind the us and canada (of independent countries in the western hemisphere) I dont understand it...why are people IN NASSAU living like that...why are our babies dying...when all of our MP's have chauffer driven vehicles and sissy's MP's have their socials catered and billed to the govt and the PM's wife can take her entourage on a boat show to India...with all this develpment and all this "relative wealth" and prosperity and "transformation"...and with our relatively small population (sans the illegal immigrants)...why?

The project that you are talking about is the one I mentioned earlier. I don't think that accurately relates to people's happiness as it also takes into account things such as environmental protection and consumption. That is why The Bahamas ended up 75th and The UK ended up 108th and The US ended up 150th in the same study you are suggesting is more accurate yet Cuba was 61st and Jamaica was 53rd and Haiti was 85th and The Dominican Republic was 27th. If you think that is more accurate than the study Lock75 quoted then you must think that Haitians in Haiti are happier than Americans.

That is called Democracy and Capitalism, the alternative is Socialism. I guess you and Fred Mitchell must think alike (you always calling him a socialist right).
That was just a joke but seriously I think that we need a healthy compromise.

no that's called taking care of home. our tax dollars een going where they suppose to and this is what you have. the only thing me and fred mitchell have in common is that we believe in education...but even then he feels that after he got his close the door everyone else een good enough for it...that is far from how I feel...

No that is called Capitalism. There would be no need for pumps on the side of the street if everyone could afford to pay for indoor plumbing. If you are suggesting that Government pay for people's plumbing then that is socialistic.
If you are suggesting that Government give all poor people jobs then that is also socialistic. I happen to believe that some of those types of things need to occur but both major parties in this country disagree. With the difference being that at least one believes in some social programs. The other believes in passing legislation that helps the wealthiest among us.

there is no such thing as free...there is a cost for everything ...but what I do believe in govt assistance...give people the opportunity to pay for services make them pay something a month till its all paid off...dont just turn your back on them and their plight like they dont exist..transformation"...prosperity!
