More than 300 Bahamas Electricity Corporation (BEC) employees walked off the job at the Clifton Pier power plant yesterday after talks between the government and the Union broke down. BEC management claim that the "illegal and unwarranted" industrial action resulted in power outages throughout New Providence. "The Bahamas Electrical Workers Union...called an illegal and unwarranted industrial action at which time some members went unauthorised onto the Clifton Pier Power station compound locking the gates behind them," management said in a press statement. "These persons then tampered with the equipment at the Clifton Pier Power Station, which resulted in generators shutting down and led to the power outages throughout New Providence."

Dennis Williams, President of the Bahamas Electrical Workers Union (BEWU) said Union members are not responsible for the power outages. He explained that one of the main disputes is that in May 2003 a 40-hour workweek was made official for BEC employees. However, he said that not until November 2005 it was adhered to. In between that time he noted that Union members were forced to work over 40 hours each week without being compensated – something he believes the government must address.

"I would just advise the government to not try to take the hard road with this, because the workers in BEC are prepared to go the full nine yards. I would advise the government to come with a resolution to this problem, because we cannot continue to be taken for granted," he said. "Everyone else in this country either had their time adjusted to the 40 hour work week, or they've received monetary compensation, but the government is refusing to deal with workers in BEC similarly to other workers in the country employed by other government corporations."

However, the management of BEC claim that the BEWU is demanding $9 million in back pay, "even though there is no legal basis or justification for that demand."

However, Mr Williams said if the problems are not ironed out after a week the members could resort to having a strike vote. In addition, Mr Williams told The Guardian that every worker that is under the BEWU umbrella "from Abaco all the way down to Mayaguana is involved in the industrial action."

I salute the Union leader with my middle finger!

This government better not back down to this worthless fop. He dosen't care if our energy bills increase, nor if the counrty shuts down. Year after year they threaten us with their bull that by now it cannot be a sincere movement by the part of the workers or the union.

If I haerd correctly they want to be paid for a period of time which was never agreed on, which was the period in which the new terms were being negotiated. They want the amount from that agreement to be paid then. That is 100% unreasonable. I suggest BEC do a job fair, go into the communities and train a new inventory of workers (who want to work mind you!), and when its time to move...you have fresh new employees to replace these selfish shmuks.

Pray tell Marichal...
What is the other side?

Personally, I could not give a flying fart about what the truth is. Keep my light on, or be fired!

When we establish that the light and electricity will remain on, then we can reason.
:rip:

Other than that, you can keep your "truth" because this negroe don't wanna hear it!

If debunking means the light will stay on, until all matters are satisfied, then I will debunk away.
:hammer:
Debunking we will go...Debunking we will gooooo...Hi-Ho the cheerie oh, Debunking we will go!
Sung to the tune of "The Farmer in the Dell"
:)

p.s.
Marichal, you make the most intense re-buttal on issues here, with the mere use of just "Saying it ain't so", but when we ask you "Well Marichal, what is so?"...you clam up, and start talking buttholeness!
Worse than that, you go hhhmmmmm....
It is a bit goony as much as it is irritating!
Just between freinds...take no offence!
:)

Usually you are not even worth it. But, for the sake of idiots on line like you, I will delineate what we are talking about.

First, I asked for what Marichal sees as the truth.
Second, We can discuss the truth, once my light stays on....

Did you get it?
Let me repeat...
First, I asked for what Marichal sees as the truth.
Second, We can discuss the truth, once my light stays on....

See....Right there...Did ya see?
;)

To be honest with you, no one has the right to start fudging the facts around here, while people are in darkness.
Garbage talk like that is for the idiots like you who want to get all particular with the wrong ideals.

1. Keep the electricity on.
2. Then we delineate what is going on in terms of your grievance.

I think that is more than fair, when we the Bahamian people pay for the light. To me, you have NO GHAD DAMNED RIGHT to take what we pay for with our own GHAD DAMNED MONEY!
When you do, people tend to shut you off, especially in the climate where the Bahamian people are having zero tolerance to lousy inefficient Government employee's...including Elected officials.
