"The public schools are a disaster, no ifs ands or buts," says world-renowned psychiatrist Dr David Allen. My, My, My and a few months back you were trying to say that the reason why the nation had a D Average was because of the BGCSEs exam...look at this article...out of the babe's mouth
Alien 08-16-06, - 06:53 PM My, My, My and a few months back you were trying to say that the reason why the nation had a D Average was because of the BGCSEs exam...look at this article...out of the babe's mouth
So you gonna take one example, in order to explain a complex issue like this?
What deep thought you put into this!
I never said the BGCSE was at root cause of the National D average, I did say however that it was not measuring true Bahamian talent...and... that the exam was poorly set up and poorly administered. Maybe if it was done correctly, we may have a national average of C consistently. But, what does a standardized score mean anyways. In addition to this, the school system is made up of more than one young man; they also have other young men and young women.
David Allen needs to show us "statistics" about what he explains as the root problem. What he has done is, shifted the blame "where it rightfully belongs" from the system, and puts it on basically ...gansta rap, hip-hop, adolescent behavior and poor parents SOLELY.
Just because Allen brings up one child, and rants on like an old sage, does not make things true. Support that with stats, and opinion polling along with, a true thesis for your argument.
Is he a Dr....or what?
Bottom line.... Yes, social problems are a serious problem and it manifests itself in the education system with the national D average, but the school system is supposed to be the great stop gap.
Capping our kids, and not giving kids a true chance, despite their odds, defeats the purpose of education.
Perhaps Mark should have learned how to fight .. after all a box cutter (or knife) isnt exactly a weapon for self defence ...
BahamaWave 08-16-06, - 06:54 PM er...my title says 'contributing factor', not the only factor.
Tafadhali 08-16-06, - 07:00 PM wow! it seems that these smart kids need a haven for them to go to so that theyc an excel...I went to high school in Miami and believe it or not...this didnt happen...at all! yes we use to skip school and go to three lunches when the teacher gave you a hall pass...but this...they dont have metal detectors at all schools? no wonder people struggling to put they kids through private school...now onder the national average is a D+...we in trouble yall.

exactlt...school is suppose to be a safe haven for learning not a place to protect you from gang violence...that's one reason why Im an advocate for charter schools...some kids need this form of "protection" for learning...I cant believe im saying this...a protection for learning in school!

well is not every kid get D my child took 9 subjects and she pass all 9 of them 3A 4c and 2B, the parent have to put some quality time too, they cannot blame the teachers for everything when most of the moms are going to fish fry every evening to have a drink and spending less time helping their children.

Tell that to Wintergrace...
My thing is, the BGCSE and its failings are not the root cause either, but it sure as hell seals the fate of the kids who do have "other problems".
;)

this is more about security issues...no one is blaming the teachers...he just said that this could be a contributing factor to the D+ average...your child is one out of 1000s in the school system...D= average! average!...if only people would think before they read :sarcastic

my 11 year old son also goes to government school and is an honour roll student, always passing in the top 5 at end of term exams. he has acheived many other special awards and trophies too and recently recieved an award at Government House for having one of the highest GPA's in a goverment school.
yes parents must play a role to ensure their children get good grades. that doesn't mean you have to be smart and do their homework for them, just bond with them, show an interest in their educational developement and encourage them.
sad to say, these new parents these days just don't seem to give a dam.
Alien 08-16-06, - 07:16 PM Ya know what gets me?
Every one who says their kids took the BGCSE or BJC's say that their kids got all good grades....yet...the national average is D.
Some one lying!
Fact is, you will have a percentage who will pass either way, but the people I talk to, their child has gotten them all.
LOL....just want to say that!
Hey...I will admit, I did poorly on those exams...I went on to bigger and much better, so much bigger that, if I tell you what....you would tell me that I am a lying dawg "taffy knows what I mean". I feel I speak for the majority on this, and that, the exam is not a true measure of Bahamian talent. Period.

I didn't say that this was the ONLY factor!!! When we were having this discussion a few months back, I did brought your your attention other contributing factors...such as this very one....but you were not hearing that, you refuted all my examples and you continously blamed the government at the time for the D average....don't switch ya mouth nah...:D
