I agree with you 100%, persons should be held accountable for this gross incompetence. Unfortunately, as is often the case, nothing will happen; the police hierarchy won't answer phones calls from journalists, the prison hierarchy will say, well it's not our fault if the guy wasn't properly processed which would have revealed his true identity, and the Ministry of Nat'l Security...well that rudderless ship don't even know what happened. They probably found out about it the same way we did, by reading it in the papers. Only through personal accountability can we eradicate incompetence. If "heads roll" on this, officers would be more careful in how they process criminals in the future. canewry 08-22-06, - 06:14 AM 19th August Prison Officials Unaware Escaped Prisoner Back By Quincy Parker Escaped prisoner Adlet Cilice has been behind bars at Her Majesty’s Prison for over a week after a month on the loose, but prison officials had been unaware of his presence on the compound until Friday morning. That is because when police arrested Cilice on Arawak Cay over a week ago, he gave the arresting officers an alias. When Cilice was arrested, he identified himself to police as "Mike Miller:" he was tried, pleaded guilty and given a one-month sentence under that name. Cilice was jailed in a different part of the prison, and only on Friday morning did prison officials recognize him. Up to Thursday, Prison Superintendent Dr. Elliston Rahming had been under the impression that Cilice was still on the loose. Prison officials say that it was only after it was brought to the attention of senior prison officers that the prison’s Internal Affairs unit went to question the new inmate known as "Mike Miller" and discovered his true identity. It appears that the police failed to fingerprint the man they arrested as "Mike Miller" – the Journal has learnt that Cilice’s fingerprints are on file, and had the police fingerprinted "Mike Miller," Cilice’s identity would have shown up. Police officials had no additional information, as Chief Superintendent Hulan Hanna referred the Journal to Prison Superintendent Dr. Elliston Rahming for details on how Cilice was recaptured. Assistant Commissioner of Police with responsibility for Crime Reginald Ferguson had not returned phone calls by press time. Cilice, 21, a Haitian-Bahamian, was a medium security inmate at the institution when he vanished from a work-gang at the prison chaplain’s residence in the Yamacraw neighbourhood. None of the prison guards saw when Cilice disappeared, and his absence was only noted after a head count was performed. He had been serving a three-year prison sentence for fraud, after having been sentenced in Grand Bahama. That island was Cilice’s last known address before he was jailed, and when he escaped a month ago police were concerned that he may have gone to Grand Bahama. Cilice was originally set to be released in October 2007, but National Security Permanent Secretary Mark Wilson pointed out that escaping from prison is against the law. How much time is likely to be added to Cilice’s sentence as a result of his escape from prison, and subsequent re-arrest for a different matter, is up to the courts, Mr. Wilson said. canewry 08-22-06, - 06:17 AM Please inform me how you can tell a haitian-bahamian? perhaps by asking him... simply hey Mike you sure you aint that escape prisoner..... pharoah 08-22-06, - 06:44 AM perhaps by asking him... simply hey Mike you sure you aint that escape prisoner..... Easier said than done. You dont want to make the mistake od asking a ''real Bahamian'' whether he is haitian or not. The mentality that most Bahamian have to our haitians brothers and sisters is a form of self hate. Asker beware!! Lol. Tafadhali 08-22-06, - 10:27 AM Easier said than done. Asker beware!! Lol. you are too funny...but I wouldnt be offended if someone asked me if I was Haitian...why should I be? I know who I am..this is my country...I trace my roots back here on both sides to many islands...so naturally I do have a prejudice with new comers...why would you call it self-hate? Not that Im agreeing with the attitudes, but I can understand why they persist...the sheer numbers alone, the shanty towns, the burden of our resources, the blantant disrespect of our laws...nothing being done by govt (and when there was a ray of light in "house on a lake" gibson...political interference due to pandering to the Haitian-Bahamian votes got in the way- enabling lawlessness if I do say so myself.) and please believe...it will get worse...sad to say... pharoah 08-22-06, - 11:33 AM you are too funny...but I wouldnt be offended if someone asked me if I was Haitian...why should I be? I admire you and your outlook on life but the truth of the matter is that to be label a haitian, many bahamians finds it offensive. It is self hate because haitians are our brothers and sisters from a common ancestry. To many Bahamians to be call a Haitian is fighting words...that is the whole sickening truth!!! I make no apology for that. If the cap fit wear it. I know who I am..this is my country...I trace my roots back here on both sides to many islands...so naturally I do have a prejudice with new comers...why would you call it self-hate? Believe me I dont have any problem with enforcing the laws of the Bahamas. As long as it is fair and equitable. By fair and equitable i mean as long as it applies to ''All'' illegals in the Bahamas. biggetybill 08-29-06, - 11:15 PM somebdoy needs to be fired! the lazy arresting officer...the lazy booking officer...surely someone shouldve been able to tell that he was of foreign extraction...were Bahamian we know our people...even the white ones! ... and him..I blame him for being stupid! but 3 years for fraud...that's a long time when murderers and drup scum get less time...its like they just give out sentences without thinking about them...and he's young 21! he shouldnt be in prison...so sad! I know of Haitians who speak english more clear than some Bahamians, and look more like bahamians too...so to say that some one is able to identofy that a person is of foreign extraction, just by name, looks or the way the speak is an under statement.... also if his finger prints is not a part of a data base,,,you can finger print him untiil his hands wrinkle ...you won.t come up with nothing ..... with that part I can agree with you that the cops were lazy in putting the information in what they call AFIS...automatic finger printing identification system... |
