Road Traffic controller Jack Thompson appeared today on Immediate Response with Steve Mckinney to discuss the prefered model of a unified bus system. He also denied allegations from PTAB presidence Mr. Rahming that their was no consultation with the bus drivers/franchise holders (stakeholders) on the proposal. (sad if its true)

I had a copy of this proposal for a few months now, has anyone else seen it? If so what are your views on the propsed revamping of the bus system.

For those who havent seen it, what are your views/suggestions for a unified bus system.

Its long overdue. May in fact help to alleviate the heavy traffic congestion in New Providence, as supposed to widening and adding more roads. The real question is whether one can be set up properly at this point.

Jack is one guy who has been doing a smash job. He may have been a political appointee, but he has worked out pretty..."ok".

Just want to see Blue Hill Rd. finished for crying out loud. I see what they are doing, but for heavens sake it is taking too long.

its taking long due to unforseen ground conditions (sinkholes and cavities) also because of utility congestion

It's long overdue. On a small island like NP, having a car should be a want, not a necessity. Try working at a hotel or doing any night job and not have a car. Man, you have to wait long after you knock off to hike a ride with someone going your way and some people so mean, even if they're going your way, they don't want give you a ride in their "nice" car.

Then you have the taxis, if one is fortunate enough to be able to afford the cab fare (which is ridiculous), the taxi drivers don't want to take ya because they discriminate against Bahamians, especially if you goin "ova da hill" (this I know well from personal experiences).

I hope that they unify the system fast, introduce scheduled bus services, extend bus operating hours, introduce a fleet of eco-friendly buses, and get rid of the old, black smoke belchers we have now.

I serously doubt that the franchise holders were not consulted. This proposal is nothing new, it was being thrown around from since the FNM was in power. If we can access the proposal online, I'm sure it was made available to the bus owners and their input would have been requested.

The thing is, you have some people who don't like change. The bus owners directly own and control everything that goes on with their buses, some people don't know how to relinquish control and would do everything in their power to fight change. Even if it's for the greater good.

A year ago, I heard a bus owner, when asked what did he think about the proposed unification, say that he and the majority of the owners were in favour, but there was a vocal minority who were putting up a fierce resistance to any change to the status quo. If he could be in favour of something that directly affected his business, wouldn't it stand to reason that he and others were consulted? And this I heard a year ago!
