The new information about stem cell research is about the "possibility" of conducting stem cell research without destroying the embryo. THAT in itself, leads you to examining the embryo itself, and you would almost certainly destroy one or two in the process.
Where the debate is at now, and where I hope it will never move past is, that the embryo's signify human life, and we should not endorse tampering with it under any circumstance.
