View Full Version : Inclusion for children with Disabilities
Ad-Vo-Cate 08-26-06, - 03:39 PM When will we as a nation recognised that as citizens of this country every child is entitled to a free education whether they are "abled" or "dis-abled".
So if there are no public schools that will take dis-abled children ,govt.should pay the school fees for them if a private school takes them in!

I don't know of any schools in this country that are completely designed to accomodate the disabled. It is time they were, at least to the extent that children can be independent and are able to focus on their studies and not on how they will get down three flights of stairs in their wheel chair.

I know a private school that pays attention to the disable, there was a student in a wheelchair and the school build an elevator and ramps for the person to access the lower and top levels of the school.

That is commendable and a good start, unfortunately very few schools have the funds to follow suit. Perhaps a good project may be for the Government to transform 5 schools each year until they are all done and provide assistance to private schools that need to make their own changes.

well, speaking from the out islands, there's exceptional education outreach in briland and eleuthera, and lyn major's every child counts group in abaco, all focused on working with kids with limited learning skills, whether naturally slow or hard of hearing or dyslexic, that work in tandem with the public school system. both commendable public/private sector operations ... and the school's arts and crafts programs work to build ramps to make sure that all areas of the school are readily accessible with a wheelchair.

I won't hold my breathe, remember the government can't find money to build enough classrooms, it seems like this September students will be in trailers

Kidding right, these buggers can't get the school repaired in time for the term opening and you want them to do what. Another topic is why do we let these kids destroy the school so, that so much repair is needed.
gullyrock 08-26-06, - 10:50 PM Big bad Brad and Alfred signed a BIG contract in Abaco this week for the "renewal, rebuiilding and modernazition" of the school in Sandy Point. (school starts for teachers on Monday!) According to the mouth (BBBrad) they have taken on the mammoth task of bringing all schools up to state of the art level!! Whats the point of a state of the art building if there are not enough teachers to properly staff these schools? And do they plan on sending sufficient supplies and equipment for the teachers and students? BIG SHOW... Some Abaco schools were not able to have school on the campus all last school year! And now they're tearing up a few more. Take a close look at what they are really doing to some of the schools and ask yourself if it was at all necessary and exactly how it will help the children get a better education!
chancellor 08-27-06, - 12:49 AM I pray that the government define just what is "state of the art". Until then they should be banned from using the phrase. They make it sound like there will be LCD screens in the cafeteria and tablet computers on every desk or something. I would like to know how is a new wooden structure "state of the art"?
chancellor 08-27-06, - 01:14 AM Also, shame on the architects who dont even try to sneak in those ramps!

Sneak in ramps? In one of the soon to be "state of the art" schools, they have closed up the interior doors that led from from one classroom to the other. This building is used for a hurricane shelter. In a hurricane the people slept in one room, "lived" in the other and was able to walk thru to the bathrooms and the other areas...no jamming up! now they got to go out in the hurricane to wee-wee!! Great thinking!
State of the art? State of the art BUILDINGs cannot give quality education. They need teachers. These schools are understafffed and grades are combined! Not conducive to learning! They will build these buildings and thats the end of the story! Think they will send any supplies? Computers, copiers? They don't even supply ink for copiers, printers! Any art supplies? Any paper? Any sports equipment? I hope everyone realizes that this is basically an election ploy, so when they on the campaign trail they can say.."look at that nice modern school building WE GAVE YOU!!" and the masses will shout,,"das right, Hubert een do nothin' for us.." All da way!!! I will be impressed when they do something to truly benefit the children. Wasting classrooms to create cushy offices and staff rooms don't impress me! As far as including challenged kids in the system, they can't seem to do what they're already doing properly! I really feel for the teachers in these understaffed schools!
gullyrock 08-27-06, - 09:49 AM OOPS! I een trying to defend Hubert dem either..don't bother to go there on me! Just thinking ahead to to da rally!
