Ting-um 08-30-06, - 02:48 PM I don't care.
Basically, its everybody's fault.
From the idiots that lived there to the mayor to the governor to the president.
dont forget the french ..
Tafadhali 08-30-06, - 03:13 PM I saw this last night too.
Not to sound cold-hearted -- but, so what??
The Bahamas is made up of a bunch of islands. When we get hit where are we gonna run?? Nowhere. When we get flooded out where do we run?? Nowhere.
Americans live with no humility. No fear of God. No fear of nature. That means no respect for anything, even for their own safety. So first, I blame the people that stayed. And don't tell me that poor people can't leave. Haitians and Cubans *WAAAAAYYYYYYY* poorer than anybody in New Orleans. But I bet you they float to Miami on some cardboard. That's because they know fear. They know humility. They know distress.
Then they complained that they were treated like slaves and shipped off all over the US. My God!!!! You were just living in the Super Dome with heaps of dead bodies, feces everywhere, no sleep, no food, no water -- now you complaining that you have to live in a hotel for two months and not pay anything?? As long as my family was safe and alive I wouldn't care. Any place was better than New Orleans.
Now people say that there's some conspiracy to get the poor black people out.
The word is re-gentrification.
It works *EVERYTIME*
It worked in Chicago. It worked in Atlanta.
Anytime people want to improve the value of land -- here comes the ever effective re-gentrification scheme. Without having to kill people.
Besides, New Orleans is below sea level and surrounded by swamp. They'd have to spend trillions of dollars just to get it back to where it was, not to mention trying to make it better.
Basically, its everybody's fault.

you are quite cold and callous young man...where the hell is your humanity! re-gentrification is wrong and its happening everywhere...even in our Bahamas whether you want to believe it or not. and you have to the nerve and audacity to call these proud citizens of the nola idiots...who the hell are you to make such proposterous and outlandish statements...to fix that levee and do it right wouldnt cost trillions...look at the dutch and what engineering does to keep them buoyant and 65% of their country is below sea level...and you talk about new orleans beign surrounded by wetlands and below sea level...what they need to do is restore the wetland..mother nature will protect the people...just like how the mangroves and the barrier islands protect nassau and other parts of the our country from tidal surges in hurricanes...its all inter-related. do you even have or understand any historical context? did you think for a second that the same reason that those people didnt leave is the same reason some people in the Bahamas can tell if the hurricane winds will be fierce or not...and you say they live with no fear of nature...those people were not expecting the levees to be bombed...who was..those people were not expecting the govt to take five days to come to their rescue...those people were not expecting their familes to be disbursed like slaves separated from their families all over the place...and some of those same so-called "idiots" lost their homes that they out-right owned and still are displaced from their families...
a govt is suppose to be there for a citizens when they cant be there for themselves...in a democracy that is what you pay taxes for and like you stated...all levels of govt failed its people...its poor people no less.
all those cubans and haitians who leave their homeland leave paying their way out...from money provided by family members who live in the us or on our country...please believe that...
homey you seriously need to check yourself.

Tafadhali 08-30-06, - 04:03 PM Nah, I'm checked.
I've been to New Orleans several times. Driving from Baton Rouge to New Orleans when the rains were heavy and you can barely see to drive. Or they close off the bridge because it was flooded. There are several studies done -- *EVERY* one knew what would happen to New Orleans if a category 3 hurricane happened. Go watch the documentary again. They all said the same thing. That they've left before and nothing happened so they preferred taking a chance and staying. They all said that they were warned about a *MANDATORY* evacuation. Which means its against the law to stay.
They all knew and decided to tempt fate and risk their own lives.
Sure, re-gentrification is happening everywhere -- which is why its stupid to believe that people would prefer flooding and adding expenses when they could buy land that's already cheap. I'd love to see how they plan on getting people to move to New Orleans. I don't care how much money you spend -- it will not happen.
Stop saying that they bombed the levee.
I didn't say it would cost trillions to fix the levees. I said it would cost trillions to fix New Orleans after flooding it. If you assert that the flooding was intentional in order for rich people to make money -- then you would have to prove that it was cost effective to do so. And flooding a city, then spending most of the munipal budget to help the people, spending more money to rebuild the city back to its original state, then even more more to make it safe enough to induce people to return, then even more money holding property for years and years while interest rates crash.
The idea is simply retarded. Now if you want to say americans are retarded. Fine. Agreed.
How do you compare the Netherlands to New Orleans?? Seriously, think about the last time the Netherlands was under a hurricane watch.
I'll give you some time to think about that one.
I understand history perfectly. I remember walking to school in 2 feet of water when hurricane David hit back in the 70s. I've lived thru dozens of hurricanes. From living in Nassau to living in South Florida. The destruction in the Bahamas never ever looked like any of the destruction in America. Even the towns that are miles inland which lots of protection were destroyed.
I have friends in New Orleans. I live in Arkansas. When they brought thousands of people to our town I brought food and clothes. Even books to the students from Tulane. There was a guy in my Advanced Finance class named Clarence -- spent two weeks in our spare bedroom.
I *KNOW* these people. I met them. I ate with them. I've been to New Orleans before and after Katrina. Don't tell me what I know.
I'm not speaking just to be cold or to hear myself speak. I'm speaking from what I've seen with my eyes rather than what I seen on TV or heard in the news. All of that is biased. If you want the truth, go there yourself. I can give you the names, addresses and phone numbers of friends of mine in Ninth Ward or anywhere in Nola, if you'd like.
But if you want to go ahead and make excuses for people just because they are black...go ahead...
You are doing them a disservice.
You need to check yourself.
By the way, you said the government is supposed to be there for its people otherwise why pay taxes. Then you call them poor. If they are below the poverty line -- classifying them as poor -- then they don't pay taxes. So by you logic does that mean that they shouldn't have gotten any help at all??
dont tell me what I know...for that matter, dont tell us what you think we dont know either
I dont have to watch the documentary again (but I will)...Ive seen the Time-Picauyne article from a year before...even been to the LSU site...heard the audio of those same folks testifying before congress...you say it like your the only one whose ever been to new orleans...ever had friends or have friends or loved ones from there...I presently know a Bahamian in New Orleans right now and were going to see him before the new year...my fiance's brother is even there working! you say it like you assume this is the first time weve discussed this on this forum...please...
Im not making excuse for anyone...I said poor people...white, hispanic and asian people were up in that mix too...and they too pay their local state and federal taxes and contribute to their economies...and the levees were bombed I dont care what you say. the hurricane was over...the people came back...then the levees gave way...that mandatory argument is thrown out the evidence file...so what do you say to that? and even if we were ti leave it up to those in the superdome squalaor to get out themselves...where were they gonna go with all that water surrounding them...were they gonna drive out...paddle out...or get a raft just like the cubans and haitians...hah?
you speak about the netherlands...well why have all this sophisticated engineering unless their werent fearful of what could happen...why? if no one speaks up for these displaced people, and the unscrupulous eyeing snakes and charlatans are allowed to have their way...youll see how new orleans will turn out...and you talk about who is funding all this...most if not all of it is on the the federal govt (Americans yet to be born)...the levee was their responsibility...and most of it will be paid through fema...and its awarding of contracts to connected partisan supporters...how can the municipal govt pay for this when the city isnt even functioning and when they damn near dont even have the funds! municipal budget rright!
By the way, you said the government is supposed to be there for its people otherwise why pay taxes. Then you call them poor. If they are below the poverty line -- classifying them as poor -- then they don't pay taxes. So by you logic does that mean that they shouldn't have gotten any help at all??
And no I didnt say that
I said
a govt is suppose to be there for a citizens when they cant be there for themselves...in a democracy that is what you pay taxes for and like you stated...all levels of govt failed its people...its poor people no less.
…that is your govt working for you…because you’ve contributed your taxes over the years. Be it your below the pverty line, working poor, welfare recipient…you pay some kind of tax..property tax…sales tax…income tax…something you pay.
a little closer to home…poor people fund most our govt(through those shopping trips to miami)...rich people get out of paying most of their taxes...our services are not taxed in the Bahamas(lawyers, etc)...why you think the rich keep getting rich and the same kind of people are in power ensuring that status quo persist?...they can afford to pay duty and customs because their businesses arent being taxed as they should. poor people bear the brunt of it. check yourself homey.
I will go and I will see...your eyes dont speak for many other people who dont have a hang up about their race and being a mentally enslaved self-loathing black man in the Americas who is doing himself a disservice.
Ting-um 08-30-06, - 05:18 PM The fact that you have to turn this into the same tired personal attack against me speaks volumes.
...and the levees were bombed I dont care what you say
What kinda argument is that?? The levees were bombed just because you say so. Why even bother trying to talk with you. Everything you say is right with no logic, no proof, no nothing. The levees broke. I hate myself. I'm self-loathing. You have no proof of what you say but I'm supposed to take it based on nothing other than your overblown pride and ego??
Please. Get real.
I seriously have better things to do. So I'll leave you in your fantasy world. Where you're always right and the people that don't agree with you are self-loathing and ignorant.
If you wanna spend your life pretending to be the victimized, then enjoy it. If you want to discuss atrocities on the poor then fine. We can discuss Somalia, Darfur, Kurdistan, India, South America and South Africa. But if you wanna keep crying about how Americans who have the world handed to them are worth crying about then I'll prefer to stay out of it. In my eyes, there are no victims. There are victims in Africa, South America, India, and the Caribbean. And their distress doesn't come close to comparing New Orleans. Which is why I don't and will never care about the so-called plight of black people in America.
I'll leave that for you.
If you think they suffer injustice. The real injustice is the fact that you don't foam at the mouth with the same fervor at the suffering of people living in conditions 100 times worst than anything New Orleans ever saw. The injustice is that you even believe poor people living in America are actually poor and deserve your attention and pity. I don't.
You'll never get me to shed a tear for that.
Tafadhali 08-30-06, - 05:24 PM The fact that you have to turn this into the same tired personal attack against me speaks volumes.
That's all I have to say.
that's all you got from my post...c'est la vie!
that's not a personal attack its the truth...and seeing that most of your jaded perception eminates from your hang-ups what else could you expect...
carry on smartly.
"The levees were bombed" - man people believe anything these days ..
Tafadhali 08-30-06, - 05:32 PM "The levees were bombed" - man people believe anything these days ..
