View Full Version : "Proposed" National Health Plan in 2012 by Dr. Sidney Sweeting
adidasboi987 09-17-06, - 01:34 PM THE BAHAMIAN PEOPLE SAY NO!!!!!!!
THE P.L.P was quick to tell the Bahamian people to vote "NO" for the referendum, If ever a time we need a referendum, it is on this issue. This is serious business when the government will force me to pay for something I do not want, and in the long run will not be beneficial to me, the public purse, and private physicians.
If you ask me the P.L.P is HEADING DOWN THE SAME ROAD AS THE F.N.M PRIOR TO 2002, it seems as if the P.L.P has not learnt from the F.N.M mistakes. The Bahamian electorate will no longer stand by and allow the government to shove anything down it's throat.
If Perry and his Cabinet knows what is good for them, they will put that bill with the rest, underneath the large stack that they have not gotten around to yet, put it right under the draft that was suppose to provide for the mandatory evacuation during emergencies

You sound serious!
LOL....
Remember the refferendum?...We all know what people voted for!
Voted no to the FNM!
:D
12play 11-16-06, - 12:56 PM why the government so hell bent on this national health insurance thing? Why not just amend the national health insurace act to do some of the things that they want to do? Two hundred and fifty million dollars a year? We could use that money to educate people, build schools, hospitals, boats for the defense force.... and they tryin' to do this before an election when ratioanl people start to act up? Have they learned nothing from the referendum fiasco?
Vicky 11-16-06, - 02:11 PM The canada health system is broken. They are trying to change things now-more of a two level system. Private clinics opening up. People cant find family doctors, long wait times. Please get real.
Yes The Canadian health plan has its drawbacks but it saves lives not just the lives of those that have money. But the bum on the street can have a triple by pass just as the millionaire can and the quality of care will be no different. Yes non life threating problems take a bit longer.
If it were not for Canada's health care system my Mom would have been dead long ago.
Mad Les 11-16-06, - 02:32 PM wow, what a great debate ..
I live in the Uk, we have a 'free' health system...or do we??
National Insurance includes health care and is about about 13% on top of income tax at 40%...No such thing as free!!!
The system is a con..lets see, the govt charges everyone, it then spends all the money looking after us and our medical needs...does it hell...it gives a second rate service, cutting costs wherever possible, shutting hospitals, wards and departments..making doctors and nurses redundant. Then pockets the difference...trust me you are better off with a private medical system that gives top rate service. The doctors and support staff here are fantastic, its the system that lets them down.
I live near Gatwick airport, a major hospital in this area is the Princess Royal, the trauma dept was shut last year which means any accident victims have an extra 30min journey to hospital. The plan is this year another unit will shut, to save money. Yet do I get a refund on my payments NO!! Cleaning is so bad in hospitals, (because its done on the cheap), that hundreds die each year from MRSA, the only safe thing to do is pay for decent private care.. But of course you dont get a refund so the govt keeps all the money..
I work in the fire service, how do you think I feel when my lads work their hearts out to get someone out of a wreck only to see them die because the local hospital ward is shut. To see men in tears because a 4 year old girl died in our arms because the nearest ambulance was 35 mins away..
My wife had a problem, she was seen by a doctor the next day via private insurance through her company..I had a problem, waited a year to be operated on via the NHS (National Health Service).
I could go on and on but I dont think my blood pressure will take it..
We intend to move to the Bahamas soon, with the great people, great weather (most of the time) and a good health plan.. Just dont let these people empire build for their own ends at your expense.

Well here you can wait for an ambulance for over an hour, only to get to a hospital where half the equipment isnt working or there arent any doctors on duty .. plus we pay tons of tax too and get nothing to show for it.
12play 11-16-06, - 02:56 PM But the bum on the street can have a triple by pass just as the millionaire can and the quality of care will be no different.
why would anyone want to keep a bum alive past his due date, or someone who has achieved his three score and ten for that matter? Only their loved ones, so let them have a cookput to pay for it if they doh have the money..what is wrong with having cookouts anywho? I enjoy them actually.Cookouts are a part of our culture...they can be tourists' attractions even. When your time comes, go quitely..allyuh carn wait to see geesus right?
Vicky 11-16-06, - 03:11 PM NO CHOICES!!!!!!!!!! as it stands that is how it is if you are poor.
LOUSY SERVICE Only if you feel your broken arm is more important than someones mother dying of a heart attack. We do need more Drs.
NO MEDICATION you can get any meds you need if you are willing to pay for it.
LONG LINES.............................................. because we need more Drs.
BROKEN DOWN EQUIPMENT Because the government officials can go to other countries. So it does not effect their health needs
NO PATIENT CONFIDENTIALITY Recordes in public and private hospintals go through many hands.
NO SPECIALIST again need more Drs.
SLIM CHANCE FOR SECOND OPINION need more Drs.
NO RIGHTS TO ELECTIVE PROCEDURES there are none now unless you are willing to pay.
NO RIGHT TO CHOOSE MY PHYSICIAN That is out right wrong but many private heath ins have a list of Drs to chooes from as well. I am sure you can see any Dr you like if you are willing to pay.
COMPULSORY WAGE DEDUCTION Its the only way it can work for all citizens of the Bahamas.
ME PAYING FOR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS this does not happen even in Canada. I am born Canadian and can't use the system in Canada as I have not lived there for 8momths (I think) out of the year.
10YRS FROM NOW A BROKE N.H.I Not if it is mannaged right
DYING WHILE WAITING IN LINE I have my doubts about that but again we need more Drs.
DELAYED AMBULANCE SERVICE Everytime I have called they have gotten here pretty quick except once when we called they they told me all ambulances were out responding to a big accident.
NO BEDS AVAILABLE We have that now the heath plan could free some of that up as people will be better able to affored visits to the Drs before they get so bad off that they have to be hospitialized.
adidasboi987 11-16-06, - 03:17 PM The problem doesnt lie in lack of doctors cause i think if you ask me we have too much of them..i however believe that lack of equipment and more imprtantly lack of adequate trainig for all the doctors is the root of the problem. Medicine is an ever changing field just like technology. The doctors must remain current in their field and keep up with new techniques and procedures, which i feel is not done (enough) here.
Bahamasinmyheart 11-16-06, - 04:51 PM But arent national health plans cheaper in the long run because they promote a healthier population?
While its true that if you bleeding or broken up and you go to the emergency the hospitals have to treat you. But that way ends up costing the nation a fortune. A national health plan makes routine medical ..i.e. preventative care available to everyone. its cheaper to treat your high blood pressure and and cholesterol than it is to treat a heart attack or stroke victim.
Seeing your doctor on a regular basis and staying healthy is cheaper than not seeing your doctor at all and waiting till the hospitals are forced to treat you for a sickness that could have been prevented.
I think a national health plan is a good thing that will help the people of the Bahamas. And it will be cheaper in the long run.....
...trust me you are better off with a private medical system that gives top rate service.
You are only better off with a private healthcare system if you can afford to pay for the doctors. Your average person cannot. If you can afford to pay privately for a doctor now....then you will still be able to pay privately for a doctor then..... this system is for the vast majority of our people who cannot afford to pay a doctor privately for the routine health maintenance that everyone should have access too. My god people what about the children!!!!!!!
(Shameless pull at the heartstrings.....) but seriously.... Poverty aint no joke in the Bahamas....national health plan will go a long way.
WinterGrace 11-16-06, - 05:07 PM Vote them out!

Good show old boy! However, politics runs deep down here! Some of us have been trying to say the very same things you are...one who lived the madness!
But, we will continue down that road of our political stupidity! Each party tend to keep their "big punch" as the carrying issues in order to win the election! It's all for the vote old chap...all about the votes!!:shhh:
Hey! Let us know when you get down here. You earned a few "pints" for your contribution!:cutie:
