And old song comes to mind:
"If ya old enough to do dis to me Nelly
Ya old enough to marry she.
Now son, don't try to run
Cause I'n gon' miss with this...shotgun."
And it has a point. Basically, it takes two to tango. It's not just the girl getting pregnant (unless there's some kind of devine intervention a la Virgin Mary); the guy had to plant his seed, correct?
The problem in society today is that more than just prevention, people aren't placing enough emphasis on how serious sex is, in general. Now, maybe it's because so many of us have accepted different circumstances under which sex is appropriate (marriage, two people in love, committed relationship, yadda yadda). All that, however, does not a family make. These days, it appears that sex is viewed more or less as a pastime, and not what it really should be: a consummation of a relationship, resulting (hopefully) in a family.
In the case of these young girls, I don't think that the parents should be held responsible for raising the children. The girl and her mate should be. And not with some feel-good "oh, wouldn't it be nice" scenario. They made their bed, and now they must sleep in it. Maybe that'll drive home the point that sex isn't a game, or a hobby. So when they're raising their unplanned children, they can teach them a little better (from experience) that sex can definitely wait until they are READY to raise a child.
I don't mean to sound harsh, and I know there are certain circumstances that would require sensitivity (rape, incest, etc). But I'm sure that allll those teen pregnancies aren't the result of rape or incest, and to those couples (who, by that time, should know right from wrong), I'd show little (if any) sympathy. Tough love is the name of this game. :hammer:
