Ting-um 09-06-06, - 06:28 PM Dont yall know. These arguments are really not going to matter in the end.
Homosexual marriages are coming. They are coming here....they are coming there .... they are coming everywhere.....sooner or later. I dont mean that is a frightening prospect... only as a fact. Why. Because to put it quite simply ... it is the right thing to do. Legitimizing bigotry will only last so long. Eventually the bigots will be overcome. It really is that simple.
Same thing happened to the racist, and the sexists, and the segregationist.......etc. Patience i do have. and hate is a battle that bigots will always ultimately lose at....eventually.
Bet on it.
I am just as pessimistic as you are.
But there are people thinking that the world will come to an end soon, some aren't afraid of speading up that process. That's another fact that I'm haunted by.
But, that certainly doesn't mean that I'm going to try to convince those people otherwise. I'd rather enjoy normal life if only for a second longer.
Vicky 09-06-06, - 06:30 PM Prove it.
The institution of marriage has been on a downward spiral for years -- explain how homosexual marriage will add to it -- unless you mean that it'll push the institution further down.
Very simple you will have more people getting married. The downward spiral of marriage is not the GLBT community's fault. It’s a heterosexual issue as GLBT have been excluded from marriage for some time now.
Also many GLBT couples have been together for a life time. Even with society against them they have relationships that endure the test of time more so than most heterosexual couples.

so if me and my boyfriend of 4 years was to get married tomorrow. Your "normal" life would be affected how?
You know Mikki, your a smart guy.... not so long ago people were using these very same arguments to prevent black people from intermarrying with white people. Some people still argue that. Im surprised you dont arent able to connect the dots. You seem very well read....and its been my experience that bigotry and homophobia lessen dramatically with education and IQ (not an attack people......)
So im a bit surprised you dont see the comparisons to your own "lifestyle" as some people would put it.
Bahamasinmyheart 09-06-06, - 06:48 PM Just to remind you.

...or maybe someone personal religion has no place in another persons personal life.
See how quickly the religious sword can be pointed in your direction.
(also my last double thread post :p )

It won't matter to me because you can't get married. The only way you could get married is if it became legal. In which case, the majority of people would vote the liberal representative out of office for someone more conservative and militant to ensure that you never get married. The same militant conservative may not want to stop there.
And actually, the arguments are not similar. People are drawing comparisons where there are none. "Blackness" is a false identity forced on a group of people to make it easier and more justifiable to oppress them. Homosexuality is a non-identity that people create that allows them to bring their sexual behavior from behind closed doors and into the public forum -- while at the same time insisting that what they do behind closed doors is nobody else's business.
Big difference.
Abiskan Moon-Angel 09-06-06, - 07:08 PM I still don’t get it.
The world is seemingly on a one way trip to oblivion and we just not getting it. G.W. Bush is the leader of the free world and his three biggest advisors are Cheney, Rove and Rumsfeld.
I really believe I could stop right there.
That alone is scary enough for me but no it gets worse. The Islamic Fundementalist terrorist campaign is expanding in scope (of violence, range and magnitude). The United States has created a Pandora’s Box in Iraq and has already opened it. It can only go uphill from here? WRONG…. It can and is seemingly headed for a disaster of such magnitude I cant even imagine.
And Iraq aint nothing compared to what could/might/likely will happen in North Korea.
And North Korea aint nothing compared to what could/might/likely will happen in Iran.
And……”might happen” is happening right now in Israel and Lebannon and threatening now more than ever to blow up and realize a world war like most of us have never experienced in our lifetimes.
…..and notice the silence on the plight of black people worldwide…. The world not particulary interested in the fact that genocide is taking place right now on an escalated scale in Sudan. (there is also war in Somalia and conflict and Uganda).
What about at home. When I was home for Junkanoo they closed bay street so we all had to cut thru the maze of streets (for the chronically lost like myself) in order to get from PI back to Cable Beach. I knew poverty existed but it was so easy to not see when you stick to the main roads. But on this detour the depth of poverty and misery just steps from Bay Street was profound. I was a little shocked and my family is from there.
The continued victims of Katrina. The corruption of the governments and the false promises and dire consequences of the war on drugs.
Black men in jail not at home, not in school, not at work and not able to vote.
HIV and Aids.
Poor people with no health insurance.
Babies with no food.
I could go on all day.
But what does this have to do with this thread? Homophobia? Because this is what the powers that be want you to spend your time and dollars with. They’d rather pander to your more base prejudices than to appease your intellect. Its no mistake that this issue is brought up in the media and beat like a dead horse (gay shoes and lesbian gangs and other stupidness). It has the ability to mislead people and have them worked up about stuff that simply should not matter to them …and its intended to divide communities and people. Especially black people.
“Karl Rove and the right-wing decision makers in the White House are not content to [Gays]. They hope to exploit us, and so they have co-opted conservative black clergy in an unholy alliance to drive a wedge between two progressive constituencies instead of building their own base within these communities. And yet many of our [black] pastors are all-too-willing conspirators in this transparent Republicna ploy to siphon off black votes”.
“If the KKK opposes gay marriage, I would ride with them,” Rev. Gregory Daniels, a Chicago Black minister, said from the pulpit in February."
So what im wondering is?
When yall were down on Rawson Square worrying about what two moral, law abiding adults do in their personal lives to which has no effect on you. When the money basket went out …. Did the pastor/speaker mention any of these other things you should be worrying about?
Did he pass around the basket for Darfur?
:bahamas:
my sentiments exactly! the world is F%&#^ed up...and I became even more aware of that last night, as I flipped through all the news stations/political debates - they were all talking about the dead aussie...erm hello? John Howard et als. are actually considering a STATE FUNERAL??? HEllo? have we nothing more important to think about people????
Ting-um 09-06-06, - 07:10 PM If they kept it their business nobody would talk about it.
trubahamian 09-06-06, - 07:16 PM I don't usually do this, but.....anyone see the interview with Toni - I mean Vicki in the Guardian? Crap!
Yikes!..........U mean dis person is a 2 speed transmission for real?lol

Not an answer. If it were to happen. HOW WOULD YOUR NORMAL LIFE BE AFFECTED? or maybe you dont have an answer? or maybe the answer is... it wouldnt change at all......Because these arguments are all hot air and puffery to justify your personal prejudices. I already knew this.

So you just voided my response based on nothing more than your say so??
First of all, you asked me to make an assumption -- that's like asking me what I would do if I got fired tomorrow. I have no clue. But I know it wouldn't be a good thing. I can assume that the majority -- which includes myself would rush to the ballot box and vote in the most militant conservative available. Just as my life wouldn't be affected if they took prayer out of school. At least not in the short run -- but in the long run I understand the value of prayer in school. I understand the value of marriage to a demoralized society. So in response to further demoralization, your actions would serve to militarize me even further. And cease trying to discuss our differences.
