After strolling through the strawmarket, what five years later after the FNM and PLP promised to rebuild their market, I realised that the proud hard working women of the market have something in common with Hurricane Katrina victims. They both are led by lazy, retarded, government officials all of whom can sit back and watch them suffocate under decrepit rat infested ( the rat must have been a 16 inches long) hazardous conditions. At least the US's excuse is plain old racism, how can the actions of the Bahamas government be explained? My pet peeve is classism and this country stinks of it.

We really need new leadership FNM PLP, nobody gives a dam about the common man. These people don't love themselves how can they love us.

Maybe not, maybe we need vendors who who have the zeal to want to improve their own conditions. When you look at some of the conditions such as the garbage, who is responsible for that, no one else but them. Let's face it some Bahamians are nasty and could care less about their surroundings. I think it's time they get themselves together and form some kind of Management Union who is willing to work (with) and not (wait) on the Government hand and feet. Get the private sector involved. Take a look at the market in Freeport, it may not be a large as the one in Nassau, but they do not appear to be in the same country. As long as the Government builds that market and continue to charge those vendors pennies for rent, it will never be properly maintained. Run the market as the business that it is, as a matter of fact the Government needs to remove it's hand from the day to day running of that market and privatise it. Yes, let someone else run it, someone who will collect the rent and ensure that it is maintained properly. The worse landlord in the Bahamas is the Bahamas Government. Just look at the Government buildings, need I say more.

Americans subsidize it's farmers and manufacturers, China manages it's currency to keep imports higher than exports- large mega countries supporting their own....it's more than because they have to but their is a will to....but as far as you are concerned a third world country like the bahamas should stand against the trends of modern economies and let their own home industries suffer...no wonder the government can ignore promises they keep...i said it before I'll say it again...the government is an exact replication of it's people unless your thinking represents the minority.

F.Y.I I do not, never did and by the looks of things so far, never will, classify the Bahamas as a third world country. It would be rather foolish to do so if you really look at the economy and development in this country compared to countries that are really classified as third world. I said it before and I will say it again, stop waiting on the government hand and feet, put some heat on them.

I agree the Government should be held to it's promises, yes, they should rebuild the straw market, Subsidizing the market is fine after all the market has become a permanent feature of our tourism product in Nassau, by all means subsidize them, but, 100% management by Government will lead them back to the same conditions that they were in before. The Government still is and will always be a lousy landlord. The management of the market needs to be removed from the hands of the Government to ensure proper and continuous upkeep.

Like I said before take a look at the market in Freeport, rent is paid, the place is maintained, looking at the place one can hardly call it a market place. Nassau should be the same, it is not a matter of letting the home industry suffer, it is a matter of creating a better environment that is more presentable as a tourism product. If the Government can't present them with a clean airport upon arrival, at least let the visit to the world renowned straw market be more enjoyable.

This summer I worked in the Straw Market in Freeport with the most beautiful and resillient women I have ever had the honor of working with. This was the most difficult but rewarding work I have ever done. Okay I am spoiled, but I know that I could never work in the Straw Market for the rest of my life. These women work so hard and have to deal with so much from performing the role of the happy native, to selling our culture to tourists who come to the island with preconcieved notions of how the islanders should act. On a daily basis I had to smile and perform so that I could make money, because my sisters survival depended on it. It is sad to hear that these women in Nassau are being forced to live and work under these conditions. Our government should realize that the straw martket and the women who work in the straw markets are just as important as our beaches and the hotels, and should be treated as such.
