View Full Version : Coroners Court Change..
nationbuilder 09-20-06, - 08:46 PM This is interesting indeed. The Chief Justice of the Courts has indicated that the Bahamas will go back to the system of Coroners' Court it had over 13 years ago..
I see the FNM wasted no time in responding to this...the last parts of the statement is what really cracked me up, (that is after I found out today from other sources what the judicial system has decided to do)

bahamiangoddess 09-20-06, - 09:28 PM I knew that Mrs Virgil's press conference would cause a stir, that was the first time I ever saw a Magistrate on t.v talking prematurely about an upcoming case or (supposedly case). Now to hear that there will be no inquest into Smith's death must be a real embarrassment for the Government.
I am sure that the International Press will have us for lunch, however if getting rid of the Coroner's Court is the government's way of punishing Mrs Virgil, I would say the punishment does not fit the crime. Why would the P.L.P Government want to take so many steps backwards by abolishing the Coroner's court. Bereaved families should not have to wait for forever to find out the circumstances surrounding the death of a loved one deemed suspicious or sudden.
We all know the backlog that exists in our judicial system and now to add the Coroner's court to that backlog is laughable but serious. I saw the funeral directors on t.v agitating for it's return, If there is anyone who knows about the frustration regarding getting proper documentation for a deceased for burial is the funeral directors.
I say deal with Mrs Virgil action's separately and continue to operate the Coroners Court. Let the Court be!!!!!
If this is so, now is not the time to change things with a high profile case on the table. The World press will call that suspicious. Sometimes I think we have a death wish here! We want to "kill" ourselves with the world watching.
nationbuilder 09-21-06, - 01:12 AM lol lol lol..enter the Shane Gibson part of the saga...[from the Bahama Journal]
"The FNM in its statement also said it is dismayed that this sudden change in judicial policy was precipitated by the death of Daniel Smith.
Smith was the son of Anna Nicole Smith, the former Playboy playmate and reality TV star. He died in Doctors Hospital last week while visiting his mother who had just given birth to a baby girl.
The FNM statement added, "The Free National Movement is also disturbed over the special treatment being dished out to Ms. Anna Nicole Smith by a government which hastily gave her permanent residency; and by a government whose Minister of Labour and Immigration, the Hon. Shane Gibson, has been known to personally visit Ms. Anna Nicole Smith at a dwelling home and, during her recent moment of deep personal loss and distress, at her hospital bed."
Asked last night whether he visited Ms. Smith, Minister Gibson said, "I’ve met with lots of high profile individuals from before I was a member of the government and so meeting high profile individuals is nothing new to me."
He refused to say whether he had visited Ms. Smith in hospital. "Is that important?" he asked. "What would be the significance of that?"
He said however that he does know Ms. Smith personally.
Minister Gibson was also asked whether Ms. Smith got her permanent residency quickly.
"She got treatment that we tried to give to every economic permanent resident applicant," he said, but refused to confirm how long it took Ms. Smith to get her permanent residency. He said he would have to get the specific time and did not know that last night."

Alien 09-21-06, - 09:45 AM But, the truth is when things like this happen, things ARE supposed to change.
If the PLP did nothing "like it allways did" then they would be more than happy to say that they are screw ups.

Tafadhali 09-21-06, - 10:14 AM ...how much did anna pay
I can only hope that, when the time comes, my american husband will get moved to the front of the line...because his Bahamian wife wants to get his permanent residency papers worked out...people we should be ashamed...Bahamian women are discriminated against in our constitution for this very same thing were just giving away to this person and this inept lackey unprofessional and unpolished immigration minister broadcast so freely and non-chalantly what he's done and he doesnt understand the broader message his ignorance sends. This is worse than a bananan republic...at least there people know what to say and how to say it...I like anna...but she is far from better than me in my own damn country.
I hope homey is enjoyign the view of his lakefront home...because that too will be taken when the trc comes.

Are you suggesting that the government dictates to the judicial system?
