Fr. Bartholomew Sayles, a Benedictine Monk who served in The Bahamas from 1957 to 1970 died in Minnesota on Sunday 17th September at the St. Johns Abbey. He was 88 years old at the time of his death. He was the music teacher at St. Augustine’s College the Benedictine monastery that founded and ran the high school in Nassau. The monastery closed down in The Bahamas last year.
Fr. Bartholomew was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on 24th April 1918. He graduated from Xavier University in Louisiana in 1939 magna *** laude with a degree in music. He took his priestly vocation following university. While in The Bahamas he served as part time Chaplain at the Prison and was a member of the Renaissance Singers. He educated a generation of students in the art of music, singing and piano playing. One such student was Luther Smith, special assistant to Prime Minister Perry Christie who wrote this tribute. Fr. Bartholomew was buried on Wednesday 20th September at St. John’s Abbey.

Sad...all the old monks dying out...

I believe he was there when my dad went to SAC. There were some yearbooks at home, and I believe I saw his picture. Ah! and he directed the Chorus! He probably directed my dad.

Yes all the monks are dying out..and no one to replace them. You would have to be pretty determined and grounded to say you want to be one.

He was one of the greatest - recall many passed through SAC and many have made such a big contribution to te lives of some many of us Bahamians - I am pleased to be one that had the oportunity to be counted among the fortunate.

I did not know him, but any man of the cloth deserves the highest praise if he truly lived the life of a decent moral respectable man.
