View Full Version : Gender Bias in the Bahamas is it fact or fiction?
natureboy2136 10-01-06, - 01:24 PM The minister of social services miss Melanie Griffen about three weeks ago said that gender bias in the Bahamas is a reality. her comments came about as a result of some statistics that was taken in her ministry as it relates to the yearly earnings of Bahamian males in comparrison with Bahamian females. she stated that Bahamian males make much more money per year than Bahamian females. she said in some cases even twice as much per year than Bahamian females. my question is how could this be when our Bahamian females hold's top & strategic positions in any major company in our country. you have more females in our country today working as bank managers, lawyers, educators, permanent secutaries, fass food resturant managers, even in our local hotels Bahamian woman have more managerial positions than Bahamian men. I'm just curious about the minister findings.

I dont care what the statistics say! that is absolute NONSENSE. The Banking sector is one of the highest paid in the country and it it dominated by women! I myself have serious difficulty in finding a woman who does not make more than me. Dr Munroe said when he met his wife she was making more than him. Many self employed women are beauticians & nail tech. These are very lucrative industries.
the statistics I do not believe distinguished between self employed men & women and men and women who work for a company.
I know when you compare women & men who work for companies. Women by far make more. It is only in the self employed industry where men may have the edge E.G. auto services bodywork etc.

That is not correct. It is a fact that gender parity in the Bahamas does not exist. Are you trying to say the government, through its department of statistics, as well as the Chamber of Commerce and other private groups through their labour force analyses, are lying?
Wake up man. Gender parity in pay doesnt exist even in first world countries like the U.S.

First of all I really do not believe that this research was done by the department of statistic. If you understand what the minister is saying. She is saying that gender parity does exist!!!! And it heavily favours Men! I am simply saying that I do not believe that. Not for one second! I believe that only self employed men make more than women who work for companies. Self employed women however can equal self employed men in terms of income.

How could PARITY favor any one side dude, when PARITY means EQUALITY???:gi:
The annual labour force survey is conducted by the Department of Statistics, who works along with the Ministry of Labour. Dude, you need to be more aware of how your country runs!

Sorry My Error - I meant to say that parity does not exist but I do not believe the Ministers claim that this country is partial towards men. My goodness I couldn't t even get a job in an offshore bank when many female associates with similar qualifications got in!
look in the newspaper, the classified ads are overrun with jobs looking for females only. If anything it is the other way around ... If I wanted to (as did a few years ago with vast experience in NY Restaurants) I could not get a job as a waiter in many well known local restaurants, as they only hire females.

What that have to do with pay parity though Rory? The pay parity issue is about women getting paid the same as a man does for the same position with the same credentials.

Yeah everytime you pick up the paper that is what you see now. Just think now, if this was the other way around women would call that rampant gender discrimination. We want men off the streets but even some of the lowliest little eateries wont hire them.

There is some dispute to the parity augment in the US. Studies on the opposite side of the augments have found that when you factor in the time off women have for babies etc. the pay disparity is non-existent. I suspect that the same would apply in the Bahamas. Also isn’t the statistics department for the most part ran by women like the majority of government services, don’t you think that might bias the info.

No I dont, and thanks for calling the females in the department of statistics a bunch of unprofessionals. I'm quite certain you would not have made that assertion if all the statiticians were male.
And since bias exists in many different forms, I guess you dont trust any info at all that the government puts out through that department?
Also, your example about time women have for babies only applies to hourly paid jobs, not set salary paid posts as are referred to often in such discussions.
Seagod 10-02-06, - 10:40 AM I am suprised, she makes it sound drastic. I wonder what the improvements have been in the last 25 five years for example. Did they statistics give a comparison?
