Ya know what sometimes I believe some of our people rather wallow in poverty and wait on Government to bring the proverbial "ham" n "turkey" to them during election time. Alot of our natives aren't motivated and lack alot of self esteem and drive. I ain't saying they all do but I mean even in abject poverty you would at least want your children to be as presentable as possible.

Self esteem is definetely a major factor as you indicated..because with self esteem you will get up and try to make things happen whether the govt helps you or not.

I was at home when I heard a knock at my door. When I went to the door a young girl no more than 10/12 I guess, was there asking me if I ...

Reminds me of one time I was stepping out my grammy front door and a girl around 14/15 came climbing over her back wall. She was covered in dirt and had all kind of bush and prickle stuck in her hair.

She said she was runnin away from her old man cuz she let her boyfriend come over to the house without askin. She asked me to call the police and before I could say anthing she pushed me aside, ran inside my grammys house and crawled under the table in the kitchen!

Lesson Learned:
Teach your children to obey you early so that later on in life they don't do something that makes you so mad you beat their boyfriend half to death and scare your daughter into running through the bush for hours so you don't find her and she winds up passing out from dehydration under some strange peoples kitchen table.

Lets not forget about the parents who look for a free babysitter at the local government schools. The parents send their children to school, and take little or no interest in their child's education. And to top that off they dont even show up for the child's report card! The children get awayt with whatever they want because mommy to busy out in the club or fish fry and daddy either dont care less or aint nowhere to be found.

The part that doesn't sit well with me is, when the parent(s) can afford to keep thier kids looking better and they don't.
I always see a certain bank manager with his kids when he's off from work. He's always neat and groomed, but his kids. You would never think thier his. I know I thought they weren't, until I heard them call him daddy. And this is just one of many I've witnessed.

I just saw something today that really angered me.
I was at home when I heard a knock at my door. When I went to the door a young girl no more than 10/12 I guess, was there asking me if I wanted to sponsor her school.
I looked around to see if anyone was with her..and she was alone.
Now what angered me was this - how are you gonna let your child go out alone knocking on the doors of strangers asking them for money?
Whats to stop someone from pulling that child into their home and raping her or worse?
I just dont get why some Bahamian parents are so slack and irresponsible with their children!!

I agree that some parents are just too laissez-faire when it comes to their children. But not meaning to change the topic, when are we going to do away with this "sponsoring" racket? The organisations don't get half of the sponsored money and it only perpetuates a "begging" or "something for nothing" mentality. This in itself is damaging to personal as well as national development.

The personal sponsor sheets bother me. The ones where they come begging for $$ to pay for their group trip to Disney, etc..:uh:

THIS IS JUST A DISGRACE IN THE BAHAMAS. many fathers and mothers just simply don't care.once that child can walk and talk that all it looks like they wanted and they are off.come people get real .our children are our future and they need to be look after.

Chile we live in a country where the parents does make the sponsor sheets and send the children out. Half of the time the children can't even tell u what the sponsor is for!!!!

So u know they really don't care if something happens to these precious angels... It make me sick to my stomach, but what do we do!!! Do we make these slack parents accountable? Then again that won't do any good cause the murders does get out on bail to kill again!!! (suck teeth):(

Now that most of the problems and bad situation were addressed, what can we normal citizens do to right some of the wrong that is happening to these children.

Can we look around the parent and help the hungry child? That is what I am doing, I am helping a little girl who mother died and the father is disgusting and would perfer me to put money in his hand. So I take the stuff to the school and the guardian counsellor is wonderful. I am sure that this child gets one meal a day, Lunch, snack and juice. I got her on the weekend fix her hair and wash and press her uniform. I promised her that I wont stop helping her. I feel so blessed to do this!

My heart hurts to see this happening in this country...:dgi:

One morning at about 8:45 a.m I passed a small child (girl) in uniform no more than about 5-6 yrs in the rain walking along the Mall Drive (main highway) in Freeport.

I stopped because my nephew was about that same age, before I could ask her anything she jumped in the car and closed the door. I look at the uniform and headed toward Hugh Campbell Primary School. I asked her where was her mom, she said home sleeping.

I ask her why was she walking because her school was nowhere near where I picked her up. She said she was going to catch the public bus. She said she was six years old and had no other siblings.

When I pulled up to Hugh Campbell School, I realized that it was the wrong school, she did not even realize where we were. I turned around and took her to Freeport Primary, she got out and helped herself to a bag of chips on the seats.

I watched the child enter the gates in disbelief, it appeared that she never had the stranger talk. There are also children who had the talk and will still go with strangers. If you don't believe me talk to parents who will swear their child knows better, put the child to the test and see what happens.

Another question that comes to mind is why are there so many school age kids on the streets during school time. What happened to the truant officers?
