forwardupwardonwardtogeth 10-09-06, - 03:11 PM The Baker's Bay employees, about 100 of them, held a demonstration in the streets of Marsh Harbour today. We are determined to get back to work and not let a tiny group of people, mostly Americans living on Guana Cay, to shape our future, the future of our families. We want to get back to work and we believe in this project. Listen to the Bahamians, not Save Guana Cay Reef.

I was wondering what was taking them so long to make their voices heard, as its hard to get a word in edgewise behind stupid Fred Smith and his crusade that has nothing at all to do with saving the environment...

it amazes me how people will destroy the environment for 50cents and to kiss and clean foreign arse but not recognize the destruction being done in our beautiful country for what it is...
The save guana cay folks on guana who live there have a connection to our land and deserve respect in their fight to keep it ..its our heritage...go find your own way stop depending on someone to give you a job...how much were you paid to protest?

Not a bad idea. But hey. I'm not saying that there arent environmental issues to consider as with any project..but there are Bahamians employed at that project whose LIVES are being affected NOW - and no one seems to care about them.
Moreover, alot of what Fred those are harping about is either overblown or in some cases untrue. You dont know Fred. He is a very good lawyer but he is also a good PR artist. He knows that if you keep saying the same thing over and over again it becomes true to people - even if it isnt.

you talk about NOW...but what about THEN...what about our future...What about those Bahamians who have been on guana for generations...what about them...its their lives and their way of living who will change now forever and a day because of this development not the 100 folks in Marsh Harbour who leave the island after night fall...what about them? Do you think its fair for the govt to just say a development is coming here without consulting with them (the guana cay generations) and taking into account the environment and what that means? Thing is this is happening all over the carribbean...in jamaica with their dead coral discovery bay or barbados with Graeme Hall.
I dont know him (fred and he probably wont ever meet me) but I can discern factual information from a PR stunt...we dont take our environment or land issues serious...that should be pause for alarm enough...why would you say it overblown...why would you say its untruthful...the research has been done the world over...this is a serious matter!
like I said this is greater than ol fred...or even the save guana foundation...this goes beyond any of their hollering and treehugging stance...just because you dont like the sound of their voice or the person it doesnt mean what their saying or their activism is real and sincere...
whether you realise it or not...we as human beings and especially Bahamians with all this global warming need to understand our connection to our land and our roles as stewards in the protection of it. bet that up!

These aren't the people that are complaining. The complaints for the most part comes from Winter residents. I feel that their views must be considered as they do have a stake in this, but should their views be given more consideration than a Bahamian who cannot find work. I contend that it is more important for a Bahamian to have gainful employment than for a Winter resident to have a quiet idyllic hideaway for 2 months each year.

A Bahamian having more of a say in our own country is something that should go without saying...but at the sametime we must have balance...we must understand our connection to our land and sea and the environmental stewardship that comes with it...and where was this contention and reasoning when the administration be it PLP or FNM decided to give this development a go without consulting with the people...the same thing is happening in Mayaguana you know...where was the Bahamian first mentality then?
while I applaud the winter residents for attaching their resources to help fight this cause....but make no mistake at any given time of the day...fuk the snowbirds. and you know I seriously mean that.
what about the Bahamians who've been on guana for generations...what about how they feel...why couldnt baker's bay be on marsh harbour seeing that the people want it there so bad...why couldnt they dig up the mud or pidgeon pea and make their development there...why?
this goes to a deeper concern...we live in the here and now apt times and dont think about saving for the future and tomorrow and what that means...flashforward 50 years...what then...when the environment has been destroyed and 100 workers have made their 50 cent depending on the govt to provide them with a job as opposed to finding their own way...what then? people think with foresight as opposed to the dreadful hindsight that will ensue if we dont take heed and we all know that hindsight is a b1tch!
